March is Reading Month

March is Reading Month!  The theme this year is Paws for Reading!

There will be many opportunities for the children to participate in different reading activities and to celebrate reading month! We will have a spirit week, a Rockin’ Read-a-thon, classroom readers and more!

Look for a packet describing the upcoming events and activities. Please keep this packet in a safe place as it contains the reading log for the month. If your child turns in the reading log by Wednesday, April 11th, they will earn a special prize.

I will have fifteen dates available for those of you who wish to come in to read to the class. Spots are limited and it will be on a first come, first serve basis.  The time slot for reading to the class will begin at 3:00pm. You may choose a book from your child’s book collection at home, or I can provide you with a book to read. If you would like to sign up for a day to read, please see me at dismissal tomorrow or Friday. You may also email me with a date and I will let you know if it is available.

The following dates are NOT available:

March 1, 7, 8, 14, 21, 28, 30

Thank you!

News from the Jungle

** I kept the green home folders. Do not panic if you look in your child’s backpack and do not see their folder! I kept them for break and will pass them back out on Monday, February 26th.**

This was such a busy week. I was out sick on Monday and had training all day on Wednesday. Add in our Valentine’s party and the 100th day of school and it was gone in a flash.

I hope everyone will enjoy this mid-winter break. If you are traveling, I wish you safe travels. There is no homework packet during this break; however, please put your child on readingeggs, mathseeds, and the NWEA prep website. Also, continue reading and writing with your child each night and practicing sight words.

Thank you for your support at home! I truly believe that when we work together, we help the children to be the most successful learners they can be! I appreciate all that you do at home with your children!

The art teacher, Mrs. Buenting is doing a fundraiser called “Art to Remember.” A note came home today about this opportunity to buy your child’s art on merchandise. More information is below:

Attention Parents!

School Fundraiser Information: This semester, our school is participating in a unique fundraising program with Art to Remember that gives you the opportunity to purchase keepsake items with your child’s artwork on them. The best part is that every keepsake order supports our school.

Order forms for Art to Remember will be sent home with students on 3/2/18 and are due back by 3/13/18. To see available keepsake items like coffee mugs, key chains, and necklaces,visit https://arttoremember.com/fundraising-p…/keepsake-programs/…/

100th Day of School Tomorrow!!!!

Please remember to send your child to school with their 100th day project tomorrow. Your child may also choose to dress up like an old person tomorrow. Some years, children have chosen to wear suspenders, glasses, spray their hair gray/white, and draw wrinkles on their faces. Your child does not need to dress up. This is optional.

We will celebrate the 100th day by participating in activities which make us work with the number 100 either by building structures with 100 blocks/cups or doing 100 exercises.

Have fun with the 100 day projects! Remember to have your child practice counting their items. Items should be grouped by 5s or by 10s. The children will share their posters with the class tomorrow and count for everyone.

Thank you for helping your child participate in the 100th day of school!

The scope of our math curriculum for the rest of the year will be addition, subtraction, and greater than or less than concepts.

The children continued learning about base 10 blocks and how to count tens and ones to make a number. For example one bunch of 10 and 2 ones makes 12. We included many base 10 activities in our math centers this week and we played base ten bingo as a class.

The children also learned how to play a game called around the world where they verse each other in identifying shapes, or finding sums to addition equations. This game can be used for many skills and is a fun way for the children to practice material they are learning throughout the day.

Here are some addition, subtraction, and greater than/less than videos to support your child’s learning:

Here are some addition videos:

Science: We continued learning about polar habitats! We completed a few more cut and glue activities to label body parts on polar animals and learned facts about the penguins.

Social Studies: We began talking about maps and landforms this week. The children are very interested in following directions on maps, identifying landforms, and loved learning about a compass. We have been discussing buildings, people, and jobs which we see in our community and have been coloring pictures of buildings and community jobs. These drawings will be used next week to create a huge map of a made up city from your child’s imagination. This activity will be completed with our fourth grade buddies from Mrs. Izbicki’s class.

Housekeeping Items:

Spelling booklets: Please be sure to return these promptly on Tuesday!

Snack Time

**** Due to a peanut allergy in our room, please do not send in any snacks that contain nuts.*****

Folders

Please make sure to empty the green folders each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Remember to initial the communication log and feel free to add any notes to me!

Valentine Information

Dear Families,

We will have a Valentine’s Day party on Tuesday, February 13th. We will run this party just like all the rest of the parties. We will have centers of crafts and games for the children to enjoy.

We also will have time in the day to pass out Valentine cards. This is not mandatory. If you choose to pass out Valentine cards, here are a few things to know:

  1. We have 24 students in our class. Please make sure you have a Valentine card for each student.
  2. Please only write your child’s name on the card. It is too hard for them to try and read each child’s name and then it doubles the amount of time it takes to pass out the cards. Leave blank the “To:____________” and have your child write their name in the “From: _____________” spot.
  3. We will decorate bags in class for the valentine cards. You do not need to make anything at home.

Please email me with questions!
