Outsiders Quilt Project-RANDOM CHECK

About two weeks ago students were given a project for the Outsiders book (see previous post for more information). It is work that has been ongoing throughout the text and will be due Monday, JUNE 4th. Students should be carrying around a folded up piece of construction paper and working on it this weekend, as I am doing a random check for 25 points next week. Because we have completed reading 8 of the 12 chapters, students should be, at least, halfway done with this project by now.

Students have been warned that this task is NOT something they can put off until the last minute. This will count as 50 summative (test) points.

Let me now if you have any questions.

4th CM Progress Reports

On Tuesday, May 15th, all students received a progress report for Language Arts. This report includes their current grade, as well as information on missing assignments (if applicable).

This progress report should have been viewed and signed by a parent and returned to me today. Many students did not have this to turn in to me today.

Please ask them to see it, and sign it.

Let me know if you have any questions.

“Outsiders” Quilt Project

On Wednesday, May 9th, all students received the attached rubric and information about this project. They have approximately 3 weeks to complete this project. A final due date will be posted as we get close to the finishing the book.

This assignment is worth 50 SUMMATIVE points and it will have a great impact on their final grade for the card-marking. This project is not difficult, but is is time consuming. To do a thorough job and complete this to the given expectations, students will have to work on it as we read. They cannot put it off until the last night and expect to get it done.

Finally, this project MUST be completed on the 12X18 piece of construction paper they were given in class. If they lose this paper they can buy a new one at a store, or I will sell them one for $1. Poster board or computer paper are not viable substitutes for the construction paper.

Let me know if there are any questions.

One Person Can Make a Difference Assignment

This is a reminder that all students have until Monday, May 7th at 8am to complete a google slide show presentation about two people who have made a difference in their community, or in someone’s life.
This was assigned on Tuesday, May 1st. The assignment details can be found in google classroom and the task is due whether students attend school, or not, on Monday.
Please see google classroom for details and email me with any questions.

Homework Reminder

All students, including those who did not have class with me today (due to testing), are still responsible for the homework assignment given and posted yesterday.
I made several announcements today, including once in the cafeteria and once over the school PA system to have them see me before they left school to get their papers and/or ask questions.

Please read assignment directions and let me know if there are any questions.

“I Escaped a Violent Gang” HW

On Friday all students received a piece of informational text. They were to read and annotate, completing it according to the classroom annotation directions (these were given to all students in the fall, they were told to keep them, and have been used throughout the school year). Many student did not do this correctly and will have tonight to make any necessary changes.
This item is worth 25 formative points.

Today students had to use their completed paper from above to create a foldable in class. This is something that would be difficult, but not impossible to do without having done Friday’s work. This item must be completed according to the given directions, as well.
This item is worth 25 summative points and will not be accepted unless the above work has been completed according to the given directions and turned in at the same time.

Both papers have been attached for those who were not in class, or who lost them.

Both items must be turned in the start of class tomorrow. Students who do not have class with me tomorrow, due to the testing schedule, will turn in both items on Wednesday.

Moby Max Homework

Last week all students were assigned to do 120 minutes (2 hours) of Moby Max LANGUAGE for homework. This is due before 8 am tomorrow morning. As of today, less than half of the students have even started this assignment.

As it is highly likely to become a summative grade, for this card-marking, students have been reminded repeatedly, both in writing and verbally, to get this work done.

Please email me with any questions that you may have.

End of Card-Marking Obligations

This is just friendly reminder that the end of the card-marking is next week, Thursday, March 29th, 2018.

As a part of their SSR obligations, all students are required to turn in TWO Exit Tickets (one for each of the books they completed this card-marking), complete TWO entries in their book timeline, as well as a Literary Letter by TOMORROW, Friday, March 23rd.

They know what these items are. They have been given directions for each, both in writing and discussions in class. The Literary Letter is summative points and will count as a zero on a test if not turned in.

All students should have the materials necessary to complete these tasks, in their binders, or in their LA composition books.
They have had weeks to work on these, as well as multiple reminders of the due date. If they forget to bring home their materials, they will need to solve their problem by contacting a friend or referring back to previous blog posts.

Also, tomorrow is the deadline for any student who wants to turn in late work.

If a student is absent tomorrow, for ANY reason all items listed above must be turned in to the office by the end of the day. No work will be accepted after tomorrow.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Student Supplies

As the school year progresses, more and more students are arriving to class without the proper materials or supplies.
This post is a reminder to all as to the expectations for both.

All students must come to class EVERY DAY with a reading book and their Language Arts binder. They also need to have their composition book on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (this can be left in the classroom). They also need to have paper and pencil or pen, EVERY DAY. Having these items is not optional. Many students are forced to return to their locker, to get these materials, making them tardy to class.

Some days they will also need to have additional materials, such as their textbook or their multi color highlighters.

I often have some extra paper, or pencils (to borrow), but my supplies are quickly dwindling with the amount of students who are relying on them instead of bringing their own. Please, if possible, talk to your student about this problem and see if they need any supplies replenished to get them through the school year.

Thank you for your support.
