February

I cannot believe it is February!! This year is going by so fast and it’s so awesome watching your children learn and grow. Here are some things that we will be learning about in the next few weeks:

Reading: Continue to read with your child each evening. They should be using the pictures and stretching the words when they are stuck.

Writing: We will be writing “How-To” informational pieces such as “How to Make a Pizza,” “How to play Tag,” etc.

Social Studies: We will be learning how to read and make simple maps. We will learn that places with addresses have “absolute locations.” Additionally, we will learn the difference between human (buildings, playgrounds, racetracks, houses) and physical (trees, oceans, hills, desserts) characteristics.

Science: We are continuing to learn about the importance of the sun, reasons for seasons, and weather.

Math: Please continue to practice telling time (now to the quarter hour, and minute (as a challenge) and counting money.

Week of Jan. 25

Hello Families! Just a quick reminder about our writing notebooks: Your child is responsible for writing the writing topic in his/her notebook at the end of the day. We do this as a class and I explain what they should be writing about at home. Many students are doing a fabulous job of writing complete sentences and checking for capitals and periods. Some children are reporting that they either forgot or did not have time to write at home. Please remember that this assignment has many purposes, all of which will help your child become a more fluent reader, writer, and communicator. I encourage you to work with your child on this assignment and have discussions about the topic before they write. Thank you for your continued support. If you ever have questions or concerns, please contact me:-) Here are this week’s spelling words:

Please help your child stretch the words at home and record the sounds he/she hears. I hope you all had a warm and safe holiday with your families and friends. I really missed my students over the break and we had a great first day back at school (although we were all a little sleepy by mid-afternoon. Here are some reminders:
1. Continue to count money (coin) at home. I know this can be frustrating, but if they practice at home and at school, they will eventually get it!
2. READ, READ, and READ some more. This will guarantee an enjoyable, beneficial, and confident-boosting activity that you and your child can do together.
3. Talk about punctuation in books such as commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, question marks, periods, and exclamation marks. We are learning about all of these and they help build fluency.
4. We are learning about nouns, verbs, antonyms (opposites) and synonyms (words that mean the same), so please use this language with your child.
5. Continue to practice telling time at least to the hour and half hour.
