Kindergarten Online Learning

Parents,

Here is all the information you will need to work with your child at home over the next few weeks. My dojo will be active and I can answer any questions you may have! If you are working on something and need assistance, I can help via pictures and I can always call you if need be. The entire class knows how to log into their reading eggs, raz kids, and math seeds on their own if you can just get them on the webpage.

Spelling test and lists will be pushed back and will resume in April when we return. In the meantime, please continue working on sight words. We have attached the sight word lists for Kindergarten that need to be mastered before the end of the year.

  • An easy way to practice these words is by writing out flash cards. We recommend you try the 6:4 method (6 words they know and 4 words they do not know) when reviewing. Practice the set of 10 words until they have mastered words and then bring in new words 4 new words and removed 4 they have mastered.
  • Alphabet Chart
  • Sight Word Lists ** They need to know these by the end of Kindergarten! (Young 5, focus on the pre-primer list to prepare them for Kinder!)

Reading

  • Please use Raz-Kids and reading eggs to work with your child on maintaining and improving their reading skills. I will be monitoring the online programing from home, please email if you have any questions. Students should listen to the book, read the book, and take the quiz for each book before moving on to the next story or book. My recommendation would be at least 3 books a day (following the listen, read, and quiz pattern) and 20-30 minutes on reading eggs.
    • Raz Kids
    • Reading Eggs
    • You will need the teacher username for raz-kids, these are posted on individual teacher’s blog but we have also listed them here:
      • dvensko
      • Chammout
      • mdimitriou
      • afillmore1
  • If you are not using online resources (raz-kids), we have attached comprehension pages for you to do with hard copy of books – 1 per day (15 total).
  • Please continue to do the fun activities on the March is Reading Month Log. Don’t forget to log your minutes!

Writing

  • Attached is a template to use each day- 15 total. Students should pick a topic of their choice and write at least 3 complete sentences (Kindergarten) to match the picture they draw.

Math

  • Here are the math lessons that should be completed in your child’s Eureka Math Succeed Book.
    • Week of March 16th: Module 4 Lessons 31-36
    • Week of March 23rd: Module 4 Lessons 37-40
    • Week of March 30th: Module 5 Lessons 1-6
  • This is a link to a youtube playlist that has the lessons online for your child to watch. On the right side of the video is the playlist where you can select the appropriate lesson. Module 4 Lessons 31-40

Module 5 Lessons 1-6

Afternoon Haigh Community:

I am writing today to provide you with background on how our district is handling the Corona-Virus(Covid 19). Dearborn Public Schools is taking this very seriously and has continued to update their website with information and resources. Below is the link that shows the precautions our school district is taking. I have also attached some resources that can be used at your homes. As more information is shared I will continue to update our blog and send these items home with your students. Thank you for your understanding and support as we work together for our students and staff.

Classroom Updates

Parents,

I have finished testing their reading levels and the reading portion of their NWEA test on the computer. We are spending the remainder of the week finishing the math portion of the test. If you would like to know the results of your child’s winter NWEA test, please send me a dojo message and I can let you know how they did!

Reading groups have been realigned to match your child’s instructional reading level. They are doing a wonderful job with their reading strategies and I am going to attach a list of sight words to this blog post for you to practice at home. In early reading, sight words play a huge role in learning to read fluently. Most sight words must be memorized and do not make sense for the students to try to sound out. The majority of the class is or will be reading well above Kindergarten level by the end of the year so I have included the sight word lists through 2nd grade. When you are reading with your child at home and they get to a word they do not know:

  • look at the beginning/ending sounds
  • look at the pictures
  • stretch out the word or find chunks you know (example: brick they know how to chunk it as br/i/ck)
  • tell your child the sight word and practice it a few times until they memorize

To give you an idea of where your child is: before entering 1st grade all students should know the pre-primer (pre-school) and Kindergarten sight word lists. Students should be reading at a level D or 4 in their book bag.

Here is the link to the sight word lists: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7k1U3cmlTwiN09GYW05WWk2cE5NclBsQ2toeXpLU1BZVWQ4

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year!

We hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break! We are jumping right back into the swing of things and beginning our spelling tests this week. Each Monday you will get a spelling list sent home with your child’s weekly homework page. The spelling tests will be given every Friday. I will also post the words to the blog or dojo in case the list goes missing.

