Hi Families! A great way to teach and reinforce language concepts is by using targeted vocabulary in songs and books. At school we incorporate core vocabulary into activities by pointing to the words that we say on core vocabulary communication boards, by presenting words individually and by combining 2 or 3 words to make short phrases and sentences. You can reinforce these words at home by pointing to words on a core board as you say them or when you hear them in songs or books. We need to model words MANY times before we expect our kids to independently point to picture symbols to express themselves. We talk to babies for months and months before we expect them to talk back to us. In the same way, we may need to use the language of picture symbols for months or years before we expect our kids to point to and/or say the words themselves. We do this through modeling, which simply means that we point to the words as we say them.
This week, focus on modeling the word “GO” to your child. Point to the picture symbol on a core board or make your own picture symbol to point to when you hear the word “GO” in songs and books. Also, as you naturally say “GO” in conversation, point to the picture symbol when you say the word. For example, “GO play”, “GO to the bathroom”, “GO outside”, “GO to bed”. Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process and more than likely your child will too!
