Home Folders
Your student will bring home a Home Folder each night. The folder is organized in sections for you and your student to easily access materials. Please look through the Home Folder each night for important information and homework. THE HOME FOLDER MUST COME BACK TO SCHOOL EACH DAY.
Homework
Students will have math and/or ELA reading assignments during the school week to be completed in homework notebook. Nightly reading is to be a homework focus (see below). Homework begins week of September 4th.
Spelling
Students will have weekly spelling tests. Words will go home at the start of the school week and are expected to be practiced daily at home in their homework notebooks. Students will also be practicing daily in the classroom. Spelling begins week of September 4th.
Nightly Reading
Students should be reading every night at home for approximately 20-40 minutes. They may read books of their choice, but please make sure that the books are “just right books” for them. Reading is crucial in developing the mind.
Classroom Behavior System
Our classroom will focus on positive behavior. River Oaks uses the PBIS behavior system that also focuses on positive behavior. We will have a clip chart for individual behavior. These charts will allow the students to earn rewards for their superior actions.
Healthy Snacks and Water Bottles
Each day your student will be allowed to have a healthy, afternoon snack. Please send in snacks that are easy to eat, such as fruit, veggies, crackers, pretzels, etc. Your child may have a water bottle (no juice) in the classroom with them throughout the day. Please make sure that the water bottle and snack are labeled with their name.
Toys
Many of the students like to bring toys to play with at recess. Please keep all toys at home! Often toys are misplaced or damaged at school and it is the child who brings in the toy who is responsible. Also, if toys are found in the classroom, they will be placed in the June Box. The June Box is a box that will hold any toys from home that are a distraction and will be kept there until the month of June when school breaks for summer. Parents may schedule a meeting to discuss the matter and take the toy home upon meeting with the teacher if need be.
Field Trips
If you are interested in attending any school field trips please make sure to sign up in the office and follow school procedures. You must fill out a volunteer form in the office before coming into the classroom. It takes about one week to process. We will have forms available during open house. Please make sure to bring legal photo identification.
Classroom Blog
I have created a classroom blog where you can find classroom updates. Some items to be included: recent student work, spelling words, upcoming testing, reminders etc. Please feel free to subscribe to receive classroom updates.
