Green Folders
Your child will bring home a green folder each night. The folder is organized in sections for you and your child to easily access materials. Please look through the green Folder each night for important information and homework.Take out the Keep at home papers daily. GREEN FOLDER MUST COME BACK TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY.
Planner
The planner is filled out first thing in the morning, so it is important that your child is at school on time. The planner will have the weekly spelling list, homework assignments, any upcoming events, and their behavior color.
Homework
Students will bring a packet on Monday that has the math homework for the week. Students will work on math homework daily. Please do not have students go ahead because it matches the lesson taught that day. The packet is due the following Monday. Homework is graded as a participation grade under life skills and not as correct or incorrect. Homework begins week of September 2nd.
Nightly Reading
Students should be reading every night at home for approximately 30-45 minutes. They may read books of their choice, but please make sure that the books are “just right books” for them. Reading is crucial in developing the mind. If your child needs more books, the public library is also a great option. If you need help finding one, please let me know.
Spelling
Students will have weekly spelling tests on Friday. Words will go home at the start of the school week and are expected to be practiced daily at home. Students will also have a choice to practice in the classroom during daily 5. As the weeks go by, the word patterns will get more difficult. Spelling begins week of September 2nd.
Classroom Behavior System
My classroom focus is on positive behavior. River Oaks uses the PBIS behavior system that also focuses on positive behavior. We will use the PBIS clip chart for individual behavior. If your child gets blue, purple or pink, please discuss positive next steps. Everyone has a bad day but let’s not make it a pattern.
Healthy Snacks and Water Bottles
Your child may bring a healthy snack for the afternoon since our lunch is at 11:00 am. Please send in snacks that are easy to eat, such as fruit, veggies, crackers, pretzels, etc. Your child may bring a water bottle in the classroom with them (no juice). Please make sure that the water bottle and snacks are labeled with their name to avoid any confusions. Students are responsible for their snacks. Also, with our busy schedules in 3rd grade, sometimes snack is cancelled.
Toys
Many students like to bring toys to play with at recess. Please keep all toys at home! Often toys are misplaced or damaged at school and it your child’s responsibility. Also, if toys are found in the classroom they will be placed in the June Box. The June Box will hold any toys from home that are a distraction and will be kept there until June before summer break. Parents may schedule a meeting to discuss the matter and take the toy home upon meeting with the teacher.
Field Trips
If you are interested in attending any school field trips please make sure to sign up in the office and follow school procedures. You must fill out a volunteer form in the office before coming into the classroom. It takes about one week to process. We will have forms available during open house or go to the main office. Please make sure to bring legal photo identification. A friendly reminder, if you chaperone, you are helping the teacher by keeping the students safe and organized. If you are not sure of procedures, please do not hesitate to ask.
Classroom Blog/Communication
I have created a classroom blog where you can find weekly classroom updates. Some items to be included: recent student work, spelling words, upcoming testing, reminders etc. Please make sure to subscribe to receive classroom updates. This is a great way to communicate with me. The best way to contact me is via email at wetterk@dearbornschools.org or phone 313-827-6750. This is the school phone and I may not always be available at that moment but I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I Have Returned!
Dear Families,
My name is Mrs. Kellie Wetter and I will be your student’s 3rd grade teacher! I am a graduate from Madonna University with a major in Language Arts and a minor in Elementary Education. I also have a Master’s degree in Media and Technology. I am thrilled to be working with such wonderful students and their families. I look forward to seeing new and familiar faces and seeing the students excel this school year.
My goal for this school year is to make the transition to third grade as smooth as possible. The third grade team is working closely together planning activities to develop creative skills and interests of the students. I hope to make this academic year fun filled and hands-on.
I strongly feel that working together to keep the lines of communication open helps students’ learning, so please feel free to contact me at River Oaks Elementary or by email. I look forward to sharing an exciting and rewarding year with you and your third grader!
