Monday April 8, 2019

Good evening,

I hope everyone had an enjoyable break.

I just want to let you all know that I’ve been summoned for jury duty for Monday so I won’t be in class. I’ll keep you posted if I’ll be gone for longer than this one day.

Please remind your child to be well behaved, helpful and kind to the substitute teacher ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday March 25, 2019

I’d like to thank the PTA for providing the pizza party our class won. There wasย a door decorating contest for March is reading month. That is why I sent home the owls for the students to assemble and decorate–they were the main part of the decoration. I painted a tree for our owls to sit in ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Our class won for the Second grade. I just wanted to thank those of you in the PTA for continuing to support our students.

Our reading strategy this week will be asking questions throughout the text. We’ll be using a story for the week to practice this skill. Questions such as who, what, where, when, why, how to help understand key details of a story or text.

Spelling words this week focus on the long a sound: dare, rare, stare, fair, chair. Dolch words: any, pretty, does, does, read, every.

We’ll be finishing up module 4 in Math with an assessment, and I’ll also be weaving in skills from the next module. Same skills and strategies but with larger 3 digit numbers to add and subtract with.

We’re also finishing up our Social Studies economics unit and will have that assessment over 2 days: 1 for the computer section and 1 for the written part.

We’ll be finishing up our Earth science unit about land forms changing quickly and slowly.

I’m sure you won’t forget, but No School the week of April 1-5 for Spring Break. We’ll be back on April 8.

Enjoy the week ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday March 18, 2019

Good morning! It is so nice to finally see the sun shine ๐Ÿ™‚

Tomorrow morning is our field trip to the Dearborn Historical Museum. Please have your child dress for being outside. We will be walking between 3 buildings and leaving our coats on in each building for the activities we’ll be doing. Wear gym shoes.

Our spelling words this week: cage, range, large, pledge, bulge. The Dolch words: off, fast, tell, of, will.

Our reading strategies will continue with using pictures and illustrations to help us understand text and how repeated phrases in a story add to the meaning.

We’ll continue with opinion writing this week by writing what they enjoyed on our trip with reasons to support their opinion.

Math continues with adding and subtracting 2 and 3 digit numbers.

Social studies is our trip this week as we learn about Dearborn’s history and life in the past.

Science continues with ways the Earth has changed slowly and quickly to create landforms.

Enjoy your week!

Monday March 11, 2019

Good morning ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope those of you who came to Literacy Night last Thursday enjoyed yourselves. There seemed to be many enjoyable activities.

Late Start this Wednesday. School begins at 9:35.

Thank you to those of you who have sent in the field trip permission slip and $5. If you haven’t please do so as soon as possible. The office needs to send the admission money over prior to our trip.

This weeks spelling words focus on 2 sounds of the letters c and g: cent, city, cave, girl, gym. The Dolch reading words: gave, give, carry, call, clean

We are finishing our opinion writing this week on the topic “a book I like to read”. We’ll be creating a finished product that will look like a book shelf. The students always love this final copy!

Our reading strategy continues with using the illustrations to gain information about the characters, plot and setting of a story. This week, I’ll be using a variety of stories, 1 which is a story for social studies about how a goat is used to make a rug! (The natural,ย  capital and human resources used to make a rug from goat hair). This story is based on a real person from the Navajo nation in Arizona.

As you can tell from reading, our social studies unit continues with understanding the resources used to make products: human (people), capital (machines, tools, $$), natural (animals, water, plants)

The students have done very well with our 2 and 3 digit addition. Now, we get into subtraction. We’ve done this before with “unbundling” a 10 to move it to the ones place. This is the same process as many of us learned but called it borrowing or trading.

Science continues with the processes that shape the Earth’s surface.

Library book check out is this Thursday. Please return library books by Wednesday.ย

Enjoy your week and yay for warmer temperatures! ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday March 4, 2019

Welcome March ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Winter is slowly moving on….

Many events happening this week:

PTA Book Fair. Our class will be going Thursday morning. Please send money then if your child would like to purchase something. All proceeds go to the HF PTA.

Our yearly Literacy Night is this Thursday 5:00-6:30. Many fun reading and writing activities planned. This is always an enjoyable evening. I hope to see you there ๐Ÿ™‚

You may have heard that 2nd grade has a field trip coming up. We are going to the Dearborn Historical Museum Tuesday March 20 9:00-11:30 am. only. This is a 1/2 day field trip. No lunch is needed, we’ll be back in time for lunch at school. Permission slips will be coming home today. We’ll be learning a bit about the pioneer life in Dearborn.

Our Spelling words this week focus on silent letters: knee, gnaw, write, lamb, doubt. The Dolch words: there, saw, ride, sing, want.

Our reading strategy will focus on narrative stories. We’ll be using information from the illustrations and the words to understand characters actions, setting and plot.

We’re back to opinion writing for a couple of weeks and since March is Reading Month, we’ll be writing our opinion on a book we like with 3 appropriate reasons.

Math continues with addition and subtraction of 2 and 3 digit numbers while understanding place value and the “bundling/unbundling” concept (trading/borrowing).

