Word of the Week = WANT

Posted by on April 14, 2020
Story #1 WANT

This week I am modeling how to combine words using picture symbols on a core vocabulary communication board during book reading. I encourage you to point to the words on your child’s core board at home while I read.

Throughout the week point to the word ‘WANT’ on the core board as you comment on what you think your child’s behavior is telling you. For example: “You crawled to the door, it looks like you WANT to go outside.” “You’re banging your cup, it sounds like you WANT more water.” “You’re clapping your hands, it looks like you WANT to hear more music.”

If your child can independently point to WANT, add 1 or 2 words to expand their utterance such as “I WANT”, “WANT MORE”, “WANT EAT”, or “I WANT GO”. Point to the picture symbols as you say the words.
