NWEA Testing Dates

As you may know, Lindbergh Elementary does its winter NWEA testing this month. Below are the dates our class will be taking NWEA:

Tuesday, Jan. 14th – Math NWEA

Wednesday, Jan. 22nd – Language Arts NWEA

Please help your students prepare for these tests by making sure they get plenty of rest the night beforehand and have a good breakfast.

T-Shirts and Permission Slips

T-Shirt Order

Lindbergh is proud to have earned both Blue Ribbon and Lighthouse status this year! None of this would have been possible without each and every member of the Lindbergh community flying the spirit of success together. For this reason we thought it would be nice to have new shirts made to show our Lindbergh pride! Order forms were sent home today and there is a digital copy below. Please complete the order form if you are interested in any of the items and return it to your child’s classroom teacher with the correct amount in cash by Tuesday, January 14, 2020. All shirts will be in the color royal blue to symbolize our prestigious Blue Ribbons status!

Please need that payment must be submitted as cash in exact amounts.

5th Grade Drug Education Seminars

Yesterday, 5th grade students were sent home with a permission slip about a drug education seminar that will take place on the following Thursdays: January 16, 23, and 30th each seminar will be for 30 minutes each and will be about how to avoid harmful substances.

If you would like your student to participate, there is no need to send the permission slip back to school. Only send in the permission slip if you would like your student to opt out of the program. Please note students will not miss any lessons while they are at the program.

Homework Clarification

It is has come to my attention that students accidentally wrote down the homework for tomorrow, not today. Here is what the homework should be:

4th – Lesson 16 #s 1, 3, 5

5th – Module 4 Lesson 1 all (number line, then a, b, c, d)

Students will not be penalized if they do the wrong day’s homework.

Science

We will start this week investigating the relative distance of the planets in our solar system. We will take the quiz about this investigation on Wednesday. Here is the link to the lesson so that students can prepare:

https://mysteryscience.com/astronomy/mystery-6/planets-solar-system/78?code=NjI3MDM1MjE&t=student

Later in the week, we will begin our final investigation about life on other planets. We will take the quiz on this lesson next Monday once we review. Here is a link to the lesson so that students can refresh themselves before the quiz.

We only have two more investigations to complete before we take our science test. Our science test will be next Thursday. I will pass out the review sheet on Wednesday, but I have attached it below.

Page one will be due Tuesday the 14th, and page two will be due Wednesday the 15th.

5th Grade

We will begin our new social studies unit on settlement and colonization in the Americas. Our goal is to complete the first lesson in the unit this week.

Spelling

Spelling words for this week will be posted on my Spelling City page: https://www.spellingcity.com/users/JuntunenA

Week of 12/16/19

It is our last week of school before the break! There will be many fun activities happening, including out holiday party on Thursday. Below you will find a reminder about our holiday party, and our homework/classwork for the week. Homework IS posted by day so that you can look to see what the assignment will be.

Holiday Party Details!

Please do sign up to bring in items if you plan to do so! Here is the link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040D4BAEAA23A6FC1-room

Remember, there will also be an exchange of books $10 or under during the party if your child would like to participate!

ELA

Students will continue their work on text structures this week, both in whole class lessons and small groups. In writing, students will draft their three body paragraphs of their persuasive essays.

Homework in ELA will be to read for 30 minutes each night. Students show they completed this homework by getting their planner signed.

Math

5th Grade Math

Students will complete the last three lessons in our unit on fractions. We will review for their test on Thursday, and take the test Friday.

Lesson 13 Homework (Monday night): Problems 1a, 1d, 2c, 2d, 3 a, 4

Lesson 14 Homework (Tuesday night): Problems 1a, 1c, 2b, 2c, 2d, 3

Lesson 14 Homework (Monday): Problems 1, 3, and 4 – MUST draw a picture to show understanding

Lesson 14 Homework (Tuesday): Problem 2

Lesson 15 Homework (Wednesday): Problems 3 all, 4 all, 6 all

Science

Students will complete an investigation about the planets and gravity. We will engage in the investigation Monday, review it Wednesday, and take an assessment on it Thursday.

The only homework will be studying for the assessment. Here is a link to the mystery so students can review it at home: https://mysteryscience.com/astronomy/mystery-7/gravity/290?code=NjI3MDM1MjE&t=student

As a note, I found the assessment of last week’s investigation to be unfair, and so it will not count toward students’ science grades. I am working to edit our future science assessments so that the questions fairly measure what our students learn.

