Miller has partnered up with HYPE Athletics in an attempt to feed 1000 needy local families during Thanksgiving in “Can The Principal”. I’m asking for your support with promoting this worthy cause, the top two classrooms bringing in the most cans will be treated to a pizza party. Can The Principal will begin next Monday October 10th and last through October 31st, a goal of 5000 canned food items has been set. Hope we may reach our goal or have fun trying.

New Units
Over the next few weeks we will be covering many topics in detail. Below is a description of each content area and what will be taught in class.
If you have any questions please feel free to call me at 313.827.6850 or at my email at bridger@dearbornschools.org
Reading:
During this three week unit, students will learn that myths are anonymously written folk literature originating during man’s early history. They will learn that a myth describes facts to explain religious beliefs, cultural belief, or some mystery of nature. Myths are a sub-genre of folktale and present characters with extraordinary powers. Students will also learn that characters may be gods, goddesses, or humans who act in recognizable human ways through familiar motives.
Math:
In this unit, children will work on addition and subtractions of whole numbers, with special emphasis on the basic facts and their extensions; solutions strategies for addition and subtraction number stories; and addition and subtraction computation with multi-digit numbers.
Writing:
During this three week unit, the teacher will continue to explicitly teach and establish the routines of the Writer’s Workshop (mini-lesson, guided practice, independent practice and sharing). Procedural elements of the Writer’s Workshop will also continue to be reinforced (rules, gathering spot expectations, formatting the paper, organization of materials, procedures, etc.).
Students will follow the steps of the writing process to produce and revise a narrative piece. Students will learn how to select a topic with a narrow focus and plan using a graphic organizer. Students will learn how to organize an event sequence that gives enough detail while moving the reader through the piece. Students will be introduced to establishing a narrator and using adjectives to convey thoughts and feelings of the characters. Various closure techniques will be introduced and attempted.
Social Studies:
We are continuing with the geography of Michigan through the end of October.
Science:
