Word of the Week = I

Enjoy listening to the following songs and stories with your child. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Listen to a video all the way through without interruption. Demonstrate for your child how to point to ‘I’ on a core vocabulary communication board each time you hear the word in a song or story.
  2. Play the video a second time and continue to point to ‘I’ when you hear it. Pause the video periodically to give your child time to look at or to point to the ‘I’ picture symbol.
  3. Try slowing down the video speed to see if it helps your child follow along and respond. There is a settings icon at the bottom of all youtube videos that allows you to adjust the playback speed, try 0.75. You want to find a speed that gives your child more time to mentally process the language but at the same time still makes the video sound fun and engaging.
  4. Try listening to at least 1 song and 1 book each day.
  5. Have fun! If you’re enjoying the activity, your child will too!

You can send them to me at huntd@dearbornschools.org. Thank you! We appreciate everyone’s participation and look forward to seeing you all soon!

We enjoyed seeing those who participated in the hangouts last week! If you weren’t able to join us, had trouble logging in or did not receive an invitation link the day of the meeting I sincerely apologize. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the challenges of providing online learning. Please email (huntd@dearbornschools.org), call or text me (734-623-9101, google voice phone number) to resolve any issues that you have encountered. Also, if your child is not able to join us for a scheduled hangout, please reach out to me and I would be happy to schedule an individual session at a time of your convenience. Thank you!

Word of the Week = MORE

Our word of the week is MORE. Give your child many opportunities throughout the day to request MORE while playing or eating. Children tend to be motivated to communicate their wants during fun, playful activities that they find rewarding. Your child may communicate his or her wants through a combination of facial expressions, eye gaze, body movements, gestures, sounds, or words. When your child does or says something that you interpret as a request for MORE, you can comment “MORE” or “I want MORE” and pair it with a MORE picture symbol to reinforce your child’s intentional communication. Please see the following examples…

  • TOYS: If your child enjoy’s stacking blocks, only give her a few blocks at a time. If, for example, she uses eye gaze to communicate, when she looks back and forth from the blocks to you, give her a few MORE blocks, say “MORE” and point to the MORE symbol on the communication board.
  • ACTIVITIES: If your child enjoy’s throwing a ball and watching you retrieve it, pause before giving the ball back to him. If, for example, he uses vocalizations to communicate and says “ma”, give the ball back to him, say “MORE”, “MORE ball” or “I want MORE ball” and point to the MORE symbol on the communication board.
  • FOOD: During snacks or meals only give your child a small amount of food or drink at a time. If, for example, she uses gestures to communicate and points to a bag of crackers when she finishes her bite, give her a few more crackers, say “MORE” and point to the MORE symbol on the communication board.

I want MORE books and song!

This week I am modeling the use of 2 picture symbols for choice making as well as combining core vocabulary words to make sentences.

Word of the Week = WANT

Story #1 WANT

This week I am modeling how to combine words using picture symbols on a core vocabulary communication board during book reading. I encourage you to point to the words on your child’s core board at home while I read.

Throughout the week point to the word ‘WANT’ on the core board as you comment on what you think your child’s behavior is telling you. For example: “You crawled to the door, it looks like you WANT to go outside.” “You’re banging your cup, it sounds like you WANT more water.” “You’re clapping your hands, it looks like you WANT to hear more music.”

If your child can independently point to WANT, add 1 or 2 words to expand their utterance such as “I WANT”, “WANT MORE”, “WANT EAT”, or “I WANT GO”. Point to the picture symbols as you say the words.