We’ll be learning about the Natural Resources needed to make products this week in social studies. We’ll also learn new vocabulary: human (people), natural(things found in nature), capital(money/tools) resources.

Science continues with how landforms are made.

Spirit Friday is dress like a book character for March is Reading Month.

Whew! Enjoy the week ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday February 25, 2019

Good morning!

If all goes as planned, this morning will be our last time for WIDA testing: the writing portion is left.

A full week of school expected ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Spelling words feature the “schwa” sound. The “a” before or at the end of words: along, agree, again, idea, comma. Dolch words: green, always, them, very, because.

Our reading strategy circles back to how stories are set up: the beginning introduces the characters, setting and problem. Middle events work toward resolving the problem. Ending wraps up with a solution and life lesson.

Since we’re reading narrative, we’ll be focused on writing a narrative story. The students all began a story a few weeks back but due to snow/ice days I didn’t get to wrap it up like I wanted to. This week, we will be focusing on their story ending and what their main character learned from their experiences.

Math continues with mental and written strategies composing 10 tens to 100, moving on from 10 ones to 10. Written strategies will also be emphasized.

Science still is learning the names and pictures of land forms, also learning how they are formed.

Social studies continues with economics. This week the new vocabulary is “opportunity cost”: this is our second choice when we can’t have all that we want due to limited resources of money.

Have a good week and stay warmย  ๐Ÿ™‚

Tuesday February 19, 2019

We had a fun Valentine’s Day–I hope your children enjoyed going through their valentines ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Thank you to everyone who sent something in. It made the day an enjoyable one!

Our WIDA testing begins this week, Tuesday and Wednesday and again next Monday.

Our Spelling words this week focus on 2 spelling versions of the same sound: oi, oy: moist, oil, broil, toy, royal. The Dolch words are these, made, walk, white, right.

Our math focus this week continue with 3 digit subtraction. The students are catching on to this but it does take time, no matter what method we use.

Our reading strategy is cycled back to story structure and retelling a story from beginning, middle, and end. With some stories this also included the lesson learned (if using folktales or fables)

We’re finishing up our informational writing this week, then moving on to narrative again.

We’re finishing up one social studies unit and will begin our unit on economics. This week focuses on scarcity–due to limited resources we can’t have all that we want.

In science this week, how rivers are formed because water flows down hill from mountains will be the lesson. We’ll make a mini mountain and see the water move.

Enjoy your week!

100th Day of School is tomorrow

Now that we’re home once again, if you’re looking for something to do with your child/children, here’s an idea.

Tomorrow is day 100 of school so, if they’d like to get creative and take 100 of something found around the house: noodles, beans, cereal pieces, stickers, paperclips, etc. They can make a picture or a design using those 100 pieces. I’ve had some very creative projects in the past ๐Ÿ™‚ You can glue onto a piece of construction paper or just regular paper, a side of an empty cereal box or shoe box. Anything will work!ย I have had students even draw 100 of a design if they didn’t have glue or anything to use at home.

Some have glued 10 rows of 10 to make 100. Others have used those 100 to make a picture of some kind. I’ve had students spell their name then add a design with the rest of theย 100 pieces.

This fits in with our math unit and is a fun way to practice counting 10 groups of 10 to make sure you have 100 then getting creative!

Have fun and I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with when you bringย your creation to school ย ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday February 11, 2019

Heavy hearts here today at Henry Ford. We’ll get through this with love and friendship.

1/2 day this Thursday-school dismisses at 11:45. No school this Friday or the following Monday.

Your child can bring their valentines any day and we’ll save them to pass out Thursday morning.

Our WIDA testing will be delayed until another time per Dr. Moughni. I will update you.

Spelling words: clown, growl, crown, round, loud. Dolch words: found, about, out, around, brown

We’re continuing our informational writing combined with science and our reading strategy of using images to learn about the landforms on Earth.

Math continues with subtracting 2 digit numbers from 3 digit numbers using “unbundling”/trading/borrowing. The students see to understand this concept and are catching on.

We’ll have the social studies test part 1 tomorrow and the computer portion on Wednesday.

We welcome a new student today–Solomon ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday February 4, 2019

Yay, the groundhog did not see his shadow so spring will be here sooner ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  After last week, it can’t come soon enough!

Late Start this Wednesday. School begins at 9:35.

Due to the short week last week, our spelling list will stay the same as last week’s.

I’m having to move much of last week to this week so our reading strategy continues to be expanding our vocabulary for informational text using captions, pictures, the table of contents and glossaries.

We are finishing up our narrative writing prompt about a time we had fun, then will go back to informational writing about land forms on Earth.

Math will still focus on the “unbundling” strategy for subtraction.

In social studies we’re learning about personal compared to civic responsibilities of citizens.

Science will be learning about the land forms on Earth and how they are created.

S.T.E.A.M. Night is this Thursday, 5:00-7:00. This is always a fun evening filled with engineering and other fun scientific activities. I hope to see many of you there!
