Card Flip Communication

Card Flip Communication Routines

Now that the school year is underway, you have become familiar with some of the procedures that make up our daily work routines. Signing and checking the planner are extremely important follow-up for you as parents/guardians.

There will be times when your child may have a card flip.  Please consider this as a reinforcement of the expectations for our school rules for being respectful, responsible, and safe.  Remember, whenever a card is flipped, the student receives positive feedback from me and instruction for demonstrating improved behavior.  I’d like to include you in this process.

If your child receives a card flip:

  1. A note will come home in the color of the card flip in your child’s planner (stapled to the day of the flip).
  2. Your child will have written a reflection on the note you will receive.
  3. Review the reflections with your child (you do not need to contact me).
  4. Sign it and have your child return it to school the next day.

Fire Station

This week, the third graders enjoyed a presentation by one of our local firefighters, Lt. Jennifer Wenzel. During this presentation, the students learned about fire safety and what makes a firefighter equipped to do his/her job.

A Word About Graded Assignments/Quizzes/Tests

This week, you’ll begin to receive graded work coming home in your child’s Owl Folder. Please let your child be in charge of his/her Owl Folder. This is an important year for growing good homework habits.  Look at your child’s Owl Folder/Planner together every day with him/her, and then give the responsibility for taking care of it to him/her.

Here is the procedure for graded work.

  • Any graded work will have a % score on it. I typically write a fraction that shows how many points were earned over the number of points possible.
  • Graded work MUST be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school the following day. I keep a record of work that has been returned.
    • I ask you to do this because I want you to be aware of your child’s ongoing grades and I also want you to go over the work with your child.
    • There are also times when I make a mistake. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens!
  • Do NOT throw away graded work.  You will get it all back at the end of the marking period, along with your child’s report card.
  • All graded work has been used to calculate and average your child’s report card grades.
    • Report Card Grades
      • 1=95% or above
      • 2=80%-94%
      • 3=70%-79%
      • 4= 69% and below
  • Work with a checkmark at the top does not need to be returned and is not entered into the gradebook. We have reviewed it in class. This includes Math Sprints.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Parent Meeting Presentation

Welcome to the 2018-2019 School Year!

I am very excited to welcome you to a brand new school year.  You will have many opportunities to support your new third grader this year.  Help your child begin the year on the right foot on the very first day of school by beginning a before-school and after-school routine.  Our goal as a third grade team is to support students as they learn to be independent Haigh Owls and they will need YOUR support at home as well!  Here are some tips for a successful start:

Morning Routines

  • Eat a healthy breakfast OR sign up for breakfast at Haigh.
    • Haigh breakfast begins at 8:15.
    • Students may NOT arrive earlier than 8:15 for breakfast.
  • Make sure you have packed a snack and water bottle
    • Ice water creates puddles on desk-tops.  Avoid adding ice.
    • Re-fillable water bottles with a flip top lid are a great choice.
    • Fruit, veggies, dairy, crackers/pretzels are great snack choices.
  • Make sure that backpack includes the OWL FOLDER and SIGNED PLANNER!  I check these every morning.
  • Bring a pair of outside running shoes for recess.  We will be exercising outside every day (weather permitting)

After-School Routines

  • Unpack that backpack and enjoy a snack together at the kitchen/dining table.
  • Talk about the day, using that planner as a guide.
    • HOMEWORK IS ALWAYS HIGHLIGHTED IN YELLOW!!
    • All other entries are to help you have a fun conversation about what we did in school today!
  • Get going on that homework.
    • It should only take between 15-30 minutes to complete. Stop after 30 minutes.
    • Check off the homework in the planner.  If your third grader has worked for 30 minutes and the work is not finished, take a break and come back to it after some playtime/dinner.  Don’t spend more than 2 sessions of 30 minutes on homework.  At that point, write me a note in your third grader’s planner that explains what happened and then I can help in school.
    • Parents, make sure you sign that planner every day! I check them and I look for your notes/signatures.
  • Your third grader needs to be in charge of his/her backpack, planner, and Owl Folder.
    • The planner and Owl Folder should be put back into the backpack and placed in the SAME SPOT every day by your child.  Help younger siblings to respect the backpack and its contents.
    • You will be tempted to take over.  DON’T DO IT!  This is an opportunity for your third grader to become responsible.  You’ll be amazed at how it will transfer over to other areas of his/her life.

Again, I’d like to welcome you to a new school year.  It will be a years of ups and downs, lessons learned, friends made, and new adventures.  I look forward to working together.

NWEA Slime Day!

Today, we had a wonderfully fun and messy celebration at Haigh!  It was Slime Mr. Short Day!  Every single grade in our school was able to meet our NWEA Winter Challenge with our scores.  To celebrate, each class sent 2 representatives to slime Mr. Short.  It was a terrific way to celebrate the work we have done.  We are fortunate to have such a dedicated student body at Haigh!  Enjoy the video of third graders sliming Mr. Short!
