Peer Pals

Dear Snow Parents,

Snow Elementary is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for our students with and without disabilities. As part of our efforts to support students with disabilities we have developed a program to promote awareness.

Peer Pals is dedicated to building relationships between general education students and students with special needs.  This program allows general education students to develop empathy and understanding of differing abilities. It allows for students with special needs to build friendships with same age typically developing peers. Some students will be paired in social/academic activities with a peer pal.  Student participation is voluntary.

Last week in science students used their windsocks to measure wind direction. They also made a cloud rain and this week they published their informational text on weather tools. It’s been a busy writing week as they completed two opinion pieces, one of them a district assessment.  In math  they made fish and yesterday put them in order from longest to shortest, measured them and recorded their length. Also yesterday they began their work as producers making clay figures to sell to Mrs. Slater’s class as part of our economics unit in social studies. Next week we will be consumers and purchase from them.

Absences, Tardies, and Leaving early

Dear Parents,

This is a friendly reminder that it is very important that your child be in school so that they do not miss out on learning. If your child has a fever or is really ill with a stomach bug then of course they need to be home healing.  Students who are repeatedly absent are having a hard time keeping up.  It is also important to make doctor appointments after school hours or on scheduled days off or early in the morning on  late start days. Keeping students home on half days, pulling students out early for appointments or to see their siblings perform in a sporting event and keeping them home when they could be at school negatively impacts their learning as they miss lessons, tests, and activities that get them ready for second grade.

Thank you,

Mrs. Kearney

Science Night and NWEA testing

Next week we will be taking our NWEA reading test on Friday. Please have them well rested.

Family Science Night

Dear Snow Families,

We are very excited to bring to Snow Elementary School our 4th Annual Family Science Night!  It will take place on Thursday, January 26th 6:00-7:30 p.m.  The evening will begin in the gym with a “Wacky Science” presentation by Scheer Magic Productions.  This will begin at 6:00 p.m. sharp, so please plan accordingly.  After the assembly, you and your family will have time to walk around the school to see the wonderful science projects that the students have accomplished.   We invite you to celebrate our success and support your student’s science skill development.

Sincerely,

The Science Fair Committee & Snow PTA

Achievements Showcase

WORK HARD AND BE PROUD OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS Showcase:
Dear Students and Families of Snow School,
There are many wonderful milestones that have been accomplished by our students at school and in our community. As part of our Leader in Me Program, we would like to showcase these milestones. If your son/daughter individually, or as part of your family, a group or a team, has risen to the next level in anything-sports/reading/volunteering, etc., or has shown great leadership, participated in charity events, helps out at Scouts, church, or in another way, please send in documentation and we will post these in our new showcase for Leadership. Items, with names!!!, should be sent to Mrs. Zechar. Your items will be returned after the month they have been posted. If we get a lot of entries we might have to hold on to yours for a bit before it gets posted. Thanks for your help in celebrating our Snow School Community!

Happy New Year and Thank you and More!

Happy New Year,

Hope 2017 is off to a great start for you and your family. When students return we will begin a new measurement unit using objets (paperclips, linking cubes etc.) to measure items. We will continue to practice time as in telling it to the half hour and/or drawing the hands properly for the hour and half hour because some students are having difficulty.

Also this month, we will begin our winter round of NWEA testing starting the week of January 17.  Make sure they are getting plenty of rest and talk to them about taking their time. Students will also be taking the district writing test. The genre is opinion so if you have the opportunity ask them their opinion about something and have them give you a reason/explanation for it. If they are complaining that they are bored, have them write their opinion about a topic. In my opinion…provide 2 reasons..restate opinion at the end.

I sent home a sheet with information of how to log onto a website called IXL. Students were using it in the classroom and most of them know how to get on, if they can’t remember, the sheet should be in their folder.  They can practice all subjects on this website. It is a 30 day free trial.  I really like it so I will see what a subscription costs, if it’s reasonable/affordable I will purchase it. Make sure they are going on Moby Max  and My On to read and reading books.

I’ve updated the spelling list if you want to give them a head start with the words:)

I’d like to say thank you for all the gifts I received, I truly appreciate your kindness/generosity.

See You Soon,

Mrs. Kearney

About next week

Dear Parents,

I want to let you know that I’m back and we are trying to get into our routines again. I injured my ribs due to a fall.  My plan is to come in next week but if it starts to worsen the pain/soreness I may need to take a day off to sit still and heal. Because of my condition we will have a low key holiday celebration.  We will just watch a movie and if you would like to send in a snack/treat with your child or drop off at the office to share with everyone, you can. I will not be doing a sign up sheet or anything.  Some suggestions are washed grapes, sliced oranges, cheese and crackers, chex mix, pretzels, hummus, veggies, ranch, and cookies.  Reading logs will be sent home today. They are taking a math test (we’ve been working really hard these past two days practicing telling time) and a spelling test today.  Next week’s spelling words are located under “spelling list” on the blog. I hope you have a great weekend and safe travels if the weather acts up (well, always safe travels)!

Spirit Week is next week so check the purple paper that was sent home to see what they should wear.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kearney
