Summer Homework

Please refer to my “how-to” videos on our classroom blog for ideas on how to help maintain your child’s skill set throughout the summer.

Reading & Writing                                                                                  Please continue to read with your child each night. Below are a few questions to ask your child to promote comprehension after reading each story:

  • What was your favorite part of the story? Why?
  • Did this story make you think of anything in your life?
  • Retell the story. What happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?

Practice reading and writing the list of spelling words from the year. Here is a list of words for your child to practice:

I               A             the          rat           sat           cat           bat          can          man        tan          pan         see          you         by           she

wet         get           set           bet          is             in            pig          wig         jig            fig           to            like         hop         come      do

mop        pop         it             run          fun          sun         he            for           at             cap          tap          map        rap          here        play

my          we           pen         hen         men        den         go            up           sit           fit            pit           look        me          has          mom

pot          got          not          hot          are          of            bug         rug          jug           tug          and         be            where     little       thing

lip           sip          hip          dip          dog         log          hog         bog         tub          rub          cub         first        next        last         favorite

Fun ways to work on spelling these words are as follows:

  • Cut letters out of magazines and glue them on a piece of paper to make the word
  • Rainbow writing (using a different color to write each letter of the word)
  • Make the letters with Play Doh
  • Buy a beach ball and write the words on the ball – then play catch and whatever word your child’s thumb lands on is the word they have to read and spell

Math

  • Work on the math addition fact flash cards that are attached to this packet. Also review all the ones previously sent home.
  • Work on Subtraction (We call subtraction “take-away”)
    • Give your child crackers and make up a subtraction story problem. For example: You have 5 crackers. You eat two crackers (have child eat the crackers). How many crackers are left? Have the child count how many crackers are left. They should say, “There are 3 crackers left.”
  • Review money. Have your child tell you the name of each coin and how much it is worth.
