Donor’s Choose: Good News!

Image result for gratitude image

Due to the amazing generosity of our community, our class will be getting a new rug for our meeting area!  I am so grateful for the support that has been offered by Haigh families, friends, and the surrounding community!  There are a few nuts and bolts that will need to be completed on my end to finish the ordering process through Donor’s Choose.  As soon as it arrives, photos will be posted to celebrate this new addition to our classroom!  Thank you again for your generous spirit and for supporting our third graders!

Donor’s Choose Update

Sitting Spots Primary Rug - Rectangle (10\' 9\" W x 13\' 2\" L)

We are almost to our goal!

I received an important email this morning!  For today only (January 25) Donor’s Choose will double any donation made to this project!  If we are able to raise $142 today, our project will be fully funded and our class will get a beautiful rug.  This rug has colored shapes that are arranged in rows that will allow us to form groups quickly and will make sure that everyone feels like they are a part of the learning community when we gather together.  Please use the link below if you would like to make a donation.

Carnival Volunteers Needed!!!

Haigh Families,

On Monday, January 29th, we will be hosting our third annual HAIGH CARNIVAL for our January PBIS celebration. Students who have maintained positive behavior will have the opportunity to attend the carnival and play some awesome games and even win some prizes!

However, the event can only be a success with your help. We are in need of volunteers to help run stations at the carnival. If you are able to volunteer your time, it would also be appreciated. The time slots are as follows:

A.M. session – 8:35-11:15                          P.M. session – 12:50-3:25

We need 7 A.M. volunteers and 7 P.M. volunteers. If you are able to volunteer, please e-mail

Ms. Otto at ottoc@dearbornschools.org to sign-up 🙂

Thank you for all of your help and continued support!

Donor’s Choose Project

I have registered our classroom on DonorsChoose.org, an amazing website where individuals can contribute to public schools.

The project I’ve created on Donor’s Choose is called “Learning Together: Gather on the Rug”. Several times throughout the day, we meet together on the tile floor in front of the interactive whiteboard for lessons.  This allows us to come together as a group in a space where everyone sits close to the action, everyone participates 100%, and everyone feels like they are part of the lesson. A rug will provide a more comfortable space for the students and also give them some boundaries so that everyone is a part of the group.

Please spread the word about our classroom page (and contribute if you can)!  Click on the link below to find out information about this project.

New Math Homework Routine!

Dear Third Grade Parents,

Dearborn is adopting a new math program next year and third grade is piloting it for the next few months.  We just started it and the students all received a workbook.  In the new workbook, there are lessons AND homework practice pages.  Students will be assigned homework on a daily basis.

Students need to be responsible for taking the book home each night and returning it in the morning.  This is a new routine from the homework packs.  The routine of reading logs and spelling will continue as usual (although this week we are not doing spelling since it’s a short week and we’re beginning NWEA testing).  If you have any questions, please let me know!

Michigan Project

I am remiss in getting some photos up on this blog!  These are photos of the students working on their Michigan Map Projects together.  This was a terrific project in which students worked together to discover what resources we have in Michigan and where they can be found.  The maps ranged from human characteristics (roads, lighthouses, cities, bridges, airports) to natural resources (copper, forests, fresh water, etc.).  Just click on the thumbnails to enlarge the photos!

The DNR Comes to Visit Us

Today, the DNR came to do a presentation about Michigan Mammals for our entire third grade community.  It was fun to see and touch actual furs from mammals that live in Michigan. The students were able to discuss how the DNR works to protect Michigan wildlife, listen to how these mammals have been part of our history (especially the beaver), and find out some really interesting facts about these amazing creatures who share our state!
