Welcome 2018-2019 Kindergarten Families!
Dear families,
Welcome! My name is Ms. Abulhassan and I look forward to having a very successful school year with your children. Since we are just getting started with the school year, I thought you might like to know a little about me. I have been teaching for 7 years now. I taught both kindergarten and first grade. Teaching is a huge part of my life, and I truly enjoy having a job that is incredibly rewarding. I have always had a passion for helping young minds grow and instilling a love for learning early on.
On my free time, I enjoy traveling to new places and meeting all kinds of wonderful people. I also enjoy spending time with my family. I come from a very close-knit family, and I grew up with so much love and support from them. I am forever grateful. In addition to traveling and spending time with my family, I love reading inspirational books because they help me maintain a positive outlook on life. Hopefully, my love of reading nurtures a love of reading in your children.
Kindergarten is definitely a year of tremendous growth and learning as your child gains independence in everyday learning tasks. I will do my best to ensure that your child is provided with a supportive and engaging environment that challenges and inspires him/her to become an active participant in the learning process. In addition, I will make every effort to create an educational partnership with you. You are the most important person in your child’s life, and I strongly believe that your support will help your child reach his/her full potential. Together, we can help your child build a strong foundation for a lifetime of learning.
Here is some information pertaining to classroom procedures and policies:
Absences – Please make sure your child is in school every day unless he/she is sick. If your child is sick, it is necessary to call the office and inform them that he/she will be absent. The number is 313-827-6750. Please send a note or call if your child will need to be dismissed early for appointments. Kindergarten is a continuous experience with each lesson building on the lessons the day before. Attendance and punctuality are keys to success. School starts at 8:35 and ends at 3:35 every day. You must pick your child up promptly because children tend to get emotional when they do not see you after school.
Communication Folders – Your child has been provided with a Communication Folder. It is your child’s responsibility to bring this to class daily. In the folder you will find homework, teacher notes, any unfinished classwork and handouts.
Supplies– I recommend that your child has a backpack to carry things from school and a lunch box if he/she is packing a lunch. Other school supplies will be provided by the school. However, any donations are greatly appreciated. Supplies needed:
- Gallon Size Ziplock bags
- Sandwich Size Ziplock Bags
- Brown/White paper bags
- Kleenex
- Hand Sanitizer
- One container of Clorox Wipes
- One pack of white copy paper
- Multi-colored and white card stock
- 24 Crayola pack of Crayons
- Pack of pencils (Ticonderoga)
- Glue Sticks
- EXPO Dry Erase Markers
Classroom Policies and Rules- We here at River Oaks have a color-coded behavior system. Each day, every child starts at green. If they demonstrate great behavior and follow classroom rules, they move their clip up on the color-coded chart. If a rule is broken, two verbal warnings will be given. After the two warnings, their clip will be moved down on the chart. Repeated rule breaking will result in loss of a privilege and phone call home. The following is a list of rules I create with the kids on the first day:
- I will follow directions.
- I will respect myself, respect others, and respect my school.
- I will listen with the teacher is talking.
- I will use nice hands and feet.
- I will always try my best.
Lunch- Students may either get lunch from school or bring their lunch from home. A lunch calendar with menu choices will be sent home monthly. If your child decides to pack a lunch from home, please label his/her lunch bag with their name.
Snack– Every month, a snack calendar will go home informing you of when your child is to bring snack for our class. Please send enough snacks for the whole class.
An important goal in my classroom is to reinforce healthy eating habits. With this goal in mind, the following is a list of acceptable snacks:
• Crackers
• Pretzels
• Fruit and/or vegetables
• Yogurt or pudding
• Granola bars
• Fruit snacks
• Rice Cakes
• Applesauce
• 100 calorie packs
• String cheese
• Mini-muffins
Students may bring milk, water, or juice with their provided snack for the class. If a drink is provided, boxed or bottled drinks are recommended.
Birthdays– You are welcome to bring in a treat to celebrate your child’s birthday. Please provide the necessary paper products as well. PLEASE do not bring sheet cakes. Cupcakes are much easier to work with. Healthy snacks are always recommended and suggested.
Special Classes- Students will participate in gym, music, art, and enrichment (technology). A schedule of these classes will be sent home. Please remember to have your child wear gym shoes on days he/she has gym.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE ROBOTICS TEAM
Dear Parents/Families,
Geer Park is embarking on our second year with robotics to further our STEAM initiative (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). We are looking to continue our First Lego League (FLL) team and FLL Junior team. We are recruiting 18-20 students in grades 1-5 to join our teams. If you are interested in robotics, designing and programming a robot, then think about applying to be on the team. If you think you are interested, write a short essay explaining why you believe you should be selected.
We will be meeting once a week on Wednesday mornings from 7:45-8:30 and possibly Tuesday afternoons from 3:35-4:30.
You will be selected on the following criteria:
-
Strong, edited, neatly written essay. Include at least 3 reasons why you would be a great candidate for robotics. It may be typed or handwritten.
-
Good attendance
-
Behavior
-
Teacher recommendation
-
Parents and students must commit to dropping off and picking up their children on time and committing to at least one Saturday competition in December (date to be determined).
If you were in robotics this year, you still must apply again if you wish to be chosen for next year’s team.
Write your short essay and turn in to Ms. Shalhout or Ms. Donoghue by Friday, June 8.
