New assignments have been posted in Google Classroom- River Oaks 2nd Graders for my 2nd grade students and in Mrs. Fowler’s Class 2019-20 for my 3rd graders.
Please check Google Classroom Daily as assignments are posted daily in order to help break up large projects and to help students and families pace themselves.
As always, students need to be reading for 30 minutes per day and at least 15 minutes of that needs to be on RAZ kids. Students need to listen AND read each book. Students then take the quiz. If they do not pass the first time, they need to REREAD the book and then take the quiz again. Do not keep retaking the quiz by guessing over and over. REREAD then take the quiz. Students need to test their READING comprehension, not their listening comprehension.
I am still waiting to find out about Google Meets. As soon as I find out, I will let you know. Until then, I will not be able to Meet you Face to Face.
It is with a sad heart that I have to inform you that I , as well as all district staff, have to suspend Google Meets with students. Hopefully this will be temporary. It is frustrating that the irresponsible behavior of a few have to negatively impact the learning of others. I will miss seeing your smiling faces and hearing about your accomplishments until this matter is resolved. Please know that I am just an email away if you need anything. If you haven’t been in touch with me in awhile, I may be reaching out by phone. Keep checking your email accounts. If you have updated or switched emails or phone numbers, please email me with your current contact information. My email is fowlerj@dearbornschools.org.
I am attaching the Superintendent’s memo in both English and Arabic regarding this situation.
April 24, 2020
Greetings,
Since our school buildings closed on Friday, March 13th there have been thousands of positive interactions between students and teachers via phone, e-mail, and on-line. This is why I am so deeply troubled and concerned about a few individuals who have taken advantage of our new school environment, made poor choices, and become disruptive to the learning process.
These disruptions occurred at the middle school level while teachers were trying to provide instruction to students during a Google Meeting. Unfortunately, these disruptions crossed a line and became threatening and obscene. It has also been discovered that, in some cases, students willingly gave their user information and password to these individuals allowing them to gain access to the meetings. Students are responsible to protect the confidentiality of their district issued accounts and passwords. It is a direct violation of district guidelines and protocol to share passwords with anyone and we will not tolerate those violations as we ensure the security of our network in order to protect our students.
The behaviors that these students exhibited are not acceptable at any time but especially now, as we all deal with a worldwide crisis, the district will not permit this type of disruption to learning. It is our responsibility to protect instruction and we will be enforcing every disciplinary action allowed by our Student Code of Conduct. For those individuals who violated the law, we will involve the Dearborn Police to issue tickets, and if needed, take further and more serious legal action.
Although teachers and students have been safely using Google Meetings, I asked our Instructional Technology Department to temporarily suspend all student access to Google Meeting on the District network. We are also working to have staff use a platform for on-line meetings that has been used in the District for several years and is specifically developed for use in the classroom. The software gives teachers more control over a meeting including ending if someone attempts to gain access without permission.
I proudly started my career as a teacher and, like many of you, my wife and I are also adjusting to working at home and supporting the learning needs of one middle school and one high school aged child. The actions that took place this week disrespects the efforts that all of you are doing to support your child’s education. As Superintendent, and as a father, I am sorry this occurred and apologize to the students who were the victims of these behaviors.
Just as my wife and I have taken an active role in our own children’s learning and on-line activities, I ask all parents to use this experience as an opportunity to talk with your child about proper behaviors while on-line including protecting your personal information such as usernames and passwords.
Since March 16th, I have heard many encouraging stories of student learning taking place at all grade levels. This past week has been a shift for all of us as we transitioned to the new learning plan. Of course there has been a learning curve for everyone involved including staff, students, and parents. We understand this transition to “Continue the Learning” is going to create frustrations and questions. Please know that our teachers, principals, and administrators are here to help all of our families during the weeks ahead. Our continued goal is to be supportive during this very difficult time. Remember, we are all in this together and together we will become an even stronger Dearborn community.
Stay home. Stay safe. Save lives.
Regards,
Glenn Maleyko, Ph.D.
Superintendent
Please visit the Learning Plan to get all the official documents.
Here are the key points:
Elementary school
Teachers will check in with students at least twice a week via tools such as Google Hangouts, email or phone calls. Students are expected to attend all Google Hangout sessions and engage in the work assigned by teachers. It is essential that parents/guardians and teachers continue to communicate so teachers are fully aware of the student’s well being and progress.
