New Books

Another batch of books has arrived! Here are my “must read” picks from this batch of books.

Dread Nation by Justina Ireland

Zombies + Civil War + Racial injustice= A must read for Me!

Space Opera by Catherynne M. Valente

All sentient species gather to compete in the Metagalactic Grand Prix, a grand tournament that determines which intelligent life forms get to survive. This year is Earth’s first competition, and they are sending the band Decibel Jones and the Absolute Zeros to determine the fate of human beings.

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

The main character discovers a giant transformer type statue, she makes a viral video about it naming the giant statue Carl. Things get weird when “Carls” show up in dozens of cities around the world. I love Hank Green’s videos, so I am hoping this book lives up to the hype!

And the Ocean was Our Sky by Patrick Ness

An illustrated retelling of Moby Dick…from the whales point of view.

Ofrenda in the Media Center

This year the Spanish Directed Study students created a Dia de los Muertos/DOfrendaay of the Dead Ofrenda in the Media Center.  The students decided to dedicate their Ofrenda to the Students and Staff from Stoneman Douglas High School that tragically lost their lives on February 14th, 2018.
The students that created the Ofrenda are in their 5th year of studying Spanish.  They have learned about Dia de los Muertos since Spanish 1.  In the upper levels they do a thorough investigation/study of the this holiday and its traditions.  They were excited to do this and are proud of their Ofrenda.
If you have time please stop by.
On Thursday and Friday (November 1-2) of this week there will be 2-3 students in the Media Center every hour to answer any questions.

Quotes for Media Center

Library wall

We have a blank space for some new inspiration! The long white space in the media center (pictured above) will be filled with inspirational quotes and words of wisdom, similar to the picture below. We need your help to find those quotes and words of wisdom.

Banned Books Week September 23-29

Libraries fight for the freedom to read books that represent all points of view, even unpopular ones. Books highlighted during the week have been banned or challenged in schools or libraries. The goal of the week is to bring attention to the problem of censorship. Check out the display of banned books in the school library. The challenged titles may surprise you!
