Book Fair December 5-9

Book Fair -December 5th -9th

BOOK FAIR Dec. 5 – Dec. 9 Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that provides the books kids want to read. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits. Please encourage your child to browse the selection for the best book for him or her.

Picture Retake Day and New Students Pictures

If students are getting their pictures retaken, please have them return their original package to provide to the photographer. If this is your student’s first picture, they will have their picture taken regardless if they order or not; however if they would like to order, please have them fill out the order form and return it to school with exact change. Order forms are available in the office.

School News-Technology Classes for Parents and PTA Book Fair

*Parent Technology Classes offered for Miller parents on Monday, December 5, 2016 from 2:00-3:35 pm.

The classes on 12-5-2016 will cover basic computer skills and the internet.
The goal will be to learn the basic components of a computer, accessing and navigating the internet, accessing Dearborn and Miller school websites and online resources, setting up an email and signing up for the school blogs and where to find additional resources for help.
It will be held in the multipurpose room.
We hope to see many parents at this meeting! Other classes will be offered in
Other sessions will be on January 16, 2017 @ 2:00pm, with the topic being
Internet Safety for Parents: Keeping your kids protected online.
The third session will be on March 6, 2017 @ 2:00pm, and the topic will be on
online help for preparing your kids for the M-Step & NWEA Tests.

Pizza Sale

Pizza Sale on Monday After School, slices ($1 and whole Pizzas $8 available).

There will be a weekly pizza sale and school store being sponsored by the PTA which will be held every Monday in the Cafeteria.

Week Ahead Information

We have a busy week ahead of us!

Next week November 21st at 2:30pm will be our first Third Grade Parent Meeting:

Reminder: Parent-Teacher conferences will resume this week Wednesday and Thursday. Please check with your child, as you should have received a conference note reminder. Our learning goals for this week:

Math: We will continue with last week’s unit where children will be measuring lengths using customary and metric units linear measures and developing the concept of area through many concrete and visual representations, with an emphasis on area.

Reading: Continue with last week’s unit regarding reading fiction texts, such as Legends with an emphasis on
Unit Content Targets:
Knowledge of legends, including setting, characters, and events
Distinguish a legend from a myth
Explain the theme of various legends
Compare and contrast various examples of legends
Justify key elements of a legend and give reasons why
Science: This week’s focus will be on light and how light travels:

Focus Questions:

How does light travel?
How do we see objects that do not make light?
Writing: As with every unit, building our understanding of the writing process is highlighted this week, by using prewriting and drafting this week to state our opinions and formulate supportive reasons and examples.

Social Studies: Continue our focus on Michigan History, starting with the our first native Americans the Hopewell Indians and continuing on with the 3 Fires.

Essential Questions:
How did the actions, ideas and cultural beliefs of people who settled Michigan influence its history?
How do historians use primary and secondary sources to learn about the past?
What can we learn about American Indian beliefs through their traditional stories?
What kinds of questions do historians ask?

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences

Attention all parents: Parent conferences are on the evenings of November 10, 16, 17. Make sure you have an appointment with your child’s teacher. Please be prompt as all conferences are limited to 15 minutes. This is a mandatory meeting and your attendance is required.
