Spelling Words for Week of 5/7

This week we continue our study of plural nouns. This week we are focused on irregular plurals. That is when the spelling of the singular noun is changed to make the plural. For instance, the singular  “foot” becomes the plural “feet.”

Vocabulary your child should know:

noun- a person, place, thing, or idea (ex. girl, school, pencil, freedom)

singular – one of a noun (book, box, puppy, man)

plural- more than one of a noun (books, boxes, puppies, men)

Spelling words:

  • woman – women
  • goose – geese
  • mouse – mice
  • foot – feet
  • man – men
  • cactus – cacti
  • tooth – teeth
  • person – people
  • child – children

Students need to be able to spell both the singular and the plural and know which are singular  and which are plural.

Field Day is Monday 5/14

River Oaks Field Day is Monday, May 14. Our class will be playing the games in the morning from 9-11:30. We will then have lunch in our classroom. Everyone will have pizza, chips, and water, or you can bring a lunch from home.

Every student needs to wear tennis/gym shoes to school. No sandals or flip-flops allowed. Please send an extra shirt, pants, or  towel in case your child gets wet from the water games.

Sunscreen and bug spray need to be applied at home.

I am also in need of 5-7 parents to help our class with the games and with serving lunch in our room. If you are able to help, please return the form or call Ms. Sandi in the office 827-6750.

Donations of cases of bottled water are also needed. If you are able to donate, please send them to the office.

Muffins With Moms (grandmas, aunts,…)

We are celebrating the “moms” in our lives, whether it’s  mom, grandma, aunt, stepmom, or just a special mom-like person in your child’s life.

Please join us for a Mother’s Day “Muffins with Mom” Party on Friday, May 11th at 11:30.

We will serve muffins, coffee, tea, and water. Then feel free to join your child in the cafeteria for lunch at 12:15.

A note went home. Please RSVP if possible for planning purposes, or just show up! There will be plenty!

Money, Money, Money

Please continue to work with your child counting coins. Students need to be able to identify both sides of a coin and know its value. This week we have been counting change up to a dollar. We have also been practicing how to make an amount using the fewest number of coins. Today we introduced how to figure out how much more money we would need to make a dollar starting at a given amount by counting up using the arrow way.

We still have quite a few students still struggling identifying and knowing the correct value of each coin. Please, please, please work with your child on this. Counting money is a necessary skill and it reinforces number concepts such as counting by five’s, ten’s, and one’s as well as building number sense of numbers through 100 by finding different ways to make the same amount and combinations to make 100 (number bonds).

Spelling Words for 4/23

Contractions are what we are working on in spelling this week! A contraction is a shortened form of two words pushed together. An apostrophe is used to show that letters have been removed. Students need to know how to spell the contraction with the correct placement of the apostrophe, as well as, the two words that were combined to make the contraction. For instance, I’m is the contraction of I am. The apostrophe shows that we took the ‘a’ out of the word am.

The words are:

  • didn’t
  • they’ve
  • she’ll
  • he’s
  • wouldn’t
  • can’t
  • we’ve
  • we’ll
  • she’s
  • couldn’t
  • don’t
  • doesn’t
  • let’s
  • aren’t
  • wasn’t

Field Trip is This Friday, April 20th!

It’s finally here! Our field trip to the zoo has arrived! A few quick reminders and announcements.

Everyone

  • Bring a disposable lunch and beverage. We will NOT be buying treats and drinks at the zoo.
  • Wear weather appropriate clothing- it is forecasted to be in the 40’s while we are there. (yes the high says 53 but that doesn’t happen until after we leave). We will be outside most of the time. Dress in layers so that if you get warm, you can take a layer off. You probably will need gloves or mittens.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. We will be walking a LOT.
  • Have FUN!!!

Students

  • Do NOT bring money. We will not be buying anything.
  • Follow all school rules and listen to your adult leader. If you do not follow school rules, your teacher will be contacted and you will be removed from your group.

Chaperones

  • Please arrive and check into the school office by 8:45.
  • Due to space on the bus, we have asked you to drive separately, feel free to carpool with other parents who are going. We have 27 chaperones for all of 2nd grade, so I am sure there will be many opportunities to carpool. It does cost $8 to park. The best option, is to follow the bus, so that we arrive together and groups do not have to wait to get started.
  • Bring a large sturdy bag, tote, or backpack to carry your group’s lunches.
  • Please do NOT purchase your group any snacks, drinks, or souvenirs. It is not fair to the other students if one group gets something and the others do not.
  • Please have your group back at the main gate by 1:00.
  • Please make sure all students have used the restroom before exiting the gates and boarding the bus.
  • You may take your child home after the field trip if you wish, once we arrive at school and you check them out at the office.

Building Rocket City

Friday we will be starting the culminating project of our 2nd grade Economy social studies unit. Each 2nd grade student will be creating a business in our fictional community – Rocket City.  We will then build our model city with our businesses in the cafeteria.

We NEED:

boxes of a variety of sizes and shapes- cereal boxes, small shipping boxes, cracker and snacks boxes, shoe boxes, Costco/Sam’s club bulk boxes. Please send in any and all boxes that you can by Friday.

We will be sending an invitation to our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony soon!
