We will submit one final book order before the end of the year. Book orders are due on May 23rd. This is a great opportunity to get some books for your child to keep their reading going throughout the summer!
If you are interested in knowing your child’s current reading level, I will be assessing all the children and will be happy to share that information with you so you can order them books are their reading level.

We are a NUT FREE room. We continue to get snacks containing nuts. Children may not have any kinds of nuts or peanut butter in our classroom. Eating these at lunch is fine, but having them for snack is not allowed. Please help me by sending a nut free snack to school with your child.

Reading and Writing: We continue working on using all of the skills we have learned to help us to become better readers and writers. Please practice sight words with your children at home. Your child should also be practicing writing by coming up with a sentence and writing down the sounds they hear in each word. Remind them to use spaces between their words.
Math: We have been working with a rekenrek and counting by 10’s. We have focused on counting on from any given number and have been practicing writing our numbers 0 – 100.
Science: We continue to learn about ocean animals and how they depend on their habitats! This week we learned more about ocean zones and the animals which live in each zone. We will continue to focus on ocean animals for the rest of the year!
Social Studies: We continue discussing democracy! We took a poll in class and casted votes on our favorite snack. Then we graphed our results. We did all of this after we came to an “informed” opinion about each snack to determine which one is the best.

We are a NUT FREE room. We have children with nut allergies in our room and therefore all snacks may not contain any nuts! You may send your child with a lunch that contains nuts because the children with allergies sit at a different table, however, in our classroom, we need to remain nut free. Reading and Writing: We continue working on compound words this week. The children are still really excited about compound words. In writing we have been working on using our spelling words and including nouns, verbs, adjectives, and telling where everything is happening. The children continue to use letter sounds to stretch out words and listen for the sounds the letters make. We are trying to spell more complex words and utilize skills we have learned such as letter blends (bl, cr, gr, tr, dr, sl, etc) and “the H brothers (ch, th, wh, sh).
Math: We have been working on the words increase and decrease and talking about a group of ten and one more or one less. The children are having an easier time with 10 plus a number and having a little bit harder time with subtraction. We have also still been working on comparing numbers 11 – 20 and using symbols greater than, less than, and equal to. We have been working on understanding that numbers in the teens start with a one and that if we reverse the numbers it makes a total different number. Please continue to practice addition and subtraction with your child at home, as well as writing numbers to 100, counting by 5s, 10s, and 2s (if they can), and finding a group of ten and then counting up from there.
Science: We are learning about the earth and how to recycle! We are also beginning to learn about ocean animals and how they depend on their habitats! This week we began learning about the ocean zones and completed a craft in order for the children to understand which animals live in which zones.
Social Studies: We began discussing democracy and made voter registration cards! We will take a few polls in class and cast votes on our favorite snack and favorite animals next week.

I hope you all enjoy your spring break! Safe travels to all those traveling during the break! I will be enjoying my time at home with Stella and do not plan on doing much of anything except snuggling that baby!
With the weather becoming warmer, the ground is soft and muddy. Many of the children fall during recess and end up with muddy, dirty pants. Please put an extra pair of pants in their backpacks for this time of year so that we can easily have them change at school and will not need to call home and have you bring a change of clothes for them! Reading and Writing: We continue to work on our reading comprehension, decoding words, and our writing. I am stressing to the children that they need to be using lowercase letters in their writing. Many of the children use uppercase letters randomly throughout their writing. I am trying to teach them that they need only use uppercase at the beginning of a sentence, for names of people or places, and when I stands alone. We continue to learn digraphs (sh, ch, wh, th, ph). We review er at the end of a word when we hear the errrrr sound and ar in a word when we hear arrrrrrr like a pirate.
Math: We continue learning subtraction. The children are sometimes confused between addition and subtraction. We are working on understanding that when we add we are putting numbers together and the overall number gets bigger. We are learning that when we subtract we are taking away and the overall number represents how many are left and is smaller.
Science: We did an engineering project where we had to build a habitat for a superhero. The children worked together in teams to build a house for their superhero. They had to use their building supplies and make sure that their superhero fit inside of their house. The children really had a lot of fun problem solving and working together to accomplish this task.
Social Studies: We will finish our giant city maps when we return from break! The children have been enjoying learning about maps, creating maps, and following directions on maps!

