Reading:
During this three week unit, students will learn that legends are a subgenre of folktales. Legends provide a historical story (before recorded history) about a hero, (protagonist), people, or a natural phenomenon. Students will learn that legends are perceived to be true by the teller and listener, it centers around the lives and deeds of famous individuals, embellishing traits of strength and bravery. Students will learn that these features make a story a legend.
Math Unit 3: In this unit, children will be measuring lengths using customary and metric units linear measures and developing the concept of area through many concrete and visual representations.e:
Science: Students will develop an understanding that there are many forms of energy (such as heat, light, sound, and electrical) and that energy is transferable by convection, conduction, or radiation. Understand energy can be in motion, called kinetic; or it can be stored, called potential. They will also develop an understanding that as temperature increases, more energy is added to a system. Understand nuclear reactions in the sun produce light and heat for the Earth. Students will also be able to identify different forms of Energy- Heat, electricity, light, and sound are forms of energy.
Social Studies: Students will Identify questions historians ask in examining the past in Michigan (What happened? When did it happen? Who was involved? How and why did it happen?).
They will also be able to explain how historians use primary and secondary sources to answer questions about the past.
Writing: During this three week unit, the students will plan and write opinion essays on various topics. Note-taking will be a focus during this unit. The students will use various texts/articles to gather information that will help them support their opinion. They will use academic language that will link/guide the reader through their piece. Topic selection could include information from Science, Social Studies or Literature. If time permits, students may take a piece to publication.
