Parents,
I have finished testing their reading levels and the reading portion of their NWEA test on the computer. We are spending the remainder of the week finishing the math portion of the test. If you would like to know the results of your child’s winter NWEA test, please send me a dojo message and I can let you know how they did!
Reading groups have been realigned to match your child’s instructional reading level. They are doing a wonderful job with their reading strategies and I am going to attach a list of sight words to this blog post for you to practice at home. In early reading, sight words play a huge role in learning to read fluently. Most sight words must be memorized and do not make sense for the students to try to sound out. The majority of the class is or will be reading well above Kindergarten level by the end of the year so I have included the sight word lists through 2nd grade. When you are reading with your child at home and they get to a word they do not know:
- look at the beginning/ending sounds
- look at the pictures
- stretch out the word or find chunks you know (example: brick they know how to chunk it as br/i/ck)
- tell your child the sight word and practice it a few times until they memorize
To give you an idea of where your child is: before entering 1st grade all students should know the pre-primer (pre-school) and Kindergarten sight word lists. Students should be reading at a level D or 4 in their book bag.