Reading and Writing: We really worked on our writing this week and focused on using a noun, verb, adjective, and even tried to include the setting (where the story takes place). I modeled for the children taking two animals and combining them together. They really enjoyed this concept. For example, in class, I combined a monkey and a lion together and called it a lonkey. I drew a picture of what this animal might look like and wrote a sentence like this, “The silly lonkey is throwing bananas at people in the zoo.” Many of the children chose to combine two different superheroes together to create new super powers and with many of the students a kitty-corn was very popular, that is a unicorn combined with a kitten. It looked like a kitten with a unicorn horn! This was a fun way to get the children excited about writing!
We continue learning about digraphs. We have worked on Ch, Sh, Th, and touched a little bit on Wh. The children are trying to use these new skills in their writing to help them spell more words.

Money needs to be in an envelope with your child’s name and state for what the money should be used.
Folders
Please make sure to empty the folder each night! It is very difficult and time consuming to locate homework or important notes when the folder is full of papers from the day before. Please be sure to send the folder to school each day. It is a big part of our arrival and dismissal routines and the folders help the children keep all of their papers organized.
Change of clothes
Please send in a change of clothes (pants, shirt, underwear, socks) in a gallon bag with their name clearly written on the baggie. My most frequent call home is to ask for parents to bring a change of clothes to school. Even the most disciplined children have accidents at school sometimes. We have so much fun during the day that sometimes the children do not want to stop to use the bathroom when needed. Not only do bathroom accidents happen, but sometimes the playground equipment is wet or the ground is muddy. Having a change of clothes at school makes it easy for me and for you to help your child feel clean and comfortable in the quickest way possible. We will leave the baggie of clothes in their locker at school.
There are 3 ways to enjoy the Haigh Book Fair this week:
1) Your student may purchase a book during our class visit. Please send money to school with you child, in an envelope, labeled with your child’s name.
2) You may shop with your student during our scheduled class visit. Please sign in at the office and meet us in the media center.
3) Family Night will be on Wednesday, March 20th. The book fair will be open from 3:35-7:00pm for after school shopping.
Our class will attend the book fair on Tuesday, March 19th at 2:00 pm.
On Fridays we will wear our class shirts and jeans for the rest of the year if your child would like to participate with us! This upcoming friday is wear green day, so we will not wear green this coming Friday.

Monday is Pajama day! No slippers please!
Tuesday is Twin Day! We will wear our class shirts and jeans on Twin Day if your child wants to participate in that with us!

Reading and Writing: We really worked on our writing this week and focused on stretching words to listen for the sounds each letter is making in the word. We worked on vowel sounds this week in order to help us identify the middle sound of words. We played games in small groups to help us learn the sounds of a, e, i, o, u.
We learned about digraphs. This week we focused on sh. Next week we will focus on more of the “h brothers.” We were introduced to ch, th, wh, and ph and practice the sounds they make.
Math: We began discussing subtraction. We learned about the subtraction symbol or minus sign and practiced “taking away” by solving story problems. The children also enjoyed this video about subtraction:

Between the book fair money, popcorn money, the read-a-thon money, school store money, and children just plain bringing money to buy snacks at lunch….. I have no idea how all this money is supposed to be used, if it is not labeled. There is a pile of dollars and five dollars that the children threw on my desk and I do not know to whom they belong as they are not inside a baggie or envelope labeled with a name and for which activity it is to be used.
Please speak with your child about what the money is for because they always ask me what their money is to be used for and unless it is labeled, I do not know what to tell them.
Help me and your child by having their money inside a baggie or envelope, labeled with their name, and the purpose of the money. Also, talk with your child about what the money is to be used for so that they understand if they should turn it in, or if they should keep it and use it for lunchtime snacks or the school store.
Happy Friday! This is my second week back and we are all happy to be back together again! The children have been so sweet to always ask about Stella and how she is doing! We have had Playworks come into our room and teach us a few different games to help us have fun during our indoor recesses and give us activities to do during the school day when we need a little break! The children loved learning and playing these new games!

Reading and Writing: We learned that sometimes two letters together make one sound. This week we practiced ar says R, like a pirate. See the video below and the pictures of the pirate hats we made in order to learn this letter/sound combination:
