LAST day of NWEA testing is tomorrow – Language

6th Grade

Journal:  Story Starter – – One day a man riding a cow appeared in my backyard.  When I asked what he was doing there, he replied… finish the story.

Students worked on finishing the rough draft of their children’s stories.

HOMEWORK:  2nd and 6th hours, rough draft must be done for tomorrow.

8th Grade 

Journal:  Poem – – Write a poem that has 3 stanzas, 6 lines per stanza, and has the mood of “anticipation”.

1. Bring it together!

2. For EACH of the four poems:

a. Determine the mood and the tone

b. Choose at least three figurative language examples from the poem to help explain how the mood/tone has been created

c. Create an explanation at the bottom of each poem explaining your conclusions (HINT: CER)

Tuesday

Students took the Science NWEA today and we will finish NWEA testing Thursday with the LANGUAGE section.

6th Grade (3rd hour ONLY)

Journal:  Dream – – Martin Luther King Jr. “had a dream that one day” all people would be treated equally.  What would your “dream” be for the world?  Explain and please be serious.

Students worked on finishing the rough paper draft of their Children’s Book story.

HOMEWORK:  Paper rough draft must be done for TOMORROW.

6th Grade (5th Hour ONLY)

Journal:  Top Ten – – Explain the Top 10 things you want to do in 2018 (they do not have to be related to school at all).

1.Poetry Analysis Activity:

2.You MUST be done with all three layers by the end of class tomorrow.

a. Annotate for meaning each of the 4 poems

b. Underline/highlight and label the different types of figurative language

c.  Write to explain how the different uses of figurative language create the mood and the tone for each of the 4 poems.

HOMEWORK:  Book projects are due in 14 days!

Wait…Is it Spring?  Is it Winter?  I can’t keep up!  Be safe out there everyone.

6th Grade

Journal:  Worksheet – – Your journal will be on the worksheet that I handed you on your way in 🙂

Today we continued to review the use of quotation marks and then students had the time to work on their children’s “books”.  On average, students were able to rough draft 4-6 of the 12 “pages”.

HOMEWORK:  Reminder:  There is no school Monday.  BIGGER REMINDER… your next book project is due Tuesday, February 13th.  You will get the new directions next week, but you should be reading your books NOW!

8th Grade

Journal:  Your Choice – –

Today we worked on our poetry analysis activity and also went to view the DCMST science fair so that students could see high quality examples and our expectations for their projects.

HOMEWORK:  No school MONDAY 🙂  Book projects are due January 30th.

NWEA Testing next week…

Tuesday is Science and Thursday is Language.

6th Grade (2nd and 6th hours ONLY)

Journal:  Journal:  Quotations – – Write eight (8) sentences using quotation marks in different ways.

Today students were introduced to their individual children’s book task today:

a. Write a “book” that is no more than 12 pages long.

b. Be sure to include all aspects of the plot diagram.

c. Turn story into a slideshow of pictures to be shared.

HOMEWORK:  No homework 🙂

8th Grade

Due to today’s testing schedule I did not see the 8th graders for regular instruction.

OOPS!  NWEA Testing totally messed me up and I forgot to post!

6th Grade (3rd hour ONLY)

Journal:  “I Need to Find a Place” – – Read the poem below and complete the following:  1.  Explain what you think the poem means.  2.  Pick out one line that jumps out at you and explain why that line sticks with you.  3.  Explain how this poem does or does not relate to middle school students.

I need to find a place 
Where happiness is in everyone 

I need to find a place 
Where I can be myself and express myself freely

I need to find a place 
Where kindness is everlasting 
Where you don’t have to pretend to be something you’re not

I need to find a place 
That is caring and kind
A place—where nothing or nobody does wrong to other people

Students then continued working on analyzing the 4 assigned poems.

Today we finished discussing and practicing the quotation mark rules.

8th Grade

Tomorrow is Ugly Sweater Day / Holiday Clash Day!

6th Grade

Journal:  Overall – – Overall, tell me how you think your team did on the story pitch project.

Today students participated in a Gallery Walk and discussion of each others posters to provide feedback.  Students then started to work on their feedback questions for the project – they will finish them tomorrow:

Answer as a CER:

  1. Explain what you have learned about creating a narrative story that flows from beginning to end.
  2. Explain what you found to be difficult about creating a well told story.
  3. Thinking about the final product that your group created and the feedback that you received from other groups, what is one thing that you would change about your story and why?

8th Grade – 1st hour ONLY (5th hour attended a bullying assembly)

Journal:  College Prompt– – Using a piece of wire, a STEM car window sticker, an egg carton, and any inexpensive hardware store item, create something that would solve a problem – trust me…I won’t check to see if it works!

Tomorrow is Santa Hat, Reindeer Antlers, or Elf Ears Day!

6th Grade

Journal:  Conflict – – Write 3 scenarios – one that has a person v. person conflict, one that has a person v. self conflict, and one with a person v. nature conflict.

Students were given time to finish their presentation posters and to work on the three IXLs that were assigned.

8th Grade

There was NO journal today.

Students wrote a Literary Analysis Essay today as a capstone to our suspense unit.
