Hello Families! I hope you are all enjoying your weekend. Please practice reading with your child, as we will take our Reading NWEA test this week (Thursday morning). Some things you can do to review include:
1. Locating nouns in their books (people, places and things)
2. Identify the story elements (characters, setting, beginning, middle, end)
3. Identify verbs (action words)
4. Define synonyms (words with the same meaning)
5. Define antonyms (words with opposite meaning)
6. Identify words that need capital letters (beginning of the sentence and proper nouns)
7. Days of the week
8. Title, author, illustrator, and dedication (who was the book written for?)
9. Main Idea- what is the story mostly about?
10. contractions (can’t won’t don’t)
11. Use of commas (after a date, to list many items)
12. Where to start reading on a page and which way to go.
13. Rhyming words
That should keep you busy 🙂 We have been studying these all year, so I know we will do great, but many parents have asked what they can do to help. Many of us met our math nwea goal, and I expect us to do the same for reading. Once I have access to the Math scores and results, I will look closely at areas of need. You will begin to see activities in their reading bags. Some of them will be challenging and that will mean that your child is ready to take his/her learning to another level. Please take these activities seriously, as they will help your child grow and advance in Math.
Here is what our week looks like:

Reading: We continue to compare and contrast stories, identify the characters, setting, and main events in a story, and retell stories using the words : First, next, after that, and Finally.
Writing: We are working on opinion writing this week. It is important that students are able to state their opinion in their first sentence (topic sentence) and give three reasons to support their opinion. We use transition phrases such as “One reason is…” “Another reason is ….” “Finally, …” They must end their piece by stating their opinion one more time with a sense of closure.
Math: We are continue to learn how to represent numbers with tens and ones. Our next step is to learn how to read, write ,and identify three digit numbers such as 578. They are learning how to record these numbers in expanded form. For example, 578= 500+70+8. We are learning to compare numbers and determine which is greater than, less than, or equal to.
Science: This week, we are learning to record and interpret observations about the weather on a graph or chart. There were many questions about reading and interpreting graphs on NWEA. You can go to Khan academy through the dearbornschools.org clever link and type “reading graphs” in the search box. Actually, you can type any subject you wish and they can watch a short video that reinforces the material we learn in class. I highly recommend you doing this. If you need assistance, I am more than willing to help you.
Social Studies: We continue to learn about our economy (goods, services, consumers, producers, needs, and wants).
I forgot to post these pictures before our Winter Break. They had a great time making their measurement trees!
