1. stock market: Where stocks and bonds are traded

2. economy: the way money is made and spent

3. unemployed: no job or money

4. layoffs: letting workers go because the company cannot afford them

5. savings: money that you save over time

6. depression:a period during which business, employment, and stock-market values decline severely or remain at a very low level of activity

7. federal government: combination of state and national governments

8. charity: a group that helps those in need

9. loan payments: paying back money that you owe a little at a time

10. overproduction: Producing too many goods that you can’t sell

11. credit: buying something and paying for it later

U.S. History Semester 2! Here we go!

We will be finishing Chapter 24, so that’s why we are starting at #38.

38. boll weevil: an insect that destroys crops سوسة

39. deny: refuse رفض

40. suspicious: not trusting مشكوك فيه

41. foreigners: people from a place other than America أجانب

42. Ku Klux Klan: a racist group of Whites who feared African Americans, Jews, Catholics and immigrants

43. Catholics & Protestants: two different groups of Christianity

44. democracy: a type of government where citizens choose the president

45. Communism: a type of country where the government owns all the land and there are less freedoms for people

46. Crime: breaking laws جريمة

47. violence: killing and hurting people عنف

48. Reformers: people who want to improve society الإصلاحيون

49. independent: depending only on yourself

50. discrimination: treating people bad because of their race or religion

51. 18th amendment (Prohibition): made the selling of alcohol illegal in the United States

52. ban: to prohibit (to make something illegal)

53. bootlegger: a person who made and sold alcohol illegally

54. speakeasy: an illegal place where alcohol was sold

55. 21st amendment: canceled the 18th amendment
