MWF LAHC and pumpkin carving

On Monday, the children learned about growing plants and were able to plant their own lettuce seeds. We are keeping watch over them in class until next week then we will send them home. Later, they voted on a jack-o-lantern face and helped scoop out the pumpkin “guts”. I took the seeds home and roasted them so the kids can try them during snack on Wednesday. We talked briefly about voting and how the thing with the most votes wins. I’m going to spend some more time on this next Monday as we just ran out of time this Monday!

MWF Applesauce

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry for the delay, I had accidentally added this post to my parent toddler blog as well as the field trip post.

First, I want to thank everyone who helped with our adult in distress Friday morning. A big thank you to Willow’s mom for taking calm control of the situation. The adult who fell is doing OK thanks to the quick response of everyone involved. Also, I understand some children were worried/ scared about the fall and emergency vehicles afterwards. Our school social worker came into our class to check on the kids and keep their attention on playing rather than trying to look out the window. If your child is still talking about it or worried it will happen again, please reassure them this is a very rare thing. It was a first for me! It would be a great opportunity to talk with your child about emergencies and how to dial 911.

As for the applesauce, the kids had a blast peeling (when it worked) and cutting the apples, but I think squishing was the most fun. Thank you to our parent volunteers who not only helped with the applesauce, but took all the wonderful pictures, and ran small group. We truly could not have done it without you!

MWF Class: Harvest Veggies

Wow, we had a super busy week! We had LAHC visit on Monday and they talked to the children about different types of fruit and veggies. They told them to eat all different colored fruits and veggies to stay healthy. Then we spent the rest of the week talking about fall veggies and learning the different names of squash and about how root veggies grow. The children tried out two different scales, a balance scale and a standard scale in pounds. We used rulers to measure how tall the different vegetables were. Mrs. Timpf, our principal, even stopped by the farmers market! The kids had a really great time buying and selling at the market. I told them on Friday that we didn’t want to waste all the veggies after playing, but that they had been touched by lots of hands and had been all over the floor, so I would take them home and cook them up to go into my pet birds’ food. So I’ve included a few pictures of Fanta eating squash for the kids to see. There are also pictures of the kids using hammers and nails on a pumpkin. Super fun!

TTH Class: Harvest Veggies

We had so much fun buying and selling veggies this week! Children learned about different types of onions, squash, and potatoes, they tried eating a radish (if they wanted to), and they used the balance scale to see which veggies were the heaviest. I told the kids that when we were done with the market for the week, I would take the veggies home and cook them for my pet birds because we didn’t want to waste the food (but we also didn’t want to eat it ourselves after many hands had touched them and they had been on the floor). I’ve included pictures of Fanta happily eating some squash. There are also some pictures of the kids creating their chalk drawings.

Picture Day Tomorrow!

Our official picture day time is 9:20 am. Please plan on arriving at our usual time (9:15) and I will walk everyone down to the photographers. TTH class, it is ok to arrive a few minutes later than 9:15 as I will put the MWF class ahead of you so they don’t miss a lot of class time. If all things go according to plan, our pictures should be finished by 9:40. Thanks so much and we look forward to seeing those beautiful smiles!
