Winter break is here!!!

Greetings, Salina families!
Below, are the directions and a rubric for the diorama project that I would like my students to complete over the break. It’s really cool because, essentially, they will be bringing their own imaginations to life! I hope you all have a wonderful break!

Diorama Book Report Project

Due: January 9, 2018

DIRECTIONS:

Part 1 – Diorama Book Report Scene: (20pts)

  • Get a shoe box that is approximately 12x6x4 (does not have to be exact size)
  • Line the inside of your box with construction paper, decorative paper, or paint
  • Add details to the walls of the box using paper, paint, or anything creative
  • Create your favorite scene from the book by using any type of materials: paper, clay, play-doh, foil, twigs, pebbles, Legos, dolls, and other objects
  • Put the title and the author where it is visible on the top of the box
  • Be creative and have fun!

Part 2 – Written Report:

Your written report should be three paragraphs long.  It can be hand written or typed on the computer and will be displayed next to your diorama.

Paragraph 1 – Brief Summary of the Book: (10 pts)

This paragraph should have a general topic sentence about the overall idea of the book.  This summary paragraph should include the basic setting, main character or characters, problem, main events from beginning, middle, and end of story, and the solution to the problem.  It should be written in a way that is interesting to the reader while giving the reader a brief understanding of what the book is about. (5 – 8 sentences)

Paragraph 2 – Favorite Scene: (10 pts)

Paragraph two should be about your favorite scene in the book.  The scene you describe should be the same scene you decorated in your box.  This paragraph should include a topic sentence about the scene, significant details about what happened in the scene, and a concluding sentence about why you chose this as your favorite scene. (5 – 8 sentences)

Paragraph 3 – Concluding Paragraph:(10 pts)

Paragraph three should include a topic sentence stating the theme or author’s message.  The body of your paragraph should include whether or not you liked the book and reasons and evidence to support your opinion.  Conclude with a final reflection. (Example: After reading the book, I felt…, I wished …, I realized …, I understood …) (5 – 8 sentences)

 

Grading:  You will be graded in the following matter:

Diorama: 20 points

  • Artwork: Interior scene contains BOTH background scene and 3D objects (10 points)
  • Effort: Work demonstrates the student’s best effort, time taken, and creativity (5 points)
  • Top: Displays Title of book and author (5 points)

Paragraph 1: 10 points

  • Grammar: Complete sentences with proper capitalization, punctuation, and word use (5 points)

Paragraph 2: 10 points

  • Grammar: Complete sentences with proper capitalization, punctuation, and word use (5 points)

Paragraph 3: 10 points

  • Includes a topic sentence stating the theme or author’s message, whether or not you liked the book and reasons and evidence to support your opinion, and a final reflection. (5 points)
  • Grammar: Complete sentences with proper capitalization, punctuation, and word use (5 points)
