Essay Tips and Tricks

by Bryan Anthony – Thursday, May 14, 2020, 11:36 AMNumber of replies: 0

As all of you begin to write your essay in small sections that will eventually culminate into a complete essay.

I want to start of by saying please follow the schedule I laid out in my previous post. I do not want you to feel compelled to finish the entire essay in one day. I do not suggest you procrastinate and then end up having to scramble to write the essay in a short amount of time. I have said that to all of you before but it is worth saying it again.

Sometimes the hardest part of writing an essay is simply getting started. Focusing on creating a solid introduction is an important first step. But sometimes you may need a little help or tricks to get that process started. I attached a hyperlink with a video about how to begin and ultimately complete the writing process on an essay. Please take the time and watch this video.

Essay Directions, Schedule, and CER Rubric

Essential Question for Essay

Should Schools Be Allowed to Limit Students’ Online Speech?

Directions: You will write a 5 paragraph using the Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) format to answer the ESSENTIAL QUESTION. You must use at least three of the DBQ documents in your essay and the sources you use should be properly listed in your document. You may use additional sources from outside the DBQ documents but they WILL NOT count as part of the three required sources.

Schedule for Essays

May 13-15

You should begin writing your essay.   The goal is to write at least one paragraph a day.

May 18-19

Continue writing your essay. Keep following the one paragraph a day model. By May 19 you should have 5 paragraphs completed.

May 20-21

Peer Review Process! This is where we will use the partners you all picked to peer review each other’s essays. You will swap essays and review them. This is a mandatory part of the assignment so make sure you do it. When peer reviewing each person should pick at least three items of improvement and three items that were done well, we will call these FOCUS AREAS. These focus areas should be explained to the essay writer in the peer review process. You can use the COMMENT feature on GOOGLE DOCS to accomplish this.

The next two days will be dedicated to completing the DBQ activities which for most of you means completing document G. On Wednesday I will post detailed instructions of how to work on the essay. The end of this week and most of next week will be dedicated to working on the essays before we turn them in. I hope you are all doing well and that we get a little better weather this week. Then again we do live in Michigan.

Good Work This Week!

by Bryan Anthony – Friday, May 8, 2020, 7:32 AMNumber of replies: 0

Before we end this week I wanted to tell you all that I am proud of the work you are all doing. Please keep up the effort. Take some time this weekend to relax and enjoy yourself in some way. I know even the weekends can feel strange during the social distancing but nonetheless we must all try to find some happiness where we can.

Happy Thursday everyone! Most of you have been working very hard on the DBQ documents and check in emails for this week. So in short keep up the good work. For our second video clip of the week on our current topic I attached a video of how First Amendment Freedom of Speech guidelines apply in the online world. Please watch it when you get a chance.

A few of you have explained that you are already starting to work ahead and begin crafting you essay. This is excellent news. As Henry Ford said “Nothing is particularly difficult if you divide it into small jobs.” This is the best way to approach writing an essay. Take your time and break the essay into small sections.

Video of the Week 1

by Bryan Anthony – Tuesday, May 5, 2020, 7:02 AMNumber of replies: 0

Attached is a link to the first video learning segment for the week. As we did last week we are still learning about the complexity of the topic of Freedom of Speech. Today’s video focuses on a person’s right to offend. Mainly on whether or not offense can be a good thing as well as potentially bad. Add the knowledge or opinion you get from the video to your weekly DBQ assignments and more importantly in our Freedom of Speech essay.

Thank you to all of you who have been keeping up with your DBQ work and your weekly email requirements. I appreciate your efforts greatly.

There is one thing that may have been lost in the noise  little while back. I requested that student pick a peer review partner. This partner will be used during the essay writing process when we finish up with the DBQ process. All you need to do is pick a peer review partner and then both partners must send me a quick email confirming they are partners. Then later on when we go to use the partner process we can do it without delay because this formality will have been completed.

Thank you again for all your efforts. Keep safe and try to enjoy your weekend.

Keep up the good work this week!

Nothing new today. Keep doing what you’re doing. Do not forget that sometime in the next three days you will need to email me a second time. Ideally work on DOCUMENTS C and D will be done by Friday.
