JAN. 31

Tonight’s homework is a review of fact family sentences. This gave some of my students a bit of a challenge on NWEA. They should be able to see three numbers in the same fact family (example, 11, 3, and 8) and create four sentences (two addition and two subtraction) with just these three numbers.

Writing Topic: They were each given a nonfiction book. They should read the pictures, subheadings, bold words, etc. to learn facts about the topic. They then record the main topic in their notebooks. The Main Topic is what the book is mostly about.
Have a great evening!

Jan. 30- Feb 3

Hello Families!
I hope you are all staying warm on this snowy Sunday 🙂
We have completed our NWEA testing for winter. All students did great and I know that we will all continue to work hard so that we meet our NWEA goals in the spring. If you have any questions about what you can do at home to help your child, I am always available. It is definitely important that your child reads from his/her book bag each night. They must also complete the activity in their math bag and do the writing assignment for that evening. All assignments are short and reinforce what we are learning about in class. Here are our plans for the week:

Spelling

Words

1. clap

2. clock

3. close

4. click

5. clam

6. clown

7. any

8. put

9. take

10. every

Reading: We are looking at and reading nonfiction (informational) books. These are typically more challenging for children because of the content and higher vocabulary. We are learning to look at the text features such as the photos, captions, glossaries, bold words, indexes and tables of contents. These features will help them read and understand the information about the topic. This week we will learn how to identify the main topic of a nonfiction book and answer questions about the book using key details.

Writing: We are publishing our opinion writing about a pet that we wish to have. Please look in the hallway later this week to see their published opinion writing. We will then begin our “How to” informational writing where they will write the steps necessary to complete a task or activity.

Math: We continue to learn about place value. We are learning that a two digit number has an amount of tens and ones. We are drawing that number using base ten blocks and cubes. We are also learning that a number has a different value depending on where it is in the number. For instance, in the number 67, the 6 actually has a value of 60 and the 7 has a value of 7. We will extend this learning with three digit numbers.

Science: This week we are learning that the sun is a star. It provides the earth with warmth, energy, and light. Students will be able to identify the three types of living things (humans, plants, and animals) that rely on the sun. Additionally, they will illustrate what might happen or what the world would look like without the sun.

Social Studies: We are continuing our unit on economics. This week, we’ll review goods and services, providing examples of each. Goods are items that people buy and services are things that people do for us.

Have a relaxing Sunday!

Homework Jan. 25

Hi Families!

Tonight’s homework is a math worksheet with a story problem and some addition problems.

Tonight’s writing topic_ they are to read the book that I gave them in class and write the important events from the beginning, middle and end of the story. If they forgot their book, they may use any book that they have in their book bag or at home.

Tomorrow morning is our NWEA reading test. Make sure your child attends school and has a great breakfast. Go to sleep early, first graders! We can do this!! I am proud of ALL of them!

Homework Jan. 24

Hi Families!
Tonight’s homework asks students to write three digit numbers in expanded notation. Here is an example:
567= 500 +60+7

304= 300+4

Tonight’s writing topic is: Write a list of Producers:

A producer is someone or something who makes goods. Here are some examples:

1. Apple Tree
2. Baker
3. Chef

NWEA: We will take the NWEA reading test on Thursday morning. It is so important that you talk with your child about taking his/her time and trying his/her best on every single question. I am impressed with all of them and I know they will do great! Please make sure he/she has a full breakfast and plenty of rest the night before. Attendance is very important on Thursday, so please make sure your child comes to school. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Homework Jan. 23

Hello Families,
Tonight’s homework was a math worksheet where they had to identify tens and ones in a two digit number.

Math Bags- Each child has a math activity in his/her math bag. Please complete the activity with your child. A different activity is coming soon, but please review this activity until he/she receives another activity.

Writing Notebook Topic: Many students had trouble copying the topic from the board today because we were rushed at the end of the day. The topic is: Write about your weekend. They are to do this in a BMME chart, which is simply four boxes on their paper. They are to write four events in order from their weekends. A sample of mine is below. It is out of order because they I took this photo before they helped me assemble it in the correct order 😉 They may illustrate their events.

Have a great evening!

Parent Meeting Tomorrow

There is a parent meeting at 2:00 in the cafeteria. Your attendance is strongly encouraged. I hope you are able to be there:-)

Below is a letter I will be sending home tomorrow about writing notebooks. Thanks!

Week of Jan. 23

Hello Families! I hope you are all enjoying your weekend. Please practice reading with your child, as we will take our Reading NWEA test this week (Thursday morning). Some things you can do to review include:
1. Locating nouns in their books (people, places and things)
2. Identify the story elements (characters, setting, beginning, middle, end)
3. Identify verbs (action words)
4. Define synonyms (words with the same meaning)
5. Define antonyms (words with opposite meaning)
6. Identify words that need capital letters (beginning of the sentence and proper nouns)
7. Days of the week
8. Title, author, illustrator, and dedication (who was the book written for?)
9. Main Idea- what is the story mostly about?
10. contractions (can’t won’t don’t)
11. Use of commas (after a date, to list many items)
12. Where to start reading on a page and which way to go.
13. Rhyming words

That should keep you busy 🙂 We have been studying these all year, so I know we will do great, but many parents have asked what they can do to help. Many of us met our math nwea goal, and I expect us to do the same for reading. Once I have access to the Math scores and results, I will look closely at areas of need. You will begin to see activities in their reading bags. Some of them will be challenging and that will mean that your child is ready to take his/her learning to another level. Please take these activities seriously, as they will help your child grow and advance in Math.

Here is what our week looks like:
Spelling

Words

1. blue

2. black

3. blank

4. blow

5. glow

6. glad

7. ask

8. over

9. just

10. from

Reading: We continue to compare and contrast stories, identify the characters, setting, and main events in a story, and retell stories using the words : First, next, after that, and Finally.

Writing: We are working on opinion writing this week. It is important that students are able to state their opinion in their first sentence (topic sentence) and give three reasons to support their opinion. We use transition phrases such as “One reason is…” “Another reason is ….” “Finally, …” They must end their piece by stating their opinion one more time with a sense of closure.

Math: We are continue to learn how to represent numbers with tens and ones. Our next step is to learn how to read, write ,and identify three digit numbers such as 578. They are learning how to record these numbers in expanded form. For example, 578= 500+70+8. We are learning to compare numbers and determine which is greater than, less than, or equal to.

Science: This week, we are learning to record and interpret observations about the weather on a graph or chart. There were many questions about reading and interpreting graphs on NWEA. You can go to Khan academy through the dearbornschools.org clever link and type “reading graphs” in the search box. Actually, you can type any subject you wish and they can watch a short video that reinforces the material we learn in class. I highly recommend you doing this. If you need assistance, I am more than willing to help you.

Social Studies: We continue to learn about our economy (goods, services, consumers, producers, needs, and wants).

I forgot to post these pictures before our Winter Break. They had a great time making their measurement trees!

Movie Night, Homework, and NWEA

Tomorrow is Movie Night at 4:30. Admission is free! Students must be with an adult. We are showing Zootopia 😉

Homework : We briefly learned about fractions today. A fraction is simply an equal part of a whole. We talked about how the number on the bottom (denominator) is the total number of EQUAL parts and the number on the top (numerator) is the number of equal parts that are shaded.

NWEA: We will take our NWEA math test tomorrow morning. We have been preparing for months, so I am expecting it to go very well. Please remind your child that this test is important and they are all expected to meet their Winter goal. It is important that they sleep well tonight, eat a healthy breakfast, and remember to read and answer each question carefully. I am confident that they will do great!!

Have a great night!
