Circus Field Trip

Our field trip to the UniverSOUL Circus was a HUGE success!  Thank you to our chaperones, Mr. Abunasr, Mr. Frederick, Mrs. Wallace, and Mrs. Tressler.  We are able to provide amazing experiences for our students because we have such a supportive Haigh family!  Our next field trip is scheduled for October 1 at the firehouse.  Because this is such a short field trip, chaperones will not be necessary.  I am posting a master schedule of our field trips in a link for your planning purposes.  Remember–if you want to chaperone on a field trip, we would love to include you.  BUT you MUST have a completed background check on file.  No exceptions.  It takes 2 weeks to process so you need to plan ahead.  Don’t miss out on some wonderful opportunities to share in the learning that we have planned for third grade!

Card Flip Communication

Card Flip Communication Routines

Now that the school year is underway, you have become familiar with some of the procedures that make up our daily work routines. Signing and checking the planner are extremely important follow-up for you as parents/guardians.

There will be times when your child may have a card flip.  Please consider this as a reinforcement of the expectations for our school rules for being respectful, responsible, and safe.  Remember, whenever a card is flipped, the student receives positive feedback from me and instruction for demonstrating improved behavior.  I’d like to include you in this process.

If your child receives a card flip:

  1. A note will come home in the color of the card flip in your child’s planner (stapled to the day of the flip).
  2. Your child will have written a reflection on the note you will receive.
  3. Review the reflections with your child (you do not need to contact me).
  4. Sign it and have your child return it to school the next day.

Fire Station

This week, the third graders enjoyed a presentation by one of our local firefighters, Lt. Jennifer Wenzel. During this presentation, the students learned about fire safety and what makes a firefighter equipped to do his/her job.

A Word About Graded Assignments/Quizzes/Tests

Image result for grades clip art

This week, you’ll begin to receive graded work coming home in your child’s Owl Folder. Please let your child be in charge of his/her Owl Folder. This is an important year for growing good homework habits.  Look at your child’s Owl Folder/Planner together every day with him/her, and then give the responsibility for taking care of it to him/her.

Here is the procedure for graded work.

  • Any graded work will have a % score on it. I typically write a fraction that shows how many points were earned over the number of points possible.
  • Graded work MUST be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school the following day. I keep a record of work that has been returned.
    • I ask you to do this because I want you to be aware of your child’s ongoing grades and I also want you to go over the work with your child.
    • There are also times when I make a mistake. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens!
  • Do NOT throw away graded work.  You will get it all back at the end of the marking period, along with your child’s report card.
  • All graded work has been used to calculate and average your child’s report card grades.
    • Report Card Grades
      • 1=95% or above
      • 2=80%-94%
      • 3=70%-79%
      • 4= 69% and below
  • Work with a checkmark at the top does not need to be returned and is not entered into the gradebook. We have reviewed it in class. This includes Math Sprints.

If you have any questions, please let me know!
