Classwork for Tuesday 9-1-20

Ok, this is my first attempt. Fingers are crossed.

Reading: Click on the link above. It should open to my Bitmoji classroom. Once the picture comes up you will see a book on the large screen titled “There Might be Lobsters”. Students need to watch and listen to the story. Before the story begins, tell them “it is a fiction story, which means it’s made up by the author”. Then tell them there are two main characters in the story, Eleanor and Sukie. Now click on the link (on the picture of the book) and have them watch and listen. Feel free to pause the video at certain points and ask them a question so that they can practice the strategy check for understanding. Once they are done, have them orally answer the question the reader poses at the end of the story. She asks, “what happened in the story, what was the problem in the story. Have your child use the sentence stem….The problem in the story was that Sukie was_________________. What made Sukie finally go in the water? Sukie finally went in the water because she ___________________. Give your child a body break if they need one, then go to schoology and click Course and then click on the First Grade ELA course. Do the assignment.

Math: click on the link above and this time click on the computer screen. Students will follow along with the video and then you will go back to schoology and click on the math course. Then, have them see if they can find the math course folder on their own and let them click on it.

Please let me know if the link above gives you any trouble.

Writing: Go to the ELA course in Schoology and click on the writing folder for details.

Welcome Back to School!

I’m sure you never thought you would be starting off the school year virtually. This is certainly new to all of us and we will have to work together with patience and understanding as we all learn new procedures and learn how to use the new learning platform- schoology.

Tomorrow we will begin the week with all half days, this means that the first week of school, Monday, August 31 through Thursday,  September 3rd, the school day will be from 8:55am-12:00pm. Also, tomorrow and the week ahead I will be calling individual families, learning more about Schoology, and reaching out to students virtually to begin creating our classroom community of online learners.

Please take the time tomorrow morning to get familiar with Schoology and checking my blog and your email for updates. To check out parent resources for Schoology click on this link: http://www.livebinders.com/play/play?id=2686610

Schoology will be available for students this Monday 8-31-20. Attached is a step-by-step guide on how students login.http://How-Do-Students-Access-Schoology-1

We as teachers are also learning how to use this platform so consider it under construction and little by little we will all become proficient. I was able to create a discussion question for the students, try it out if you would like. Click on courses and then click on “Answer the Question” (hopefully it still looks like I created it, as I made the course Icon Saturday night and today (Sunday) it defaulted to blue, so I tried again, I’ll check it Monday morning). Aside from that, I will try to show them on Wednesday how to open it and do it together orally.

Students should use their Chromebook or home computer to sign onto the district website by using the same User Name (their student number) and password that they used last year. They will be able to access Schoology from the Student Portal and students using district issued Chromebooks will have two tabs open at start up, the district student portal page and the Schoology page. New students will have their passwords set to their birthday (MMDDYYYY) as per MiStar.

I know this may seem stressful but we will work together to learn this new platform. I will be helping students during our live meetings and the more I learn, the more helpful I can be. This will be a much slower start to the year, but we will make it through this transition together. I will try to answer your question the best I can, but there may be times that I will say ” I don’t have the answer to that right now, but will see if I can get it for you”.

I’m exited to meet my new learners, and grow together with them during this Fall 2020 virtual start to the year! I think we can all say it’s a first for us:).

Take Care,

Mrs. Kearney

Please Read…info about signing up for all year on-line schooling. Time sensitive material.

Greetings Parents,

On Monday, August 10 the Board of Education approved a plan for all Dearborn Public School students to return to school on-line. Students K-12 will take classes online at least until October 1.  At this time the board will reevaluate conditions to see if it is possible for some or all students to begin returning to their classrooms perhaps in a blended model of in-class and on-line learning.

The District understands there are parents who want their children in a 100% virtual learning program no matter what phase the State is in or how other students in the District are attending school.  For the parents who want a 100% on-line option for the entire school year, the school district has created the Dearborn Virtual Learning Program for students K-12.  Parents selecting this option are opting their children into the program for a one-year commitment.

In order to meet staffing, transportation, and several other components of our new school environment, it is vitally important to know how many students will join the Virtual Program. Parents seeking more information and/or are interested in opting their child/children in this program are highly encouraged to visit Snow Elementary School on the Culver side on Friday, August 14 from 9am-2pm. School administration and staff will be on hand for enrollment/questions. (This will take place outside with social distancing and masks will be enforced).  If you have children at different grade levels and buildings, you do not need to attend meetings at multiple schools.  Opt-in forms will be available and parents can opt-in all their children at one location.

If you are not comfortable meeting in a safe environment at the school or are unable to attend on one of the scheduled days, please call or email the school so we may discuss this option and begin the opt-in process for your children.

We understand there are many questions, concerns, and uncertainties as we approach the start of the school year.  Our Back to School Reopen Committee has spent many hours considering all of the health, safety, logistical, and educational concerns before making their recommendations. Our Board spent many hours reviewing those recommendations including a six hour Study Session to hear from the various sub-committees and stakeholders.  We are now ready to move forward, together, to ensure what will be an interesting, but great, start to the 2020-21 school year.

Thank you.

Snow School Wants to Wave “good bye”…Come join us

June 8, 2020

Dear Snow Families,

On behalf of the Snow Team, we would like to wish every Snow family and safe and relaxing summer break.  We are so proud of how the whole Snow community came together during this difficult period to support our students. Each child is precious to us and we miss them dearly.

To help our students continue to make progress throughout the summer break, we will be posting suggested summer work.

Thursday, June 11 is the last ½ day of school for students.  The Snow staff would like to say goodbye to students for summer time by standing along Culver Street at  11:00am on June 11.  Staff will be waving goodbye and sending their best wishes to all Snow students.  We are asking any family that chooses to participate to drive south down Culver at this time and wave to staff and honk their horns!

As we receive information regarding the 2020-2021 school year, we will be sure to communicate through the district website and our Snow blog.  Have a wonderful break!

The SnowTeam

Thank you,

Amal Alcodray
