Revolutionary Tug-of-War!

Posted by Amy Gwizdz on May 10, 2012 in Fifth Grade |

Yesterday, 5th graders participated in a Revolutionary War version of Tug-of-War!  We had the Confederate Army (blue team) vs. the British (red team).  The Confederate Army also had a little help from the Allies!  (white team).  After it was over, the Confederate Army and the Allies won (of course!) but everyone got red, white and blue popsicles for trying their best and being good sports.

April/May Newsletter

Posted by Amy Gwizdz on April 23, 2012 in Fifth Grade |

Spring has sprung and 5th graders are busy!  In math, we wrapped up a unit on fractions and ratios, and are working on coordinates, area, volume and capacity.  Please remind your child that he/she should be signing up for mini-quizzes to raise any math grades that may need a boost!

Science has been very exciting as well!  We have completed our Physical Science unit and moved on to Earth Science.  We will be focusing on space and our solar system.  Special thanks to Mohammad Mroue for setting up our field trip to the Henry Ford Community College planetarium and solar system walk!  A good time was had by all.  We have one more science-related field trip, and that will be on April 30th with High Touch High Tech and Rocket Ryan.

In Language Arts, we are working on a research paper about space, as well as comprehension strategies in reading.  We continue to study 20 spelling words each week, and we are focusing on using correct spelling in our writing.  All students have his/her own dictionary, and should be using them consistently.

Don’t forget to check out our blog at https://blog.dearbornschools.org/gwizdza for updated news and pictures of classroom happenings!

Goodbye, Mrs. Hussein!

Posted by Amy Gwizdz on April 5, 2012 in Fifth Grade |

It is with sad hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved student teacher, Mrs. Hanan Hussein!  Mrs. Hussein completed her student teaching this week, and we will miss her sorely!  She has been with us for the majority of the school year, doing her pre-student teaching in the fall, then returning to complete her student teaching.  She is a hard worker, who has taught our students well!  Good luck in all your endeavors, Mrs. Hussein!

For her last science lesson, Mrs. Hussein introduced moon phases, and the students produced moon phases made out of Oreo cookies.  Thanks for the sweet treat, Mrs. Hussein!

Canine Visitors

Posted by Amy Gwizdz on April 5, 2012 in Fifth Grade |

Mrs. Gorman brought her two Cavalier King Charles dogs in for a lesson on Wednesday.  Students learned about the care and keeping of the dogs, as well as information on the breed itself.  They fed the dogs treats and watched at the dogs popped bubbles from a bubble machine!

Thank you to Mrs. Gorman for sharing her precious pups!
