100’s Day Project and Dressing Up

Dear Families –

The 100th day of school is a big deal in Kindergarten! We will do many activities that involve the number 100 and of course celebrate being 100 days smarter! Please help us celebrate by completing a 100th day project. This project can be ANYTHING that is a collection of 100 items. Over the years, I have seen this done many different ways – posters with 100 items glued to it, collections of items separated into baggies, etc. Important – please make sure to practice counting the objects with your child! The items on these projects should be grouped by 5’s or by 10’s. Your child will share and count their project with the class! These projects are due on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16th.

The children may also choose to dress up like an “old person.” Sometimes the children come with gray hair, glasses, suspenders, pearls, etc! I love seeing the children’s interpretations of what it looks like and feels like to be old!

Happy 100th Day!!!

News from the Jungle

**** No School for Kindergarten students Friday, February 2nd.

We have completed this round of NWEA testing. We will take the test again in the spring. Please continue to do NWEA practice with your child over the next few months. Not only is it good practice for the test, but these are skills that they will need to know for First grade. This website can help reinforce skills we are learning each day at school. Please find the Prepdog link below:

https://www.prepdog.org/

Coming soon on homework, the math story will include making a number bond. We also call this part, part, whole. For any of you that may not be familiar with this concept, here are a few videos in order to help you support your child’s learning at home:

If you need help on how to support your child in completing the homework packet, please refer to the homework packet instruction video. You can find this video at the top of our blog under the new tab called “How-To Videos.” This is where I will put any videos I have made for the class in order to make it easier to find the videos.

Agenda for the Week

Spelling Words for our next spelling test on 2/9:

me, on, do, she, cap, map, nap, tap, clap,

Plus a bonus word which will be one of the following words: snap, flap, slap, gap, rap, zap

The purpose of the bonus word is to assess whether the children understand the word family pattern of each word ending in the same two letters -ap.

These words will be in the homework which will come home on Monday!

Please remember the spelling booklet will come home on the Monday after the children take the test and will be expected to be reviewed, signed, and returned to school on Tuesday. This will be the protocol for the test booklets each week. At the end of the year, the test booklets will be sent home for you to keep.

Reading and Writing: This week was a quick week. We continue to practice writing sentences which include uppercase letters to start the sentence, finger spaces between words, and periods at the end of the sentence. We have also been reviewing nouns, verbs, and adjectives and are trying to include those in our writing. We learned about our work on writing journals and began using those during Daily 5. The children choose their own topic and write about it. This is a great time for them to explore writing about a topic they like and try adding details to it to make it at least two sentences long.

Math: The children took their +5 math test today! Next week, we will focus on learning +6 math facts. Our test will be on Friday, February  9th.

6+ 0 = __     6 + 5 = __   6 + 10=__

6 + 1 = __    6 + 6 = __

6 + 2 = __    6 + 7 = __

6 + 3 = __    6 + 8 = __

6 + 4 = __    6 + 9 = __

The scope of our math curriculum for the rest of the year will be addition, subtraction, and greater than or less than concepts.

The children continued learning about base 10 blocks and how to count tens and ones to make a number. For example one bunch of 10 and 2 ones makes 12. We included many base 10 activities in our math centers this week.

Here are some addition, subtraction, and greater than/less than videos to support your child’s learning:

Here are some addition videos:

Science: We continued learning about polar habitats! We completed a few more cut and glue activities to label body parts on polar animals and learned facts about the animals. Next week we will learn about penguins and try using our informational blueprint to write an informative piece of writing.

The blueprint teaches them about the topic of the paper, topic sentence, three facts, and a summary sentence. We came up with the sentences together and completed this activity whole group. Timeline Projects

We shared our timeline projects today and the children had so much fun talking about their lives and sharing pictures from when they were babies!

Thank you for working on this with your child! I hope you had fun talking with your child about their five or six years of life! We had fun learning about each other!

Here are pictures of the children sharing their posters:

How Do Arctic Animals Stay Warm?

We have been learning about the polar climate and the animals that live there. We know that the arctic is a cold climate and we were wondering how the animals stay warm.

We learned that some of the animals have a layer of blubber underneath their skin. The blubber helps to keep the animals warm in the cold temperatures.

We participated in an experiment to better understand how blubber keeps the animals warm. First, we stuck our hands in a bucket of ice cold water. Then we put on a “blubber glove” to see the difference it would make in how the ice water felt.

The blubber glove was made using baggies and shortening.

Here are pictures from this activity:

We all had a great time of learning and exploring how blubber keeps arctic animals warm!
