Keep the Quote Week 3

The winner of last week’s Keep the Quote is…….

Seema A. !!!!!

Congrats Seema!  She had a few students nominate her and give examples as to how she always seems to “be herself” and never gives in to peer pressure or changes the way she dresses, acts, treats others, for the sake of someone else.  They also mentioned how she is not afraid to stick up for herself if she needs to.

This week’s quote is  from the famous Mark Twain.  Today, we discussed what this quote meant to us and ways we can try to “earn the quote”.  The main point of the quote this week is to always do the right thing.  Even if others may not want you to, or look down on you for it, in the end you are making the right choice and others will know it, see it, and celebrate you for it. See below and talk to your child about exhibiting this type of behavior 🙂

Coins for a Cause

During the month of April, we are continuing our endangered animal adoption project. We are reusing milk jugs to collect money for adopting a wolf through the Detroit Zoo, and we need your help!

We are asking for your help with our “Coins for a Cause” challenge.

Bring in as many extra coins as you can to help fill our jugs! At the end of each week, we’ll count up the totals and announce our winners!

Did you know???

A single wolf can eat up to 20 pounds of food in one sitting!

Keep the Quote Week 2

The “Keep the Quote” winner from last week was……

Jenna!!!!!

I had three students nominate Jenna S. and provide reasoning behind why she earned this quote.  On numerous occasions last week she simply provided words of encouragement to help lift others in our class at times they were feeling down.  Great job Jenna!  Keep up the good work and keep spreading kindness to all 🙂 🙂

This week’s quote has to do with just being yourself.  We discussed how we should all love ourselves, inside and out, and not cave into peer pressure from others.  We discussed being a leader, not a follower.  We also talked about not trying to let what other’s think of us affect the way we think about ourselves.  I hope to see students working towards “earning this quote” this week and look forward to the nominations on Friday!

Cardboard Challenge

Good Evening Parents,

The 4th and 5th grade classes are participating in a cardboard challenge in honor of Earth Day. Students are creating a game that is primarily made out of a cardboard box (other materials can be used as well, but the main material should be cardboard). If you have not had the chance to watch the video, Caine’s Arcade, please do so. I attached the link in the Class News blog. The focus is to use recycled materials in honor of Earth Day, please don’t run out and buy items.

Tomorrow, students will have the chance to work on their projects during Science, so they can bring materials in. I understand there may be work that needs to be done at home or with the help of a parent as well. This project will also be used for a grade for engineering design in Science. The students chose to work solo or with a partner, either is fine.

Your child will have a chance to share their game with the lower grades at the end of April (exact date TBD).  Students from grades k-3 will have the chance to play the games while your child runs them 🙂  Should be a fun activity for all to enjoy!  I attached some pictures below of some students’ projects from last year for ideas or motivation.

Happy Making 🙂

Keep the Quote

Keep the Quote

Keep the Quote is a fun, weekly goal-setting  activity that we will do from now until the end of the year.  Each Monday, I will post a new quote (will also take quotes from student recommendations).  We will discuss what the quote means and how we can EARN that quote.  For example, if the quote is “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody”, we would explain that our class should be trying to actively make others feel good about themselves.  They should be giving compliments to others and making sure everyone is included.

On each Friday, we will nominate students who have demonstrated qualities of the quote.  We will vote on one student and give reasons why that student ‘earned the quote”.  When there is a winner chosen, that student gets to “Keep the Quote”.  I will rip it off, we will all sign the back with words of encouragement, and they can take it home 🙂  Then we start again the following week with a new quote to work towards.  This all fits in with the spreading kindness theme, which we have been talking about since reading the book Wonder.

I hope the students enjoy this activity and really look forward to making this a goal- to keep the quote!

Check out this week’s quote above in the picture.

Class News & Spelling Words

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break, too bad the weather wasn’t better for us if you had a staycation 🙂

Below are the Spelling Words for Week 25.  Again, when you click the week, it will take you directly to iLearn, where students can access their practice items for the week.

The class newsletter was also sent home today and linked at the bottom of this post. We will be going to Stout Middle School next week to see the play “The Addams Family” starring one of Haigh’s own- Yasmeen Kaik, a 5th grader!  Permission slips were sent home today and the $4.00 is for cost of bus.

We are in the home stretch of the school year, which makes me so sad.  I am truly loving this class 🙁  This month, we will focus on Poetry for Reading.  Each students is in the process of choosing a poem to memorize, focusing on expression and delivery, for a poetry slam our class will have at the end of the month.  Also, we are celebrating Earth Day during the month of April.  There are a lot of activities we will be doing as a school in honor of Earth Day, more info will come as provided to me.

The 4th and 5th grades will be creating games from cardboard this month as well!  I will attach a video of Caine’s Arcade, so you can get some ideas.  Mrs. Greco will be using this project as a STEM grade.  The entire school, K-3, will get a chance to come play the games your child creates at the end of the month.  Again, more info will come as it is provided to me.
