Piet Mondrian : Piet Mondrian is a Dutch artist best known for his abstract paintings. Art that is abstract does not show things that are recognizable such as people, objects or landscapes. Instead artists use colors, shapes and textures to achieve their effect. He chose to work with the primary colors- red, blue and yellow AND black and grey only!

Watch the video, it shows how his style developed over the years of his career.
Start off by drawing a simplified outline of an animal of your choice. Do not include any details within the body other than a simple eye. Then, using a ruler, draw horizontal and vertical parallel lines within the animal body. Remember- parallel lines are ones that are the same distance from each other- they don’t cross! You will use vertical AND horizontal lines which will cross.

After you have drawn the animal with the horizontal and vertical lines, it is time to add color! ONLY black, red, blue, yellow and gray AND the white from the paper. You do not need to fill in every shape that you made- this adds to the abstract nature of the color!

Your turn! Please send me a photo of your Mondrian Art! Make sure you include your first and last name and the name of your teacher!!! zecharj@dearbornschools.org
