Student Updates and Thursday Fun!

It was so wonderful to be able to chat with Yahya and his family, today! Special thank you to Mrs. Fournier, Ms. Harden, Ms. Dudek, and Mr. Borg for dropping in to say hello to Yahya! We hope you can join us next week for more special guests to stop by! We all missed you, buddy!

Belal has also been hard at work these past few weeks at home with mom! He is helping mom in a big way with the household chores! Belal has been enjoying crafts, exercising, singing and dancing to music, and being outdoors as often as possible!

I’m happy to see that you two and your families are making the best out of this situation while we are staying home!

Families please be sure to check these links below to see what Mr. Borg, Ms. Dudek, and Ms. Harden have planned for their classes as well! See you next week!

Love,

Ms. Diana

Belal vacuuming the carpet for mom! What a wonderful helper!
Making sure we clean up after ourselves!
Missing the sunny days….can’t wait to be outside again 🙂

Happy Monday! I hope that everyone is doing well and that all of our mother’s had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend with their loved ones! This week, I will be hosting a Google Hangouts Meet for students on Thursday at 2pm. This will give a chance for students to see and talk to their friends! (Hopefully, with no technical difficulties) Please be on the lookout for an email on this soon.

Also, I know that getting packets from the mail hasn’t been reliable. Beginning next week, the transportation department will be delivering packets to students homes on Monday’s to ensure they are received on time. I hope that everyone has a great week and I look forward to seeing you soon!

This weeks daily living skill is washing the laundry. Remember, there are many skills to practice when completing this chore. Placing dirty laundry in a basket, sorting the laundry, carrying the basket to the laundry room, putting the clothes in the washer, adding detergent, turning on the washer are all skills needed to complete this task. It’s ok if some of the skills are not accessible to you at this time, the most important part of teaching a new skill is engaging in the activity as much as possible. This will lead to greater independence.

Dear Families, It was so great to connect with some of you last week. I encourage you to contact me at anytime. I look forward to hearing from you! Unfortunately, with the US Mail delays many of you have not received your packet of materials from the previous week. I apologize for this inconvenience. Packets for this weeks topics were mailed last Wednesday, but I fear they may be delayed as well.

Our Daily Living Skill for the week is TAKING OUT THE TRASH. Read through the attached PDF with your family and then practice taking out the trash from the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom. Remember, even if your young adult is not ready for the entire task they can still be engaged in the process. Maybe they can retrieve a new trash bag and open it, put garbage in the trash can for you, open the door while you take it to the outside can, wheel the outside can to the street or even retrieve it. Lifting heavy things or pushing heavy objects is one way to stimulate your bodies vestibular system. This sensory input can be calming and help with attention.

The recipe of the week is a grilled cheese sandwich. In our class, we have made grilled cheese several different ways including using a griddle, stovetop and a sandwich press. Everyone seems to enjoy a grilled cheese!
