From the desk of the Kindergarten Teachers:

As educators, our hope is to develop joyful, self-directed, engaged learners. Learners who are curious about the world around them, who are excited to take on challenges, who are willing to take risks, and who are resilient and flexible in the face of failure.  Our goal here at Lowrey, is to have learners who have a growth mindset.

The Kindergarten TEAM has found that building a classroom culture of growth mindset changes how students approach their learning, and is transformational in helping them build the habits of mind to be successful within and beyond the classroom. As one of our kindergartners explains, “If you don’t know how to do something, you can try it again and again and fix your mistakes, and if you don’t give up, you really showed growth mindset.”

We start by asking our kindergartners to share how their muscles get stronger.  We give our students the example of working out our muscles through exercise to working out our brains through the effort of purposeful practice (building stamina). By showing brain images of growth, students can discover the way that their brains change as they learn new things.

You can also extend and enrich this understanding of growth mindset by reading aloud literature that celebrates a growth and facilitating discussions about how growth mindset plays out in different contexts. Students may also be inspired to read the biographies of famous athletes or thinkers who overcame huge obstacles and who embody a growth mindset…

Dear Families,

On Monday, March 19th we will be going on a field trip to the Detroit Zoo. We are leaving the school at 9:15 am SHARP and will return back to Lowrey at 2:15 pm. The students will be able to see a variety of zoo animals and their habitats.  Please be on time, buses will leave at 9:15!!!

The cost of the field trip is $8 per child.  Please sign the permission slip and return with money by Friday, March 9th. $8 will cover the admission to the zoo and transportation.

Your child will need a bag lunch with a drink. NO GLASS BOTTLES! So please pack your child a healthy lunch to eat! Students may bring money for the gift shop, but please remember it is their responsibility to keep the money.

We will take the first 5 parents to help out on the trip. Parents will be chaperoning so they are not to bring younger siblings with them.  The bus will be able to seat 5 parents from each Kindergarten class only.  If you want to come along you are more than welcome to follow us in your vehicle.  The cost for parents will also be $8.  In addition to the cost for admission there is an  $8 parking fee if driving separately.

Thank you,

Kindergarten Teachers

Learning How to Tie Shoes

Dear Families:

School is a busy and exciting time for our students.  We learn so many new things every day. As we learn, safety is very important and one of the most important things we need to learn about safety is how to tie our shoes! Please work with your child to teach them how to tie their shoes. This will keep them safe and will also help us stay healthy!  There are many videos online to help teach them also and they can follow along.  Below are a few:

In our classroom we take care of one another so if your child needs help with their shoes, the other students will help them tie their shoes!

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Thank you!

100th Day of School

This Wednesday is our 100th day of school.  Please take an empty, dry plastic bottle (like a water, pop, or Gatorade bottle) and put 100 objects inside.  For example, you could put in 100 M&M’s, Skittles, pom poms, marshmallows, noodles, pennies, small Legos, gummy bears or peanuts.  These are just a few examples, you may use anything you have 100 of and that will fit in the bottle.  Please send in your bottle on Wednesday, Feb. 28th!  I am so excited to see how creative everyone can be!  Thank you!!!

We have 22 students.  Please just have your child sign their name to the card.  Do not write who it is to.  If you would like to send in a bag of candy, please make sure it is individually wrapped, or cupcakes, or juice.  Thank you! Good morning,

PTA will have some fund raisers in the next couple weeks. Please encourage all students to participate so enough funds can be raised for upcoming field trips. There will be many trips coming up in the spring, and PTA needs our help in order for them to assist us for buses.

Please remember fund raisers are no longer for a specific grade level or trip. All funds go to PTA and then are distributed as necessary.

Thursday February 1st – Pizza for snack day.

Friday February 9th– Pajama Day

PTA Valentine’s Day Store will be open on  – Feb 9thFeb 12th, and Feb 14th.
More information will follow for the pizza for snack day 🙂