Middle school
Teachers will check in with students at least twice a week via tools such as Google Hangouts. Students are expected to attend all Google Hangout sessions and to complete assigned work. Students and parents are expected to contact teachers if there are questions about instructional content and to communicate about the student’s well being and progress. Participation in Hangouts and completion of homework are used to count attendance.
High school
Students are expected to attend all Google Hangout sessions and complete assignments. These will be used to determine attendance. Students and parents are expected to contact teachers if there are questions about instructional content and to communicate about the student’s well being and progress. Students in ASAP (extended day for credit recovery) will have additional lessons and learning expectations. The last day of class for seniors is May 21. Seniors who were on track to graduate as of March 11, will graduate if they continue to engage in learning as required for the class.
Grading policy
Dearborn Schools has developed new grading policies for each level to be used during the school closure, while being mindful of the state order to do no harm to students. Students who cannot perform the work for reasons beyond their control, such as poor health for them or a parent, will not be penalized. The District will make every effort to ensure students can access the work. Those who chose not to participate could be recommended for summer school or face not being allowed to continue to the next level next year.
Dearborn Public Schools Parent/Student Grading InformationDuring the Continuity of Learning
Individual teachers will be responsible for assessing student progress and providing feedback. Assignments will be graded and entered in MiStar. Work completed prior to April 20th that demonstrates a student’s mastery of learning will count toward his/her grade.
Elementary Assessment and Grading Guidelines
For this marking period, students will receive feedback on weekly assignments in the form of narrative comments.
Meeting: regularly submitted work and attended check-ins
Accuracy of work assessed on standards/graded

Assignments
Reading
In addition to the April Learning Plan and Google Classroom, students MUST login to RAZ Kids every day.
We will continue to use Raz Kids as our assigned reading. Students who are reading at levels A-J will continue to read and complete at least 2 quizzes per day. Students reading at levels K-Z will only be required to complete one quiz per day. Need to read 20 minutes daily. Keep reading until 30 minutes are up or split it, 10 minutes then another 10 minutes
Your child should listen, read AND do the quiz for each book. They need to be working on level up, not in the reading room. Also, if your child is having trouble on the quiz with a specific skill for example, the author’s purpose: they can use IXL to strengthen their skill then complete the quiz. If your child does not complete all tasks, they can’t go to the next level.
Complete the Google Classroom reading and activity. Then go to IXL to do the purposes of government.
Dearborn Continuing Education Plan
The Dearborn Public School’s Continuing Education Plan has been approved and will go into affect Monday. I will be posting the plan on here so that parents can see what the district expectations are for teachers, parents, and students. I think it’s a great plan and I look forward to continuing to work with all of you.
Oh my goodness! I miss you all so much! I hope you all had a good “break”! I made face masks and ear protectors for my family and older neighbors. I also baked some delicious chocolate chip cookies! What have you been up to? Please let me know what you’ve been up to this last week!
Writing: Look for the writing prompts assigned to your child’s portfolio. Post to the “Journal”. *Remember each writing prompt should be 5 sentences!
Google Meet
Tentatively scheduled for 10:30. I will send an email with the link and I will post in my Goggle Classroom. I will be posting an assignment to share during that meeting.
Google Classroom
Students if you have not visited my Google Classroom, please log into Clever. Then click Google Classroom. Then accept my invitation. I post materials and assignments there. Please use the following graphic organizer to help keep your writing neat and organized.
Third card-marking report cards are now available on Parent Connect. I have included the directions from the district on how to access the report card for your child.
The Elementary Report Cards for Marking Period 3 are currently being processed and will be available to parents in ParentConnect, Monday April 6, 2020. Following is some information on how parents can access report cards data in MIStar ParentConnect. Please note that if you have more than one child, you should be able to see data for all your children and you do not need separate logins for the different schools (if your children attend more than one school).
How do parents login to ParentConnect? To login to ParentConnect, parents need their PIN and password; this is how it is obtained: Parents go to the Dearborn Schools’ website (dearbornschools.org) and then the ParentConnect link. If they don’t know the login info, they click the (Need Your Login Information) link and it will prompt them to enter their email address (as provided to the school and entered in MIStar), and then click Submit. This process emails them their PIN and Password. After logging in, click on the “report card marks” module.
If you have difficulty, feel free to contact the Help Line at 313-827-8400
We will have a Goggle Meet tomorrow, Friday, April 3 @1:00. New time!
