Today we got to visit with Hector, the lizard. We thought he was really cool! Thank you Ms. Beaver for bringing him in!
Week of 4/9
Hope everyone had a restful break!
M-STEP starts tomorrow for 5th Grade!! Tuesday we will be tested on Science and Wednesday we will be tested on Social Studies. Please make sure that you child is getting lots of rest and eating a healthy breakfast before school those days.
ZOO FIELD TRIP will be on Friday, April 27th. If you are interested in chaperoning on the field trip, please make sure that you have all of the necessary paperwork filled out in the office as soon as possible. We need at least 4 to 5 chaperones for our class to attend. Thank you in advance!
ELA
- Spelling words for this week are:
flame rebel production consumption genetic divide variable admiration criminal televise admire produce dividend flammable gene television crime consume irony rebellion - We will be focusing on writing an essay, called a Text Dependent Analysis, that will be done on the M-Step next week. Students need to practice their analyzing skills to be able to write an essay using information that they have read from a text.
Math
- We are beginning unit 9 on coordinate planes, area, perimeter, and volume.
- Today we took the pretest and this week we will begin working on coordinate planes with positive and negative numbers.
Social Studies
- We began talking about the French and Indian War today.
- We will continue to discuss all of the events that led up to the American Revolution.
Science
- We will begin our new unit in science about food chains and food webs later this week.

March is Reading Month
Week of February 26th
I hope you all enjoyed your mid-winter break! We are going to be preparing for M-Step the next few weeks before spring break. Please have your child log in to Khan Academy as often as possible to practice at home.
This week starts March is Reading Month! Calendars will be going home and I will post it on the blog on Thursday.
ELA
- Spelling words this week are: ambiguous, authority, volume, area, aerospace, massacre, fort, aerobics, proclamation, ambiance, length, allies, width, repeal, ambition, boycott, perimeter, intolerable, aerosol, import
- We finished Wonder before break and we are working on activities like character snapshots, what it means to be ordinary, struggles characters had throughout the book, and finally we will compare and contrast the book to the movie.
- We will also be working on prefix and suffixes.
- We are writing a research paper on a person from the American Revolution. Students will be presenting on their person late next week.
Math
- We are working on scientific notation, standard notation, and exponential notation.
- We will continue to work on parentheses and order of operations this week.
Science
- We are going to be reviewing the water cycle and how to make it rain.
- We will be reviewing for a summative assessment.
- The summative assessment will be early next week.
Social Studies
- We talked about the southern colonies and how they were formed to build the 13 colonies before the American Revolution.
- Later this week we will be discussing the middle and New England colonies and how they were formed.

Sorry for the late post, it has been a busy week!
Monday we had our PBIS skating field trip! The students had a great time and were complimented by the staff at the skating rink on their behavior and willingness to help others.
Here is what is happening this week:
ELA
- Spelling words for the week: analysis, nuclei, vertex, shelf, hypotheses, oxen, analyses, syllabus, hypothesis, ox, nucleus, vertices, loaves, dice, appendices, shelves, appendix, syllabi, loaf, die.
- We are finishing read “Wonder” and we hope to watch the movie next week and compare the similarities and differences.
- Compound words and irregular plurals are the focus for grammar.
- We are continuing to work on our research project on a person of the American Revolution, and we will be presenting when we return from break.
Math
- Math tests will be coming tomorrow.
- We are going to begin Unit 7 for math on exponential notation, scientific notation, and line graphs.
Science
- We are going to finish our unit on the Watery Planet.
- We are exploring how to save towns from a hurricane and why flooding occurs.
- We are also going to try and create rain.
Social Studies
- We are continuing our discussion about Jamestown.
- We will also review the southern colonies and why they were created.
