Reading: We are continuing to explore nonfiction (informational) texts during Daily 5. They are getting really good at using text features such as bold words, glossaries, tables of contents, indexes, captions, and photos to gather information about a topic. The subjects that we have been learning about include animal and plant life cycles and plant needs, animal characteristics and plant parts, and weather/seasons topics.
Writing: We are writing opinion papers, which must always include a topic sentence. This is where they state their opinion such as : I really enjoy going to recess, and playing on the swings is the most fun! They are asked to give reasons (three) to support their opinion and then restate their opinion once more at the end (closing sentence).
Math: We are learning about place value. This is tricky for many students. They must know that the value of a number changes depending on where it appears in a number. For instance, in the number 783, the value of the 3 is three because it is in the ones place. The value of the 8 is actually 80 because it is in the tens place and the 7 is worth 700 because it is in the hundreds place. We are learning to mentally add and subtract 10 to a number by increasing or decreasing the number in the tens place by one.
Science: We are exploring the life cycles of many living things. We learned that all living things go through changes and stages and this is called a life cycle. We are also comparing animal characteristics among parents and their babies by observing how many legs they have, body coverings, beak shapes, etc.
Social Studies: We are revisiting studying the past and present by comparing and contrasting schools, family life, and transportation then and now.
Please remember to send in a snack (or two) with your child as we no longer receive a snack from the cafeteria. I usually have cereal to share for those who forget their snack, but that goes very quickly with 26 students. If you are able to send in a healthy snack such as Cheerios, we would greatly appreciate it.
Let’s a have a great week!
