Week May 30-June 2

Hello Families! I hope you enjoyed this long weekend. We had some showers and some sun, so hopefully you were able to get outside for a bit. Here are our plans for the week:

Wednesday: We will have our first grade picnic. Students can bring outdoor playground equipment from home. They may also bring a blanket to sit on. We will have popsicles as well. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately, as we will be outside for over an hour.

Reading: We will continue to read fictional stories and practice retelling the important events in order. We sometimes use a BMME chart to do this, but we also summarize stories orally. Additionally, we will be studying the characters and describing their behaviors and traits. Students should be able to identify the story elements such as main characters, setting, and main events.

Writing: We are going to write personal narratives. They must have a topic sentence, three interesting events in order, and a closing sentence.

Math: Students will continue to learn different strategies to add and subtract within 20 (make a ten, drawings, and decomposing numbers).

Social Studies: We will continue to look at life in the past and present including communication, schools, jobs, toys, and family life. We will also learn about important events such as Presidents’ Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Independence Day.

Science: Students continue to study plant and animal needs, characteristics and passed on traits, and life cycles.

Let’s have a great week!

We are also learning to tell the difference between statements and questions:click here

Write about a birthday that you had. Remember to include a topic sentence, at least three events from that birthday and a closing sentence. Here is an example:

My favorite birthday was when I turned six. First, my parents decorated my bedroom with balloons and streamers. Next, we went to IHOP for a special breakfast. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes…Yum! After that, my friends came over for a party in my backyard. We had a water balloon fight. Finally, everyone went home and we watched a movie and ate popcorn. All my birthdays are special, but that one was my favorite!

Happy Sunday, Families!
I hope you are staying dry this weekend. Here are our plans for the week. Please remember that we do not have school on Friday. Our field day is on Thursday morning, so make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and wears gym clothes (and shoes).

Reading: The children are excited to revisit fiction stories this week. We are working on identifying the story elements (Setting, Problem/solution, Characters) and also story retelling. They must be able to summarize the story (orally and written) using transition words such as First, Next, After that, and Finally. This was challenging for some of them when I tested their end of the year reading level. It is so important that they can ask and answer questions about a story because this shows that they truly comprehend what they are reading. You can practice doing this with your child by asking Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How questions after you read stories together at home.

Writing: We are continuing with our opinion writing this week and also completing our end of the year informational writing. We are talking/writing about ways to conserve (save) water. Many students continue to do a wonderful job in their writing journals at home, yet some children are not writing about the assigned topic at all :-(. I promise that DAILY practice with writing will help your child grow as a reader and writer.

Math: We will take our Unit 9 math test this week. This unit includes counting tens and ones, adding two digit numbers, breaking apart numbers, writing numbers in expanded form, dividing shapes into two and four equal parts, and number grid puzzles.

Science: We are learning about animal and plant life cycles. Additionally, we are learning that animals and humans pass traits or characteristics such as hair, eye color, skin color, height, etc. from the parent to their young.

Social studies: We are learning about communication, transportation, school, and family life in the past and present. We are comparing and contrasting life in the past and present. Additionally, we are learning about reasons for celebrating holidays such as Independence Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Have a great Sunday!
