Spelling Words for 4/9/18

This week we are practicing the /eer/ sound. This can be spelled two ways -eer and -ear. They both sound the same so we have to be able to tell if it looks right and sounds right. It also helps to know the meaning of the word to help determine which pattern to use.

The words are:

  • near
  • deer
  • spear
  • gear
  • peer
  • fear
  • steer
  • clear
  • rear
  • cheer
  • career
  • year
  • appear
  • sneer
  • hear

I just noticed that the printed list has the word “clear” on it twice. Please replace the duplicate with “hear.” Thank you!

Math Test Results Are In!

Today, your child is bringing home their Module 5 End of Unit tests.  Please have your child correct the problems that they did wrong. Please sign and return the test to me on Monday, April 9.

The overall results are much improved. Yay!!!! However there were still some careless mistakes such as adding when the problem asked for subtracting, drawing/writing the numbers incorrectly, and miscounting. Please remind your student to read the problem carefully, and to carefully write and draw their work neatly so that they can clearly see what they are doing. We will keep working on it in class.

I am going to send home some practice packets with students that need it. They are not for a grade, but are to provide practice and support for the student. Use at your discretion. If your child did not receive one, and you would like a packet, please email me at fowlerj@dearbornschools.org.

Reading Logs Due

The Green Reading Log for this week is due tomorrow. Remember every student should be reading at least 20 minutes per night. Please complete the form including a parent signature. For every 100 minutes read, your student gets a sticker in their reading passport. We have a school goal of 35,000 minutes, so we need the reading logs to tally our minutes. If you still have last week’s yellow log, bring that too!

Don’t forget to take a trip into a good book!

Subtraction with Vertical Form and Chips and Place Value Chart

Here is a picture of a problem we did together.

  1. Stack the problem vertically.
  2. Draw chart with the “whole” number (the largest number).
  3. Use “magnifying glass” to decide if we need to borrow and unbundle from another place value. If you do, X out a circle draw an arrow and then draw the 10 units. Don’t forget to X out the one you unbundled (moved).
  4. If you unbundled (borrowed) make sure you show that in the vertical form. Your numbers and picture should always match.
  5. Now, starting with the Ones column, X out the number of ones you are subtracting. Write the number left at the bottom of the picture, and write the number under the Ones column on the vertical form.
  6. Repeat Step 5 for the Tens column, and then the Hundreds.
  7. You should now have the same number at the bottom of your chart as you do in the vertical form.
  8. Lastly– CHECK by Adding. You add the answer and the number you subtracted. The goal is to arrive back at the original number that you started with. Show your work. Students may choose the best strategy for the numbers they are adding – arrow way, number bond, or vertical form with chart.

If you arrived at the original number, you did it correctly! If not, try again.

Here is a video that I hope will help clarify the chip and chart method.

Book Fair Tomorrow

Our shopping day for the school’s Book Fair is tomorrow. This will be our only opportunity to shop. So if there are books that you want, don’t forget your money! Please note that you have to pay tax on all purchases so remember to send a little bit extra to cover the 6% State of Michigan sales tax. For example if a book is priced at $10, the amount due is $10.60.

Happy Reading!

Room 3’s Spelling Bee Champions

The winner’s of our classroom spelling bee have been determined! I want to congratulate all of the students. They took it seriously and gave 100% effort. It is very nerve-wracking to have to stand in front of everyone and spell out loud. Even very good spellers make mistakes when they get nervous.

I am proud of how everyone handled winning and losing graciously. Learning to win and lose is a life skill that we deal with almost everyday as adults. I have emphasized that in a contest there are only a few winners. More people lose than win in a contest. The most important thing is that they were prepared and that they did their personal best. Each contest or competition is different. The winners could be the losers, and the losers could be the winners. Please validate your child that even if they didn’t win, that they are still loved and worthy and “good.” Ask them what they could do different next time that might help them do better. If your child did win this round, praise them for their work and effort, but also prepare them for the fact that they might not win. Each level of competition is tougher than the last.

The winners of Mrs. Fowler’s Classroom Bee are:

  • Fatima Chami
  • Sirine Elachi
  • Azael Izaguirre-Cruz
  • Luke Mado
  • Samira Salame

Congratulations!

The 2nd Grade Spelling Bee is next Friday, March 16. The time and place will be announced early next week.
