Martin Luther King Jr.

Dear Parents,

I want to let you know about a few of the things we are doing today for MLK Day so that if students come home and tell you the story, you hear it from me as well.  I’ve done this in the past and am doing it today. We have read about and discussed books about Martin Luther King Jr. In an effort to have students feel a little bit of what unfair feels like I’m having the boys do school work while the girls get to have recess because “girls are better than boys”. I heard many great comments coming from the boys, “this is not fair” , “I’m telling my mom/dad” “well boys can skate faster than girls”, “this isn’t think win, win”. I’ve asked the boys how they are feeling and they did a great job expressing themselves. Later today, the boys will get candy or gum and play on the computer while the girls have to take the spelling test because “boys are better than girls”. We will then discuss how they felt and put it onto a graphic organizer. We will also compare and contrast blue and green M and M’s using a Venn Diagram and explore how they are different on the outside but the same on the inside and how this relates to humans.

Later today the girls will have to do the work the boys did and the boys will take the spelling test.

I’m sending home a sheet for students to read on Monday about Martin Luther King Jr. Please take a moment out of the day to honor him and the work he has done for our Country by reading and discussing the article.

Thank You,

Mrs. Kearney

NWEA/MAP Assessments Window, January 8 – February 2, 2018

January 8, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians:

During the weeks of January 8 – February 2, 2018 your child will take the NWEA/ MAP.  This is our fourth year that we have used this test. The results of this test are / and will be used to determine your child’s instructional level and to measure academic growth throughout the school year, and from year to year. Each test will take approximately 40 to 60 minutes to complete and will be administered on different days (Please see teacher blogs for testing schedules).  Measurements of Academic Progress (MAP®) tests are unique in that they adapt to your child’s appropriate level of learning. As a result, each student has the same opportunity to succeed and maintain a positive attitude toward school.

The MAP® test is administered three times a year; fall, winter and spring.  For more information on resources for parents, download the Parent Toolkit at www.nwea.org

Please talk to your child to take her/his time and do his/her best. On the NWEA/MAP  students will be tested on the following subjects:

  • Kindergarten 1st Grade and 2nd grade students are tested in Math and Reading
  • 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students are tested in Math, Reading, Language, Science

Please remind your child of the following test-taking tips.

Before the Test:

*Develop a positive attitude. Tell yourself, “I will do my best on this test.”

*Get a good night’s sleep the night before the test.

*Get up early enough to avoid rushing to get to school on time.

*Eat a healthy breakfast.

During the Test:

*Relax and Stay calm.

*Listen carefully to the directions the teacher gives.

*Ask questions if you do not understand what to do.

*Read each question carefully. Find the key words. Try to figure out what the question is really asking.

*Read the entire question and look at ALL the answer choices before you make your answer choice.

*Use strategies you learned in class to figure out the answer.

*Take your time!

Please encourage and motivate your child by letting him/her know that the formula for success is: taking your time and doing your best.

Thanks and Happy new Year!

Hello,

I just want to say thanks for the gifts, I appreciate your generosity 🙂 Also thank you for hosting a Holiday Party for the kids, they LOVE them. I’ve uploaded the spelling words for the next test already. It is a homework free break, they’ve been working hard so they deserve take a break. However, if they want to read or practice math they certainly can.  MyOn for reading and Moby Max is a good site to do both on. Math playground is a free website for math games they can use.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday,

Mrs. Kearney

Friendly Reminder

Dear Parents,

Just a reminder…I’m allergic to scented products. Scented products like perfumes, scented lotions, strong shampoos, and especially laundry products make breathing difficult for me and cause headaches. If you could use laundry products that are labeled “free and clear” (detergents, fabric softeners, dryer sheets) on your child’s clothing that would help me out greatly.  Your support with this issue is appreciated.

Thank You,

Mrs. Kearney

I am sending out a hard copy as well, just in case you don’t get a chance to read this and for those who do not subscribe.

Spelling this week

Good Morning,

I just want to let you know the spelling words will be hard for some students this week. If your child has been struggling with his/her spelling tests please have them spend extra time practicing them.

I’m sending home a time quiz the students took on Tuesday. Please look it over with your child and practice time to the half hour or hour with them, depending on which ones gave them trouble. We have been working on time to the half hour for a couple weeks and it’s still proving to be difficult for some. My plan is to give them their unit 3 test on Friday so they will be bringing home a practice test on Wednesday for homework. Check their work when they are done with it and reteach any items that gave them trouble.

Enjoy Your Day!!
