A lot of choices. Some are easier than others, maybe start with the easiest and work your way through. We all love Pete the Cat so that would be fun to try- dress him in your own way and write a short story about it!

Please help out the younger students in the house with the drawings- get them started and let them finish.

As always, do your schoolwork, get outside for some fresh air, help around the house and Be Kind!!!

Free Food from EverFresh Market

March 30, 2020 by Sandra Merrow

EverFresh Market is giving away free meat and chicken to any families that are in need. The market is located right down the street from River Oaks Elementary. Anyone can walk into the store and take anything that they may need from the meat section that’s marked with a plain white sticker. They can then take the items to the register and have them bagged. The address is 20125 Ann Arbor Trail, Dearborn Heights.

Monday, March 30! Hello, Everyone!!!

Monday, March 30! Hello, Everyone!!!

How about a fun drawing that can be done by the young ones as well as our upper elementary students? If you have a younger sibling, maybe you could help them out by tracing their hands and feet for them! Your character can be YOU, a family member, or anyone! Depending on how you trace the hands and feet you could make animals, aliens, superheroes, monsters or just about anything you like! Add detail and then add color. This is a great concept: foreshortening. Think of looking at someone laying down and you are at their feet looking toward their face, or from the front of a car over the hood and toward the back. It is kind of hard to do and that is why it looks so cool! If don’t like your first one, try it again. Practice is what make everything easier!

Ideas
"Falling Through Space"- lesson in foreshortening. Have students trace hands and feet then draw body with pastel. Watercolor background, and ta-da! 5/6th grade
Some examples…….

As always- make sure you are doing your schoolwork, get outside for fresh air- bike ride?, walk?, help out around the house and Be Kind!

Food Distribution Change

March 27, 2020 by Joseph Martin

Food schedule change On Monday, March 30, Dearborn Public Schools is changing the format of its free student meal distributions.

Meals will now be distributed three times a week, instead of five.

Meals will generally be distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. However, the week of April 6 to 10, meals will be handed out on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.  Friday, April 10, is Good Friday and a holiday for District staff.

Fewer meal distributions should make it easier for families to get the food while reducing the risk of virus exposure for both our families and our staff. Each food bag will still contain both breakfast, lunch and milk for a child under 18, but now the bag will have food for each day until the next distribution.

The grab-and-go meals will continue to be handed out between 10 a.m. and noon at the same seven schools.  The Dearborn Schools student does not have to attend that school to be eligible for a meal. A designated person can pick up meals for multiple children.  The student does not need to be present.

The distribution sites are Fordson, Dearborn and Edsel Ford high schools; McCollough/Unis; Salina Intermediate; Smith Middle School; and Woodworth Middle School.

The program is allowing the District’s 20,700 students to continue to have access to healthy food. The meals are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch Program. Dearborn Public Schools already used the federal program to offer all kindergarten to 12th grade students free lunch and breakfast on school days.

Meal distributions will continue through the state-ordered school closure.  Currently, schools are set to reopen on April 14.

Check firstbell.dearbornschools.org for the latest information on the school closure and the food program.

Playgrounds Closed

March 27, 2020 by Joseph Martin

Good Morning,

The weekend is here and although the weather forecast is calling for rain, we all like to get outside and get some fresh air. This is especially true during this time of year when the temperatures are on the rise and we all have been spending a lot of time inside.

Many are thinking that it might be alright to get outside and have children play with one or two friends. Unfortunately, this is not something we should be doing at this time. The battle to stop the spread of the COVID 19 virus is on-going and gathering in small groups, even outside at the local park is not something we should be doing.

During the State of Michigan mandated shut down, all Dearborn Public School facilities, including playgrounds, and athletic fields, will be closed to the public. Please do not attempt to go onto the fields or access the playgrounds.  If you are found on the property you will be asked to leave.

The Governor has ordered that we all shelter in place.  This is not a recommendation or suggestion. This action is being taken to help in the effort to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus and to mitigate the number of people becoming sick. Hospitals in southeastern Michigan are being overwhelmed and are reaching the point where they are unable to meet the needs of those arriving for care. We must all do our part to help slow the spread of this virus and remain at home!

The Governor did say that it is ok to go for a walk, run, or bike ride. However, we can not gather in groups at local parks or playgrounds.

We look forward to the day, hopefully in the not too distant future, when our facilities will once again be open to the public and we can all return to our regular routines. The District appreciates all of the support that the Dearborn community has shown and the tremendous amount of community spirit that has been demonstrated during this very difficult time.  Together we will get through this, one community, #DearbornStrong!

Happy Friday, Everyone!

Happy Friday, Everyone!

We are wrapping up a week of paper folding and creating. Today I have some paper fish- there are two. The first one will be easier for younger students, but fun for everyone. Don’t worry about having the right size paper- almost any will work. You can decorate with crayons or markers or whatever you have available! If you stay with her after the fish she will show you some other folding ideas- butterfly, etc…..

You will need 6 strips of paper, 3 each of two different colors. You are going to weave with the strips so you want them to be thin to learn how to do it. When you figure it out, you can make the strips thicker and make fish of all sizes ! The video is quick, but you can watch it over and over and make some really cool fish!

Have fun, check back- I will add something to do over the weekend in case you are looking for a creative outlet!

In the mean time- do your schoolwork, get outside for some fresh air, help around the house and Be Kind!

March 26: Good Morning Everyone!!!

March 26: Good Morning Everyone!!!

I hope you had fun folding some origami yesterday. Today I am adding one of my favorite folding/drawing ideas- a dragon eye, could be a snake eye, person’s eye, animal….. It is a bit tricky BUT if you hang in there you will figure it out. Remember, if you get stuck- unfold and back up a step. Have fun designing the eye that goes in to the eye socket you fold. Hope you post some for me to see!

Origami Eye - loved it, the boys thought it was great and made dragon eyes. Link to video was very helpful
