This afternoon, Mrs. DeNeen surprised us by stopping in and reading a great St. Patrick’s Day book and taught us all about Ireland.  Thank you Mrs. DeNeen!

Hello Families,

Today we had a special drawing for the students in our class who wore words on their shirts.  We put those names in a can and selected the names of three students.  Congratulations to Reina, Husam and Ayah! These students won a free kid’s meal at Benihana.  Congratulations!

Hello Families,

Since you couldn’t come to the Science Fair Boot Camp tonight, I thought I would bring what I could to you. Picture this:  an excited classroom with 20 of the most amazing science display boards designed by our very own kindergarten scientists!  Yesterday, our scientists stood if front of the display boards dressed in their labcoat and talked about the results of their alligator experiments to third graders.  They were amazing!  Take a look:

Hello Families,

March is Reading Month is in full swing.  We would love for you to come and read to our class.  Let me know what day and time works best with your schedule.  Usually we have parent readers at arrival and dismissal times, but in kindergarten, being flexible is the name of the game.  So send me a email or note and we will work something out. Don’t forget to bring in a favorite book or two!  Plan on spending 10-15 minutes.  Thanks!

Thanks to Leo's mom for reading to our class!

Thanks to Leo’s mom for reading to our class!

Letter of the Week:  U  u   -good luck!  Letter books were sent home today!

Words of the Week:  “ag” family       bag    tag    wag   rag

Individual Spelling Words:  Each kindergartner has two spelling words that are chosen just for them.  Students are given an opportunity to practice these words during  arrival time and at “Word Work” time.  These spelling words  are written in their Spelling Notebook along with this week’s words.  Please make sure to have your child practice these words at home. It only takes several minutes each day but can make a big difference!

Tuesday:  Your child’s science display boards are due!  We can’t wait to see them!  If your child hasn’t returned their library book, please do so today.  A Science Fair Boot Camp parent note will be coming home today.  Make sure to check out the menu of the 20 hands-on science stations on the back of the letter.  Given the one-hour time frame, this will allow your family to plan ahead and make sure to visit the stations that best suits everyone’s interests!

Wednesday:  Late Start!  School starts one hour later.  Also, please join us for Lindbergh’s Science Fair Boot Camp at 6:30 p.m.  The class and I are very excited about this event.  We hope you and your family can make it!

Friday:  Wear a shirt with words today!  Please return letter books.

Have a great week!

Ms. Wright

We had 19 students bring back their Nightly Reading Homework!  Not only are you making reading a daily habit in your home, but teaching your child about responsibility too!  The Pizza Hut Book-It coupons will go home tonight!

It is so exciting to hear the students talk about the results of their alligators each morning!  Below are some pictures of the science display board we have been doing together at school.  We just do one heading each day.  Take a look.

Week of March 3, 2014

Hip Hip Hooray,  It ‘s the 100th Day!

It was a big day in kindergarten!  It went so fast that we barely had time to get ready for dismissal.

Today we had a 100 piece snack!

100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 006

100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 005 100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 004 100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 003 100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 002 100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 001

With the help of Logan’s mom, Andrew’s mom, and Leo’s mom we made the coolest crowns around!  Check out our class picture!  I think we used 100 staples in each crown!  🙂

100TH dAY OF SCHOOL 007

Also, during science we asked the question “how much is a 100 drops of water?”  Ask your child for the results!

Here is what you need to know for this week:

  • Letter of the Week:  Q  q-   good luck!
  • Spelling Pattern:    ad        such as  had,  fad,  sad,  dad    ( if you have a good example of a fad, please email me-  when the students asked me what a fad was, every explanation I had- they just didn’t get!  🙂
  • Spelling:  since the spelling tests are going so well, I will be adding some sight words that are individual to your child.  We will start this tomorrow and write the words in their spelling notebook.  They will be tested on Friday. I am not sure how this is going to work, but we will give it a try.  🙂
  • Check out the March is Reading Month calendar for a variety of reading activities.  Today we had a Mystery Reader.  The students listened to the Mystery Reader on the speaker system and had to guess who was reading the story.  This week it was Ms. Donna from the cafeteria!
  • Parent Readers- we love to listen to stories in our classroom, especially from family members!  During the month of March, contact me if you are interested in reading to our class.  You would bring your own favorite books from home, usually a couple that would last a total of 10-15 minutes.  In the past, readers came at arrival time (8:45 a.m.) and  right before dismissal time (3:15 p.m.) .  Leave a comment below, email me or put a note in your child’s folder to read our our class.
  • Science Fair Boot Camp- it sounds like most of our scientists have started their experiments and are very excited to share what is happening to the alligators!  In class, we have completed the seven days of observing and measuring.  Today we started the Science Display Board.  I will put a picture on the blog tomorrow so you can see.

Here are some tips that the Upper El students received that I thought might be helpful:

  •         Don’t glue until you have arranged everything.    * I learned this lesson today!!!
  •         Never write directly on the board.
  •          Glitter glue should not be used.
  •          Use colored border behind information.  ( I have construction paper if you need it)
  •          Cut straight!!!   Glue on straight!!!   ( As straight as a kindergartner can!)

Most of all, this should be fun and not stressful for anyone!  If you have questions, let me know.  No worries allowed!

Hopefully this is all for now!

Ms. Wright

February 28, 2014

Dear Families,

I can’t believe that tomorrow is March already.  Where did the time go?    Just a couple of quick reminders:

  • Monday is the 100th Day of School!  We will be busy making the coolest 100th Day of School crowns at 1:00 p.m.  We could use extra hands for this activity.  If you are interested, let me know and we will put you to work!  🙂  100th Day posters are due!  This is a fun, counting activity, no stress allowed!  🙂
  • Please return the Nightly Reading Homework on Monday!  Encourage your child to wear their reading charm necklace.  I also have a 100th day of school charm for it!
  • Thanks to your generosity!  Every student in our class donated to Lindbergh’s Science Fair Boot Camp! Please mark Wednesday, March 12th on your calendar for this special event.  It will start at 6:30 p.m.
  • I will be taking Al the Alligator home over the weekend to make the measurements for our experiment.  Just a note, Al has grown off the graph paper, so we had to cut the paper in half  and tape the halves together to make a longer graph.  The class watched me do this, so they should know what to do.  Also, the tails of the alligators curl up.  We straightened the alligator out, but did not to stretch him.  Hope that makes sense.  If you haven’t started your experiment, please do so this weekend.  Every morning, there is much excitement about the growth of these alligators!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Ms. Wright
