ReadWorks for Summer

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Summer is a great time to support your child’s reading progress! Students who don’t read much over the summer show a decline in reading performance from the end of one year to the start of the next. Reading over the summer can help your child maintain the reading gains they made during the year AND also help prepare them for next year!

Here are a few simple ways for you to help:

  1. Create your free Parent/Guardian account on ReadWorks.org

ReadWorks is a nonprofit that provides educators with thousands of free, high-quality nonfiction and fiction articles with questions and activities. ReadWorks is inviting you – all parents & guardians – to create your own free account to help your child stay on track this summer, and all year round!

  1. Go to www.readworks.org
  2. Click on “I’m an Educator”  (parents are educators too!)
  3. Click on the blue “Sign Up”
  4. Make sure to choose “Parent/Guardian” as your role
  1. Print Free Summer Reading Packets Now – www.readworks.org/summer-reading

To make summer reading easy, ReadWorks has curated interesting and knowledge filled summer reading packets on a range of levels that you can print and download for free!

Keep these tips in mind when using ReadWorks this summer:

TIP 1: Summer reading should be accessible and enjoyable, so be sure to choose articles that are at your child’s reading level. Don’t be afraid to start with articles from lower grade levels. The important thing is that students, read, read, read!

TIP 2: Aside from giving your child access to these high-quality texts, helping them keep track of their summer reading and discussing what they’ve been read with family members can also go a long way!

Class News

Happy Monday!

Wow, we only have 8 1/2 more days of school left! I just can’t believe how fast the year has gone by. As the year winds down, the gravity is setting in that I will never have this exact class again and it breaks my heart!  I have said it before and I’ll say it again, this year and this class was a special one for me. I feel so lucky to have had this class.  I truly love and have enjoyed teaching every one of your children this year.  I will make sure to enjoy these last moments and memories we create over the next 8 days.

I am not sending home a Class Newsletter this week. There are no Spelling Words or homework for the remainder of the year. All testing is complete (except for some DRA’s I need to do).  Over these next 8 days, students will be working on a final narrative writing, creating a google slide presentation on a chosen Math Unit, and finishing up assignments in S.S. and Science.

Here are some important events and reminders for the remainder of the year:

Tuesday, June 5th- Treble Maker concert

Tuesday, June 12th- 4th grade Talent Show

Wednesday, June 13th- End of Year Picnic at Levagood Park

Thursday, June 14th- Last Day of School- dismissal at 11:45 AM.

Keep the Quote Week 9

The winner of last week’s quote was….

Malak!!!

Many students nominated Malak last week for the many things she does on a daily basis to make her friends feel good, help them out with work or whatever they may need, and of course the hard work and effort she puts into her school work every single day is evident to all! Great job Malak!

This week’s quote is the last for the school year!  It goes along with the theme we have been focusing on since February- spreading kindness.  This quote just reiterates the fact that the little things we do, the way we treat people, each and everyday means more than what we may do every once in a while, even if it is a grander gesture.

Keep the Quote Week 8

The winner of last week’s quote was…..

Jana!!!

She had quite a few nominations from students in our class about the many good deeds she did last week and continues to do for others!  Keep carrying those good deeds out Jana, and spread your happiness to all!

This week’s quote is focused around putting in work.  We talked about how if we want to achieve greatness, or have things go our way, we need to put in the work and effort.

Keep the Quote Week 7

The winner from last week’s quote is….

Zane!!!!

Zane has sure proved himself to be an “extraordinary friend” this year.  It was no winder so many students nominated him for this quote.  He has shown kindness and generosity to so many in our class this year, he truly deserved this nomination!  Keep on being amazing Zane!

This is week’s quote has to do with acting on spreading kindness, even with small deeds.  Sometimes we have every intention or thoughts about ways we are going to spread kindness or something we want to do for someone, but it doesn’t happen right away or not at all.  We discussed how even the smallest of deeds more so much more than our big ideas or thoughts.