A permission slip form will be coming home today with a quick turn around time. We are headed to see the Click Clack Moo play at the end of the month but must purchase the tickets in advanced. Due to the limited seats left for the show, we are taking the classroom teacher, para, and 2 parent chaperones with us on this trip to help monitor students getting on and off the bus and using the restroom during the show. If you are interested in helping, please send me a DOJO message by the end of the day (1/6/2019) so I can put your name in a lottery and let the selected parents know. Parent volunteers must already have a background check completed on file and will also need to pay for the bus & play. If you are submitting your name to volunteer please know that younger siblings are not able to attend with us, and chaperones do need to ride the bus with the staff & students to help keep the class safe. I do not love the idea of limiting chaperones but it is necessary for this field trip and there is not much happening- we are going to have other classroom celebrations and field trips that parents will be able to attend :)! The field trip is AM only, we will be watching the show and heading directly back to school for lunch!

We will be spending the first few weeks in January testings students on their reading level, rhyming, letter sounds, and sight word abilities along with the Winter NWEA test. As soon as we have finished the testing we will realign our reading groups and books will begin coming home again 🙂 In the meantime, please continue to utilize our online resources (reading eggs & Raz-kids).

Below are the spelling words for this week (at-family):

  • cat
  • bat
  • hat
  • sat
  • rat
  • mat
  • I
  • am
  • the

Have a wonderful week!

Winter Wear

Coats & boots- As the winter season approaches, more layers are necessary to stay warm!  Students will be going outside for recess unless the temperatures are extreme. Please be sure to send hats, gloves, and boots. Students cannot go into the snow unless they have winter boots to change into for recess time. If your child comes to school with winter boots on, please pack them an extra pair of school shoes to wear in the classroom! We are trying to prevent snow, water and mud from coming into the classroom and making a messy and dangerous situation. Students spend majority of their time working on our new carpet and we do not want them sitting and laying in a wet mess from snow boots. Please make sure your child knows how to take off their boots and put their shoes on independently- I am not able to help every student get dressed for recess and monitor the students in the classroom. Unfortunately, I do not have the manpower to help all 24 students get dressed multiple times a day. Thank you for your support and understanding in growing independent children!

PTA

The PTA has come up with a fun way to collect loose change at school! The intent for the challenge is to raise money to go back to each grade level.  In order to include the specials teachers, we will take a small amount from each grade level and divide that between the specials teachers.  The money raised may be used for whatever the teachers feel they need for their classrooms.
The contest will continue until the bottles are filled, but the first grade level to fill all of their bottles wins an Ice Cream Social.

Class News! Week of 11/4

  • Book bags came home today for the first time! Please practice the books & sight words in their bag each night. A letter with more information came home today in their folder.
  • There is no school tomorrow for Election Day!
  • Friday will be our glow party, we will send an invitation home to remind students to dress in white or our orange classroom shirts to GLOW!
  • Conferences are this week on Thursday and next week Tuesday, a note came home last week with your time. If you do not remember your conference time, please send me a dojo message and I can let you know.

Curriculum updates

Parents,

We have successfully completed our first week of curriculum and they are doing fantastic! Below are a couple updates and reminders for you.

  • Math homework books can stay at home 🙂 Please continue to complete one page per day.
  • We are learning two letters and sounds per week. We began with the first and last letter last week and continue with that pattern.
  • All students are assessed on Friday to make sure they have learned the letters & sounds of the week. If they did not, I will contact you to continue working with them at home. Kindergarten curriculum is quick and rigorous.
  • This week we are learning the letters B & Y. By Friday your child should recognize the letters A, B, Y, and Z and also be able to tell us the sounds those letters make.
  • Students were introduced to reading eggs today. The login information will come home with them today. I recommend 15-20 minutes of reading eggs each night (great while you are making dinner!). Reading eggs with really support those foundational skills of letters and sounds the students must master before 1st grade.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Reading Response Homework

Parents,

I just wanted to send out a reminder as I prepare to head out on maternity leave about reading response journals. Mrs. Smith will be seeing your child for their reading group twice per week (either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday). They will have a reading response assignment each time they meet and it is due the next time they meet (2 days later). As we have been co-teaching over the past two weeks, have noticed that some students have not been completing their reading response assignments. Reading response is a HUGE component of reading and a major skill on the NWEA test. I am hoping to get your support at home in reminding the students that they need to be completing these assignments while I am out.

See everyone in June 🙂
