Scholastic Book Order

Reminder:

Our December book order is due on December 6th so that it has time to arrive before we go on winter break.

This order has a lot of great deals and now is a great time to scoop some books at your child’s reading level. Take a look at the books which are coming home in your child’s book pouch and reference their level on Raz-kids. You can filter the search on the Scholastic website to match their reading level and purchase books at their individual reading level!

Thank you for helping to foster a love of reading in our classroom and at home!

Happy Thanksgiving!

No homework or book pouches this week! You may still utilize Raz-kids, Readingeggs, and Mathseeds.

Happy Thanksgiving

I am thankful for such a great group of children and their families!

I hope that you all enjoy this break with family and friends!

See you in December!

Reminder on outdoor recess and winter apparel:

The children will go outside for recess when the temperatures allow. It is very important that you have your child practice putting on and taking off their snow pants, snow boots, mittens/gloves, hats/ear muffs, scarves, etc. There is no way that we can help all of the students in the class zip, tie, on, off, etc and still have time to take them outside. Please help me by teaching your child how to independently put on and take off their winter apparel. Thank you for helping us make the most of our recess time!

Agenda for the Week

Reading & Writing:  This week I reassessed some of the children with their reading levels and changed their reading groups in class. I also went back in and adjusted their Raz-Kids reading levels as well. Some of the children are really picking up sight words and decoding and are growing rapidly with their reading skills. I try to continually make sure I am keeping up with their growth and updating their levels in order to provide them with instruction at their individual reading level. Thank you for your support at home!

Please continue to have your child practice writing sentences at home by pretending they are holding an imaginary rubberband and stretching it as they slowly say the word they are trying to spell.

List #3 will be assessed on 12/18. As a reminder the words are: find, from, but, this, came, on, will, into, be, your, that.

The blog post below gives more information about sight words lists and upcoming spelling tests as well as includes Jack Hartmann’s sight word videos for list #3:

All children are receiving one-on-one tutor time on the sight words using flash cards, magnetic letters, dry-erase white boards, and much more! If your child already knows the words on the list, we are working on having them write them! They have not truly mastered the word until they can read it and use it in their writing as well!

This week we worked on the letters Kk and Pp as well as the sounds these letters make. We learned how to write each letter and where each letter should be written on the line.

Please utilize RazKids, Readingeggs, and Mathseeds at home. These are all wonderful resources to progress your child’s skills. When your child first logs onto Readingeggs and Mathseeds, it will ask them to take an assessment. This assesses their skill set and places them at the lesson that is best suited for them. Some of your children may start on lesson one or some may start on lesson nine. I love these programs because they place the kids at their own learning level!

Math: We continue discussing 2D and 3D shapes. The children are using tangrams to familiarize themselves with shapes and to use shapes to build biggers shapes and pictures. The children also used geoboards to explore shapes.

Science: We continued talking about different types of weather and discussing the different seasons. The children have been playing with different puzzles which build scenes of each season.

Social Studies:  We continued discussing the difference between a need and a want and identifying which is which.

Indoor Lineup

Indoor lineup is now at the 5th grade doors. Remember, even during indoor lineup, no parents are allowed in the building unless you have signed in at the front office.

Winter Apparel

Please practice putting on and taking off coats, boots, shoes, scarves, gloves, etc. As well as buttoning/zipping coats and tying their own shoes. Your child should be able to do all of these things independently!

Folders

Please make sure to empty the folder each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Please be sure to send the folder to school each day. It is a big part of our arrival and dismissal routines and the folders help the children keep all of their papers organized

Sight Words List #3

List #3 of our sight word tests came home yesterday. This will be our last sight word list. The children will be assessed on Wednesday, December 18th before winter break. When we return after winter break, we will begin weekly spelling tests.

The words for list 3 are as follows: find, from, but, this, came, on, will, into, be, your, that.

These are a the only videos available for this list:

12/6 Scholastic Book Order Due (this way the books will be delivered before we leave for winter break!)

Agenda for the Week

Reading & Writing:  This week we concentrated on doing our best work to make our second star student book. We also began utilizing “daily fix it” sheets during Daily 5 to help us fix sentences and understand that they begin with an uppercase letter, end with a period, and the words need to be in order.

The children continue to grow during our small group time during Daily 5 reading groups! The children are doing well with print concepts, turning the pages, recognizing sight words, and even answer comprehension questions about the books.

Please continue to have your child practice writing sentences at home by pretending they are holding an imaginary rubberband and stretching it as they slowly say the word they are trying to spell. Next week we will begin learning how to write opinion pieces.

List #2 will be assessed on 11/20. As a reminder the words are: my, you, what, are, now, is, of, so, how, many, where.

All children are receiving one-on-one tutor time on the sight words using flash cards, magnetic letters, dry-erase white boards, and much more! If your child already knows the words on the list, we are working on having them write them! They have not truly mastered the word until they can read it and use it in their writing as well!

This week we worked on the letters Jj and Qq as well as the sounds these letters make.

I updated all of the children’s reading levels in Raz Kids so now when they log on the lessons will be tailored to their individual reading level!

Math: We began discussing 2D and 3D shapes. We used these two videos in class to support our learning:

Science: We continued talking about different types of weather and discussing the different seasons. The children learned how to make snowflakes!

Social Studies:  We continued discussing the difference between a need and a want and identifying which is which.

In order to build student confidence with taking off their coats, changing their shoes, and putting away their belongings, we ask that parents say your goodbyes at the door. Our support staff and student safeties will be on location to keep all students safe and to help them line up in the correct location. We thank you for your support and understanding 🙂

Agenda for the Week

Reading & Writing:  This week we began learning about opinion writing. The children learned that an opinion is something they think or feel and that their thoughts, likes, and feelings may be different from than others. The children practiced writing their opinion about which food they would take on a picnic with them and why. We learned that our why word is the word “because.” I am trying to get the children to extend their sentences by using the word because and telling why they prefer one thing to another.

Please continue to have your child practice writing sentences at home by pretending they are holding an imaginary rubberband and stretching it as they slowly say the word they are trying to spell. Next week we will begin learning how to write opinion pieces.