Social Studies

5th Grade Social Studies

Fifth graders will engage in some introductory lessons related to their new unit on early settlement and colonization in the Americas.

Test grades will be turned in this week (full disclosure: another teacher has to show me how to go in and access students’ online submissions. Thank you for your patience as I learn all the systems Lindbergh uses).

4th Grade Social Studies

Fourth graders will finish our current lesson about immigration to the United States. We will mostly be reflecting on the experience of people immigrating to America through Ellis Island.

No spelling test this week. Happy Holidays!

5th Grade Math Study Guide

Happy Sunday, everyone! I realized that I did not give 5th grade their study guide for their math test on Friday like I intended to. I am truly sorry for this mistake. I have attached a copy of it if students wish to begin on it today. Students will also receive a copy of it tomorrow in class.

To make up for giving out the study guide late, I will be giving students time to work on the study guide tomorrow in class. Once again, I apologize for this.

Holiday Party Details!

Room 208’s holiday party will be this coming Thursday, December 19th from 2:30 to 3:30. Our festivities will include a book exchange, holiday bingo, cookie decorating, and a movie. Please read below for details about the gift exchange and requested classroom contributions.

Cookie Decorating (and Other) Supplies

In order for our activities to run smoothly, we are requesting that families send in items for students to use at the party. Here is a link to a Sign Up Genius where you can volunteer to provide an item:

https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040D4BAEAA23A6FC1-room

Please send your students in to school with items on the morning of Thursday the 19th.

Book Exchange Details

Students can also participate in a book exchange. Students will swap books in the style of a gift exchange. Please send your student to school on Thursday with a wrapped book. Be sure that the book is:

  • Wrapped in paper or concealed in a bad
  • Appropriate for a fourth or fifth grade reader
  • No more than $10 in value

Books will be made available to students who are not able to obtain them so everyone can participate in the swap 🙂

Two PTA Annoucements

Santa Shop TOMORROW

Our students are visiting the Santa Shop tomorrow morning. Please have them bring their form and whatever financial resources you wish to send them with.

Battle of the Books

Friday, information permission slips were sent home about Lindbergh’s Battle of the Books. I have attached that information sheet/permission slip below. Please refer to it for any information about the event. Permission slips are due back this Thursday, December 12th to the PTA mailbox in the main office.

Math

5th Grade Math

Fifth Graders are continuing to add and subtract fractions using different representations. We are beginning to work with fractions greater than 1, and we are applying our knowledge to story problems.

I have scheduled the end-of-module math assessment for Friday, December 20th. I will pass out the review packet late this week. Students will not have to be concerned about studying for it until after their social studies test this week.

Homework resources for math are linked on the homework tab of this blog.

4th Grade Math

Students take their mid-module test this Friday, the 13th. We will finish the last lesson on the test on Monday and begin some lessons on division. On Wednesday and Thursday we will review, and on Friday we will take the test.

Homework resources for math are linked on the homework tab of this blog.

ELA

This week, we are comparing different informational text structures, such as compare/contrast, chronological, and problem/solution. In writing, we are outlining the body paragraphs of our persuasive essays.

Science

Students will complete an investigation about the phases of the moon this week. Students will take a quiz about the investigation on Friday. Below is a link to the lesson so students can review it.

https://mysteryscience.com/astronomy/mystery-5/moon-phases-lunar-cycle/77?t=student

Social Studies

5th Grade Social Studies

Students will wrap up their unit on early encounters between Europeans, Native Americans, and Africans by sharing short writing pieces they have created, reviewing material, and taking their unit test this Thursday.

The review guide was sent home last week. We will go over review guide questions #1-5 tomorrow and the rest on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please note that students need to bring a completed review guide to class in order to participate in the review session. This does not mean that every answer is correct, but that I still that students have put effort into answering each question on their own.

4th Grade Social Studies

Fourth graders are beginning a new lesson in social studies in which we think more deeply about why people have immigrated to the United States. Tomorrow, students will be sent home with an assignment related to this.

Spelling

Spelling words for this week will be on spelling city. The words this week are again homophones, words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Students will be quizzed on their ability to hear a sentence and use the correct spelling of the word. Cold words will be homophones from last week.
