Join Me in a google meets

Hi, on Wednesday I’ll be attempting my first google meets with room 29 students. I have it scheduled for 3pm. If you have time to help them join us, that would be great. Ms. M. will be there too, and I’ve invited the specials teachers as well. Here is the link, you should be able to just click on it and join. Be sure to check that the camera icon is turned on in the address bar. Can’t wait to see you!!!

Ok, so if you click on the above it should open a calendar that you can use to guide your child’s day if you’d like. There are links on there that should work as well. Students can click on them for science and writing so they can do their assignments. I started with science with Mystery Science-Sun, Moon, Stars. I know some of the kids may have done it. I did add an expectation to it so it won’t hurt for them to redo it if they have the time and feel well.

There are also links to videos for writing. They will need to watch those in order to complete the writing assignment. On Friday you can send their completed writing by sending me a picture. I’ll do my best to figure out how to put it on the blog. You can take a picture of them holding it or working on it along with a picture of just the writing so I can look it over.

If you would like you can give them a spelling test on Friday and send a picture of that as well.

My office hours hours and phone number are posted at the bottom and there is information about the special’s teachers blogs as well.

Please let me know right away if the link above does not open.

Thank you again for all your efforts during this time.

Zearn and iready Expectations

Hi Families,

First and foremost I hope all of you are healthy and adjusting to this new way of life. I know it certainly has its challenges, and especially for you, as you have had to become substitute teachers, daycare givers, all while still working, whether at home or on site. Thank you for all your help and support during this time. Today, we (first grade), second grade, Mrs. Bush, and Ms. M. met online to get started on how and what to incorporate into their homeschool routine in order to meet the expectations the district has for students and grading their work. This week, and continuing throughout the rest of the school year, we will be grading students on their time spent on iready, epic books, and zearn. Next week a writing assignment will be added, and then the following week social studies and science will start (unless we are told to start sooner than we chose to). Each one of those (writing, social studies, and science) will have an assignment expectation too which will be used to give them a grade. It is going to be very important that you develop a schedule/routine for them so that they are working daily on their distance learning.

For this week continue on iready, epic books, and Zearn. I have checked and still have students not working on them. Again, we will be using their time spent on them as a grade.

These are the expectation for each:

iready- 2 hours a week (approximately 25 minutes daily) some of you have been doing more than that, others of you need to step up your game because you are either doing nothing or just a few minutes. Access iready through your student portal.

Epic Books-This will be used to do their reading homework (like their book bag) and same requirement-20 minutes of reading 5 days. We are able to monitor their time spent on that site as well. Epic Books is under Links on the blog and there are directions on my blog from a March 30th post. Class code is ubs7172

Zearn-at least 3 lessons a week-doing more though will allow them to get through the entire first grade curriculum. If they get through first grade, they will automatically start 2nd grade lessons. Some students are quite behind in module 4 because they have not gone on since school started at home or have just done 1 or 2 lessons. If they continue at this rate, it will only make next years math that much harder for them. We are able to see what lessons the students are on, what day and times they go on, and how many lessons are completed, FYI.

So I wanted to send this today as some background information so that when the other expectations (we just got a lot of them from the higher ups a few minutes ago) come your way, so that this part of their routine will be in place and easier when it’s time to add a little bit more to their (and your) day.

If you need help with anything or have questions you can text or call me. I’ll figure out hours of availability once I have more of an idea of how to accomplish the tasks we have been given and give them to you. For the rest of this week you can reach me between 10:00am and 11:00am or 2:00pm-3:30pm. 248-556-6744 kearneb@dearbornschools.org

Hang in there, we are all on this ride together :0

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kearney

Welcome Back!

I hope you have had a nice and healthy Spring Break, and parents I’m sure you enjoyed taking a break from monitoring/helping them with school work. We had our staff meeting late this afternoon and were told in the near future we have to include a few assignments for social studies and science. When I learn more information I will be sharing that with you. For now, make sure they are back on Zearn and iready and whatever routine you had going on for school work, start it back up as best as you can. I know many of our families were doing a great job with that:) As of now first grade teachers will continue to track their progress on Zearn and iready. Stay tuned…and have a great evening.

Set up a routine for your child if they are losing motivation

If you are having trouble motivating your child to spend 15-20 minutes each day on both Zearn and iready try creating a routine. Sit with them and discuss a schedule. Ask them when they’d like to meet their time quota for those two items. After Breakfast, after lunch, or after dinner? etc… Then make that part of their daily routine. Same for spelling, writing, and the science and social studies, or reading from scholastic, epic books, or book bags . They are not expected to do everything at once or everyday (aside from Zearn and iready). I realize that may be difficult. So if you schedule the others for twice a week, then set a time and day for which two or three you want to add to those two days and stay consistent with it so it becomes a true routine and you won’t have to keep on them. Especially if you let them know those things are a must do and there will be consequences it they don’t follow through.I am able to see how much time students are spending on Zearn and iready and there are a decent number who are not getting there minutes in. It is important that they get on there and exercise their brain. I have found personally when my girls were young and lived at home, and as a teacher, routines make progress happen, and keep things running more smooth.
