Does your child want to prepare for a career right out of high school?  Earn an associate’s degree at no cost to your family?  Take challenging academic classes and earn acceptance at a top-tier university?

All of those are possible with Dearborn Public Schools.  The district is proud to offer students a wide assortment of high school options to let them create a path that is right for them.  Parents and students in middle and high school are invited to learn more during three online Secondary Options sessions. Guests can attend online to get overviews of the different options, and then ask questions to learn more. The presentations will also be recorded and available later on the district YouTube channel.

Students are encouraged to start planning now for next year’s classes.

Eighth grade students will need to commit in the spring if they are interested in attending certain programs that run for all of high school. This would include applying for Henry Ford Early College programs that allow students to attend for five years and get both a high school diploma and associate degree or vocational certification at no cost to the family.  Henry Ford Early College allows students to specialize in medical or education careers, and Henry Ford Early College Advanced Manufacturing focuses on certain trades and technical fields. 

Some academically advanced eighth grade students will also be invited to attend the Dearborn Center for Math, Science and Technology.  Students in that program spend half their school day at the Dearborn Heights Campus attending advanced classes and half at their home high school.

For students already in high school, the Secondary Options sessions will touch on many other options available to students including trade and other vocational programs, Advanced Placement classes, free dual enrollment in college classes, and the Henry Ford Collegiate Academy.  Like the Early College, the Collegiate Academy allows students to attend for five years to earn a high school diploma and an associate degree.  The Collegiate Academy and Early College programs are provided through a partnership between the district and Henry Ford College.

Algebra 1 students who did not earn credit for Algebra 1 due to not meeting the criteria, will have the opportunity to take the Test Out Exam.  The Test Out Exam is scheduled for August 25, 2021 @11:00am at ASC.  Students will need to sign up through their high school counselors.   The Test Out Exam will consist of two parts. Students will need to earn 78% or higher on part 1 in order to take part 2 exam.  Each test will be given 90 min to complete.  Students will be informed if they earned credit by the end of June via email/letter.  Students who are interested in taking the test out will need to email their high school counselors to schedule their Test Out (see counselor contact info below).

All 8th grade students attending the Summer Academic and Enrichment Program, will attend the program at their current middle school.  Eighth grade students, including mandatory course recovery students, will have the opportunity to earn one 1/2 of a high school study skills credit  for attending and successfully completing the summer school learning program at their respective middle school. Students earning credit will be allowed a maximum of five excused absences within the eight week program. If you are interested in earning this half credit for high school, please contact Woodworth’s main office (313-827-7100) to sign-up for the program, if you have not done so already. ATTENTION all students that will be attending Edsel Ford High School beginning next year. Edsel Ford will be hosting an Open House next Wednesday, June 2nd at 11am. During the open house event, a tour of Edsel Ford High School and their facilities will be provided. Students interested in attending the Open House are asked to arrive at the front of Woodworth Middle School (main entrance off Ternes) at 10:20am. Bus’s will transport students to and from Edsel Ford High School for this event. Students will return to Woodworth at approximately 12pm. I have visited the classrooms to assist in selecting your Elective classes for next year, 2021-2022. If you were absent when I came to your classroom, an email with an invitation to join my Learning Lab for make-ups was sent to you. If you did not attend, then you have until Tuesday May 11th (by midnight) to make your selections. Please use the written and video instructions to help you make your course selections. These can both be found on your Schoology page for Mr. Mustenon for Team B and Mrs. VanderLaan for Team B. The Society of Women Engineers Detroit Section is excited to announce they will be continuing their virtual STEM sessions this spring.  

The group unfortunately had to cancel last year’s Girls’ Engineering Exploration annual event scheduled for March at the Michigan Science Center.  The group has created a virtual engineering series as an alternate way to bring the programming to families. 

There will be six virtual sessions, each 1 1/2 hours starting at 11 a.m., offered this spring on a variety of engineering topics. Access to an internet connected computer/device and ability to join a virtual audio and video platform will be needed. These sessions will be interactive and most will require additional hands on materials. Materials needed will be common household items and/or SWE Detroit will get you the materials before the session so all can participate. The dates & topics can be found below.

• 5/1: Chemical Engineering
• 5/8: Automotive Engineering
• 5/15: Materials Engineering
• 5/22: Industrial Engineering

SWE will also be hosting an informational parent and teacher virtual session with resources and opportunities to further engage your child/student in engineering activities. Ms. Gronau visited all 8th grade Science classes to explain and discuss Spring Test Outs for high school courses. Students were instructed to email me if they feel that they qualify for an area of test out.
