Parent Meeting

We would like to extend a HUGE thank you to the parents who came to our 3rd Grade Meeting this morning!  It was good to see all of you.  This is a big step to making sure that your child has the best that 3rd grade has to offer!

We totally understand that schedules may have interfered with your ability to come.  So, I’m attaching a link to the presentation that the 3rd grade teachers put together.  Please take a moment to view it and explore some of the links on page 5 for web-based learning.  You will also find the links to each of the 3rd grade blogs. You can subscribe to all of our blogs and it will provide you with some variety.  Each of us communicates as a team, but our blogs will look a little different and we all have our own flair when it comes to teaching and blogging!

Extra Credit Science!

Extra Credit work in my class is worth 5 points that is applied to your child’s content area grade.  It also earns your child a Homework Pass!

Here’s how it works:

Every so often, I will post an extra credit option on my blog.  Your child has one week to complete the assignment and send me a photo or video (via email) of the experiment. I will post them on my blog and ask the student to explain what happened in the experiment to the class.  Any materials would be supplied by you, but directions will be posted on my blog.  This is a great opportunity for you to explore concepts more in depth at home.

Extra Credit #1: Science

Celery Experiment

Complete the experiment by following the directions on pgs 6-9.  Bring these pages to school and send me a photo or video of yourself (creative video productions will earn you an EXTRA extra credit point).  Have fun!

Math Homework Hints

This week, the third grade team began sending home math packets for homework!

Here are some helpful homework hints:

  • These math packets are due on Fridays.  Your child will be responsible for completing the homework and it will be checked in as complete.  This will be used as part of their grade on Life Skills, Homework Completed Independently.
  • While the homework packet itself is not graded, it is expected that students work on math in a similar way that they work on reading.  Building time into your child’s schedule for homework that includes 20 minutes of daily reading and 10-15 minutes of math review is an important routine to develop now before homework becomes a part of your child’s overall subject-area grade later on.
  • I have a page dedicated to Math Homework, located on the right side of the blog.  Under this category, you will find links to the homework for each week.  The newest homework packet will be the LAST packet listed on the page..

I hope that you find this homework packet to be helpful and informative, not stressful or difficult.  If your child does not understand something at home, jot a note in your child’s planner and he/she can meet with me individually about the concern.

Field Trip Tomorrow!

The third grade team is so excited about the field trip that we let an error slip by us on the permission slip!  We will be returning to school at 2:00–not 1:00, as stated on the permission slip.  I apologize for any confusion regarding the time frame for the trip.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the school.  A note was sent home today regarding important information for preparing your child for the tramping through the woods!  We are all looking forward to a day of adventure and learning outdoors!

Field Trip to U of M Nature Center on Tuesday!

We have a wonderful field trip on Tuesday.  It’s going to be a full day of hands-on science learning out in nature!  The students will be observing plant/animal interactions and the adaptations that help these partnerships work for the benefit of both organisms.  We will also be collecting and identifying animals that live in a pond habitat.  It’s going to be fun!

A couple of things that are important:

We will be in a wooded area–long pants and appropriate shoes are important.  You can apply bug spray AT HOME to prevent mosquito bites (please do not send in a can).  Your child should also wear a hat to protect them from the sun and/or apply sunscreen AT HOME.  Additionally, we will be eating lunch at the nature center.  Picnic tables are outside and there is an area indoors where students can “camp out” with their lunches.  Please send a bagged lunch and something to drink with your child.  No food will be available to purchase at the nature center.

A huge thank you to the parents who will be chaperoning.  You will be receiving a note home on Monday, explaining your duties. Click on the links to preview: Volunteer Note and Map Plan to arrive at my classroom (room 32) at 9:00.  The office staff will be available to sign you in and issue you a sticker.  You will need to drive yourself to the field trip, since seating is limited on the bus.  Since we are technically at school, you will not be able to take your student home from the field trip.  Students must return to school on the bus. We will be having a follow-up lesson when we arrive back to school. Thanks again for supporting our students!

We will have a wonderful time together, exploring nature and learning about plants and animals that make their homes in Dearborn!
